I normally begin these posts highlighting upcoming local releases by taking a look back and discussing some of the records that came out the month before. But seeing as we've just crossed over into 2012, I think we should avert our eyes from 2011 and march relentless forward into the new year. And if January's crop of releases is any indication of what to expect, it appears that we're going to be in for an extremely productive and fruitful year in local music. There's a slew of great stuff to wade through here, both from established Atlanta veterans and newcomers [...]

The 7th Annual Blue Moon Midnight Mass ::: photo by Josh Lovseth Jason Josephes (Booker at The Blue Moon, member of the Hopscotch Boys and "Jesus" during the pageant.) took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few of my silly questions about "Blue Moon's 8th Christmas Eve Holiday Pageant and Midnight Mass" by [...]
It wouldn't be Christmas without the State Midnight Mass and, following last year's gig featuring Ham Sandwich, We Cut Corners, James Vincent McMorrow, We Are Losers and Sleep Thieves, we're back at The Mercantile for another night of fine music. So far the bill this year features State favourites little xs for eyes and Come On Live Long , plus top Dublin beat combo The Pacifics but we will be announcing more names in the coming weeks. Entry, as ever is free, but this year we will be raising funds for War Child [...]

[Photos by acidjack] Starting with their band name, Austin's ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead have never been concerned with doing things the way that other bands do them. They are the kind of band that opens a co-headlining (yet nonetheless, technically opening) set at the Bowery Ballroom on a Friday night with a fifteen minute song ("Strange News From Another Planet") from a new record (2011's Tao of the Dead ) that likely even the fans in attendance knew less well than their classic material. They [...]

Animation: Lifeline -Losing someone important to you is never easy, and some of us go to great lengths to get them back in our lives. This scenic animation displays the journey of a scientist in search of his lost love, as he braves through a haunted forest, the bottom of the deep blue sea, and far out through the reaches of space. And his only protection to keep him safe is your average air tube, which he remains tethered to throughout the animation's entirety. [...]
If you thought Sonic Youth's song "Do You Believe In Rapture?" was a haunting tune, just wait till you see what Midnight Masses have done with it. Featured on their latest Rapture Ready, I Gazed At The Body EP , the song easily out-sorrows the source. To begin with, Autry Fulbright's vocals are decidedly more forlorn than Thurston Moore's on the original. The addition of melancholy reverb, haunting 'ooh's and some rather ironic, dejected whistling create a beautiful, if not doleful, track. Then there's the video , which takes the downtrodden nature of the [...]

With their second album The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner garnering widespread critical acclaim in advance of its nationwide release, it is safe to say that there was a strong air of anticipation surrounding this special album launch. A limited number of wristbands were available in Tower Records from 9am on Thursday morning and were snapped up within the hour, leaving many fans disappointed – but certainly not the FLApes faithful who queued outside the store from as early as 3am. Lucky competition winners were granted early access [...]
