World Tour: Believe - World Tour is an ambient electro band from Sweden. World Tour have a number of elements that make them who they are. Taking cues from mid-to-late 80s brit-pop like Echo And The Bunnymen and The Mighty Lemon Drops , World Tour has a sound that isn't isolated to a strict formula. Add to that some ambiance through the use of synthesizers and echoey vocals and you begin to understand what I'm talking about. There are a couple of things to mention about this record before I get [...]

So Barry-Sean was in his parents attic over Christmas sorting some stuff out and discovered some old mixtapes that we used to listen to a lot - this was one from 1987 that B-S has modernised into a digital playlist on his iTunes. Even though it is nearly 25 years ago - there are some cracking tunes on there from many of the cream of that era's indie-crop, and perhaps some that haven't stood the test of time quite so well ( Fields of the Nephilim , two tracks from the Alarm ...). [...]
After years of producing and engineering on albums for bands like The Little Ones, The Blood Arm, Kissing Tigers, Death To Anders, The Lassie Foundation, and handfuls of other bands, former guitarist for The Mighty Lemon Drops David Newton has unveiled a project of his very own called David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels. The first single, "Paint The Town" is bright and melodic with pop sensibilities while maintaining a post-punk edge. The single comes from the EP of the same name, which you can pick up now on iTunes . Newton has also made plans for [...]

Former Mighty Lemon Drops guitarist and songwriter turned producer/engineer David Newton, has resurfaced as a player once again with his latest outfit David Newton & Thee Might Angels and just released the Paint The Town EP. I have to admit that my interest in some of the new music that is coming out these days has been fading in favor of revisiting some of the older stuff that occupied my time. The Mighty Lemon Drops were definitely a favorite of mine for awhile until they disbanded in 1992. Happy Head, World Without End, [...]

As guitarist and songwriter for the U.K. quartet the Mighty Lemon Drops (1985-92), David Newton fashioned buoyant melodies out of spry chord progressions and jangling riffs for a band largely remembered for being part of the C86 movement . He married an American girl and settled in southern California in 1995, setting aside songwriting and performing (save some sideman gigs) in favor of producing — out of Newton's garage studio in Burbank came music from the likes of the Little Ones, the Soft Pack, the Henry Clay People, Eddie Argos' project Everybody Was In The French Resistance ... Now, [...]

Craft Spells: Idle Labor - I'm noticing a lot of bands getting their influences from 80s new wave... maybe its just me. The good thing is, some bands are actually achieving a perfect balance between the past and the present. Another one of those bands is Craft Spells . With Idle Labor , Craft Spells spin tales of love, loss and all of the other romantic things you'd expect to a soundtrack of near-perfect dreamy synth pop. What makes them most unique from others in the genre(which is getting more crowded all the [...]

To hear the jangling swell of Fonda's new song "Better Days," you'd think another in the flood of this era's shoegazing dreampop bands was announcing its arrival. Fact is, the Los Angeles quintet was mixing its fuzzy, Britpop-inspired concoctions around the time of the Y2K scare (remember that?), coaxing bittersweet gems out of an old Farfisa organ, boy-girl vocals and a thin frosting of feedback. What happened? Life intervened. Principals Dave Klotz and Emily Cook, abetted by guitarist/producer David Newton (once of British rockers the Mighty Lemon Drops ) made three albums and an EP between 1998 [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: Captured nicely in the British neo-psychedelia vessels were alternative bands like Railway Children, The Mighty Lemon Drops and The Wonderstuff . All trying to sound in parts like Echo & The Bunnymen and sometimes unconsciously like the poppier side of Dinosour Jr. Years later it's Two Thousand Eleven and enters Red Light Driver 's 4th release. These Indianapolis, US rockers are as much a flashback to this sound as they are filled with spot-on swirly pop guitars like said music movement from the late 802s. This band shows that they are actually from the midwest [...]

To mark the 25th anniversary of the cassette that launched a genre, Test Pressing is streaming NME's C86 Mixtape. When C86 was originally released, I remember thinking many of these bands were sappy copycats, neutering my old post-punk favorites like the Bunnymen and The Cure. Little did I know these youngsters would spawn all the indie pop that I love today in my 402s! Check out a nice 25th anniversary reflection over at The Quietus . Track Listing after the jump... NME's Classic C86 Mixtape Track [...]

It is thanks to a couple of compadres who first mentioned these football and musical items, both of which have reached the same anniversary... The first one was from the now sadly defunct I'm Not Always So Stupid blog who originally owed and scanned the very first edition of When Saturday Comes . It was a hand crafted, lovingly put together football fanzine which eventually became the source and King of all the fanzines. WSC has now reached it's 25th anniversary and throughout those years has managed to survive Gazza, [...]

MUSIC REVIEW: Putting hair on a band based out of Brooklyn that sounds like a real rock band is not so difficult. I'm personally tired of bands with headbands and mustaches. That's so 2010 on the bad breath-o-meter. Give me regular dudes who make music with a tight rythem section and a singer who has some British swagger although from North America and can hit some notes alla Robin Zander (Cheap Trick) on vocals any day and we're in good shape. A sense of humor is optional at that point but sticking with any carny's breakfast heroes storyline protects [...]

After a brief hiatus, I've returned to cover a few records that came out at the end of last year and also to celebrate something very special. And it is because this occasion is so special that I've prepared a speech: Our first year online [pause for applause] Thank you for reading last year, now and in the future. You are the stars [pause for applause] Yes, one year is a long time, but my love for you all will never die [pause for applause] Thank [...]

Very special episode of Danger Radio. We play the legendary and rarely found C86 album in it's entirety in order. Along the way we discuss the bands and what it all means to myself and my co-host Jake Ryan. This is one of about 5 albums I can point to that shaped my musical tastes and I'm proud to say that it sits at the top of that list. PLAYLIST: Velocity Girl – Primal Scream Happy Head – The Mighty Lemon Drops Pleasantly Surprised – The [...]

![Review: The Hush Now | Constellations [MP3]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1949848_lg.jpg)
Spoiler Alert: As one inevitably approaches his fortieth or fiftieth listen to the opening cut on The Hush Now 's sophomore set -- because it is that good -- the revelation strikes that the pulsing flow of the lyrics to "Contrails" suggests Chuck D's in the greatest hip-hop song of all time, "Don't Believe The Hype" (" they can't come on and play me in prime time ..."). That tangent aside, vocals and keyboard tower over the other elements of "Contrails," and we wish someone had depressed the " Superchunk Guitars" button during the mixing session for that [...]

I started making a mixtape for a friend recently and have since found myself listening to The Mighty Lemon Drops more than continuing work on the mix. It happens. Albums will collect dust until the next time I drag them out when I create a new mixtape (which doesn't happen very often). I'm not sure why, but I value mixtape giving more than most teenage girls value giving up their virginity these days. I've been analyzing it a bit too much lately and have come to [...]
Hey ya'll and welcome to another round of Outloud. In this week's edition, I am going to be continuing my series on beloved one hit wonders of punk rock. If you remember last week we...
Music bloggers get invited to rock shows. It's a regular occurrence. And so -- when it is a band we like and we're not feeling lazy -- we cover them, either on our own dime or on someone else's. But we'd never been invited into a recording studio during our stint as a music blogger prior to receiving an invitation from new Boston-based indie rock quartet The Hush Now . Despite not yet releasing its debut, the band, fronted by songwriter and guitarist Noel Kelly, is already hard at work at recording a second set. As we had just [...]
