Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Ryan Stinson - FUTURA What does it say that a healthy portion of the new hip hop albums I'm the most excited to hear these days are often if the instrumental variety? Well I think it mainly says I'm a confirmed, curmudgeonly hip hop get-off-my-lawner, but I'd like to think that it also means there are plenty of talented folks in Canada making that kind of music. Ryan Stinson is one of these talented folks. The Saskatchewan-based producer has [...]

Let me say this, if there's a Juno for "Best Instrumental Hip Hop Album with a Name That Kind of Sounds Like a Word But Isn't Actually a Word, I Don't Think", then Vancouver-based producer should be a two-time winner by now. I loved his last album, Umbrellatons and after being through it a few times, it's safe to say that I like his new one, Calmmunicate just as much. In discussing Mike's last album, I lamented the seeming dearth of the kind of "real" hip hop instrumental albums that used to be more [...]

When they sent me their new album, 5 Year Journey , it struck me that Vancouver hip hop outfit Self-Taught chose a very appropriate name for themselves. I'm sure it certainly describes how they learned their craft, but to me, it's fitting because the guys that invented hip hop actually created this movement & music that we all love by teaching themselves how to cut a record and move the crowd whilst on the mic. So anyhoo, I enjoy Self-Taught's name, but what of their album? ST is actually a 3-man crew: MC/Producers Vintage and [...]

Hey, remember when it used to relatively easy to find a "producer" album that didn't exclusively feature "club bangers" that are filled with features from the current buzzworthy MC's? Actually, many of you are likely young enough that you don't remember such a thing, but in the late 902s & early 002s, there were albums like these that featured sound collages assembled from scratches & vocal samples over top notch production. Now I'm not saying no one is doing this now, just that it certainly seems like a lost art, but if you miss these albums like I [...]
