January being the birth month of Allen Toussaint , I thought I'd come back from my year-end break and devote a few posts to some music associated with him, as I used to do on my old radio show, and here some years past. On another note, I'll also be putting up some Carnival-related tunes in the coming weeks, as the season is now rolling with Twelfth Night just past and Mardi Gras just a bit more than a month away. But, back to Toussaint [...]

My fave music of summer has always been roots reggae. And as it´s gotten kinda hot here over the last couple of weeks - joder, que calor! - I find myself skanking the time away more and more often. Here´s a tenpack selection of boss sounds from the Island I´ve been enjoying lately. Abyssinians - Satta Massagana MP3 Wailing Souls - Bredda Gravalicious MP3 Ras Ibuna - Diverse Doctrine MP3 Augustus Pablo - Stop Them Jah [...]

Built To Spill - Re-Arrange [...]
When folks mention the Mighty Diamonds, this disc usually isn't the first thing that comes to mind. It should be though. And even if it's not inna showcase style, the disc being split... [More after the jump...]

Although Bob Marley sold millions of albums and undertook several sold-out tours, reggae has rarely made inroads on commercial radio in the States. In fact, one of the '80s iconic one-hit wonders, Musical Youth, were likely the first exposure for many pop music fans to reggae. Formed while the members were schoolchildren in Birmingham, England by Frederick Waite, an ex-member of Jamaican group The Techniques and father of two of Musical Youth's members, the group had secured a record deal within two years of assembling. Their debut album, The Youth Of Today , instantly made waves upon [...]

Thanks god it´s Friday... and I guess you all know what that means by now. Yup, it´s Grab Bag time again, where you get to hear the highlights of my personal musical diet of the past week. Tonight Grab Bag goes country big time, with no less than three fine novelty songs featuring southern accents, steel guitars and twang. But that´s not all folks. Also got the Soulsavers for you, with a track from last year´s wonderful collaboration with Mark Lanegan. Plus there´s a new group called Community Gun just begging to be introduced, and the reggae pick of the [...]

It's time for the third annual Christmas post. I really enjoy putting them together, it's one of the few things that gets me in the holiday mood - the readers seem to like them as well, since these posts usually receive between 50,000-100,000 hits over the year. So, without further ado... The Moonglows were one of the most seminal R&B and doowop innovators. In 1959, on the way to Motown, some guy named Marvin Gaye replaced legendary leader Harvey Fuqua. On March 6, 2000, The Moonglows were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. [...]
