Monday Music's the one weekly post wherein Some Of It Was True! drops its London-only rule. Waskerley Way - Sista An electro shanty with one motherlicker of a build-up, Sista opens with some Underworld -esque revolving swishy noises before breaking into some 6/8 - a bit Leftfield (in both senses), and from there, it just intensifies to some brilliant electro noise. This geordie producer gets extra points for pioneering the feline-influenced genres 'meowgaze' and 'catwave'. Cracking. [...]

SXSW has it all in March, namely tons of music from artists you'll be hearing about more in the coming months. In a small series preluding the music session that goes from March 13-18, we'll be focusing in on some of the collective efforts of labels and PR companies collecting in Austin. We wish we could cover every group that is playing down there, but as Bandcamp states, there are over 400 artists going to be there. If you have a label or PR company, big or small, that you want featured, email us with your lineup card. [...]

Milagres played a polished, assured set to a packed house this Thursday night at Mercury Lounge. The last time I saw this Brooklyn five-piece (about a year ago at the same venue) their stage demeanor was entirely different. Now, seasoned by months of tour including an overseas stint, the band plays with bolstered confidence. The common factor? Mercury Lounge was pretty darn full up for both shows. Milagres has and clearly has had a devoted following for quite some time – fans sang along, cheered for favs like "Here to Stay," and vied to claim their stakes towards [...]
Brooklyn's Milagres are back with another indie rock jam. Titled"Quiet Street", the track follows the mellow footsteps of their debut album Glowing Mouth via Kill Rock Stars ( The Decemberists , Xiu Xiu , Gossip ). It begins with Wilson's canny utterance of "I should have known" over a swaying rhythm of the drums. "Quiet Street" was exclusively released on iTunes in the UK and it is finally released to the U.S as of last week, through the premiere on Paste Magazine . Along with this revival of Milagres, the band has a [...]

Brooklyn-based band Milagres don't have a groundbreaking sound but they've previously proven themselves adept in building indie-emotional-pop walkabouts in the same vein as The National or The Antlers on their first album Seven Summits in 2008. The group's second album Glowing Mouth attempts to immerse the band further into tension-packed melancholia and often end up reminiscent of Arcade Fire's obsessions ('Here to Stay', 'Gentle Beast', 'Fright of Thee'). Stadium-sized synthesizers and over-the-top drum sounds sometimes aren't enough and the lazy hopping in night-wonders of 'Lost In The Dark', the throbbing [...]

Milagres' debut album would sound a lot better if we hadn't heard it several times over already. It can quite easily be filed next to Wild Beasts and Grizzly Bear under indie-rock, but it's always going to be the poor relation. Nice enough to listen to I suppose and there is nothing wrong with it per se. In fact, it really is a rather good album. Each track builds up nicely, and although at times lead vocalist Kyle Wilson's lyrics are hard to make out, they sit nicely on the record. The problems come when you [...]

Brooklyn's Milagres release new album 'Glowing Mouth' in the UK this week and you can get the Arcade Fire-ish track 'Here To Stay' for free. Here To Stay by Milagres

What's instantly noticeable about Milagres is how much they don't sound like a Brooklyn band. There's no garage rock, no punk, no real out-there sonic experimentation... but there is some indie rock, with some gentle post-Antlers, post-Grizzly Bear ambient and electronic jiggery-pokery added on. Debut album Glowing Mouth is almost sweet in its traditional approach to proceedings, but a threat of dullness hangs heavy in the air... Milagres were originally called The Secret Life of Sofia - which we can all agree is a dreadful name [...]

ALBUMS OF THE YEAR #20 - #16 #20 Peaking Lights - 936 - Key Sparrow ( MP3 ) Peaking Lights are a relatively new phenomena in my world; their sound is one characterised by thick, dubby basslines and wrangled psychedelic vibratos. This isn't reggae, but has some of the same appeal, especially when taken with the sunken Warpaint-style vocals which weave throughout '936'. As the band themselves put it on the Domino website, interestingly, "it's not linear, it's a cycle. A bunch of circles rotating at different speeds but still intertwined like [...]
