Just try googling eye images for some squirm-inducing fun. That should prepare you for the literally eye-popping image that illustrates Contrast Podcast #171 . I decided I would rather spend a ridiculous amount of time going through my own photos for a good eye shot. The above turned out to be my favorite. Whose eyes are those? Click on the photograph to see. My choice for the podcast was this great old favorite of mine by a short-lived Portland band called Hazel, whose history I covered in my very first Time [...]

Image From Here Damn, I know I am fucked up. All I want to do these days is hide. Hide from life, hide from everything. It feels safer to me. And the weird thing is I feel the safest when I am hiding behind this computer screen. I can't go out to places and am afraid of interacting with people. It is even almost impossible for me to do simple errands like going to the grocery store. I have a severe case of Agoraphobia. And it is fueled by the depression and anxiety I labor [...]
Justin Townes Earle [Myspace] has a lot to live up to, not only does he bare the last name of songwriting legend, Steve Earle, but he was also named after yet another: his father's hero, Townes Van Zandt. Normally, this amount of pressure would cause any artist to falter, especially one so young (he is [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Justin Townes Earle has a lot to live up to. Not only does he bare the last name of songwriting legend, Steve Earle, but he was also named after yet another, his father's hero, Townes Van Zandt. Normally, this amount of pressure would cause any artist to falter, especially one so young (he is only 27) but where others fail Justin succeeds. From the opening chords of his Sophomore album, "Midnight at the Movies", Justin speaks loudly and confidently and in his own voice and oh what a voice it is. [[ This is a content summary [...]

MIDNIGHT MOVIES Halihazırda iki long-play'i bulunan Midnight Movies saykodelik pop'la indie rock arası bir müzik yapıyor ve Nights adını verdikleri son EP'leri ile beni bir anlamda kalbimden vurdular. Nights in White Satin cover'ı ayrıca dinlenmeli. Souvenirs

Christmas provided a welcome break, but I still have my favorite songs of the year to discuss-and I have a LOT of them. Maybe it's just that I was more determined to find it, but 2008 was a very good year for my particular taste. These favorite songs come after nearly every single track from my favorite albums, from CDs that sometimes had nothing else that grabbed me as hard as one song. So, in no particular order, I'll start here with some mostly from EPs that deserve attention (Yoav's CD is the only full-length). [...]
The Kindness Kind are a band out of Seattle , that has been praised as one of the best bands to emerge from that scene this year by the Toronto Star . The band has also recieved spotlight status from CMJ. The band have recently released their self titled album on which they worked with producer Lucas Carlyle who has worked with The Gossip, The Octopus Project, and the Album Leaf among others. It's a bit off target to call The Kindness Kind "Electro" (as on their myspace) while there are synthesizers [...]
Okay, so here's what I'm going to do from now on: I am going to post a new Wesley Cartoon every Saturday along with a mix. Also, the Wesley drawing competition for a copy of the Bones TV soundtrack is still open, so if you want a copy of the Bones TV soundtrack send a picture of Wesley to me that you drew, compiled, painted, etc to me azltron @yahoo.com. Moving along, Beatrice still tries to relate to Wesley in terms of her current school work load. Maybe he could tutor her? I was feeling particularly mellow this [...]

Speed of Dark has recently passed its second anniversary. I can't promise anything really different in the future, but it's still fun, and we will keep on going until it's not. We have some cool shows coming up in the next few months, and hopefully Uncle T will write about his adventures at Austin City Limits later this month. Thanks to our regular readers--We know you're out there, and we know you are all over the world! Give us a comment once in a while. Midnight Movies : Two Years [...]

THE BEST of 2008 (so far!) SERIES : from LA... Midnight Movies Midnight Movies' Gena Olivier Midnight Movies follow their sophomore LP "Lion The Girl" with the Nights EP (in stores now) on New Line Records (Albert Hammond Jr and Robbers on High Street). The EP album is a wonderful showcase of the band's capabilities - giving [...]

San Francisco based rock group The New Up have crafted an EP entitled Broken Machine that calls on psychadelic influences as well as garage rock influences. They sound something like if you took Midnight Movies, Metric, and The Stills, put them in a blender with some vanilla yogurt, a flute and set it to high. Thier rock is smooth linear affair with some added guitar crunch once in a while, like a female fronted late 80's era Echo & The Bunnymen. Pretty neat. The New Up - Ginger Tea The [...]
Imagine this boy laughing as he holds a group of people hostage at gunpoint. Imagine this boy doing an elaborate fire dance for tourists. Imagine this boy throwing a fit because his parents bought him the "wrong kind of Lunchables!" Imagine this boy delivering a speech to his class, and being really, really freaked out. Imagine this boy totally missing a jumping high five. Imagine this kid doing a quantum leap, ending up in the body of a black civil rights activist in the 1960's. Imagine this kid eating [...]

Midnight Movies are an interesting band from Los Angeles that have been around since 2002 but I am just finding out about. Sorry if this is beating a dead horse and proof that I am losing my edge but their new digital Nights EP is really great the same way that the new Portishead and Vivian Girls records are great. The release is bookended by excellent covers of the Moody Blues classic Nights in White Satin , with the album closer [...]

Meet Princeton . They are a three piece, consisting of Jesse and Matt Kivel and Ben Usen, hailing from Los Angeles. I first heard of them through My Old Kentucky Blog and was instantly was drawn to their sparse folkish arrangements with poppy melodies from their first EP entitled "A Case of the Emperor's New Clothes EP". Their next release entitled "the Bloomsbury EP" is set to be released in the summer and currently they are touring with the Vampire Weekend in the states, but with any luck, they [...]
