Just because Mike Bones inhabits inside the present-day talent pool of New York doesn't mean he's all new woven punk and riveting anecdotes, prep'd up to vie with contemporaries of Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Amazing Baby. He is however pretty darn gifted, and prefers to shelve out a more euphoric pop-based stringy anthem rather than just another single of the year like 'Kids' or 'A Punk'. Forty-odd plays in and I'm still not sick of 'What I Have Left'. Judging by his Myspage page he doesn't gig all that much either, which as much as it is annoying, gives him [...]

Blood On The Wall "Junkeee...Julieee..." - Do you think Mark Arm gets annoyed when he hears this guy's voice, or does he get excited, shout something like "I finally have a legacy, motherfuckers!," and start a little mosh pit with whoever happens to be in close proximity? It really ought to be the latter, especially when you factor in Brad Shanks' knack for bitter humor and casual screaming. "Junkeee...Julieee..." isn't anywhere near as slow and hesitant as the title implies -- if anything, it's early '90s grunge-punk in the form of [...]
Many years ago, my cousin Glenn drove from his home in Montreal to my family home on the West Island to babysit me and my brothers and sister. Along with him he brought an armful of albums and in that pile was my first musical obsession... Elton John. I can't recall what albums I heard that day, but a huge impression was made upon my musical consciousness that night. I think it must have been 1971 and one of the records was likely Tumbleweed Connection. Here's one of my faves from that album, done live at the Fillmore in 1970, [...]
