Dear Captain Awesome, I'm writing you this email because my ears are exhausted from listening to new age music and I would like you to help me discover new genres of music (Well, new for me and I suppose, old for the world). As a child I've been exposed to Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong and I've been singing standard songs like 'Funny Valentine' and 'Summertime' ever since I could remember, but I haven't really taken the time to make jazz music my own. Actually, I haven't even taken the time to acquaint myself with [...]

We were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of the great Sam Rivers. That last name is as right as rain - his talents were so varied, multifarious, they were like streams that fed into the greater ocean of jazz. Best known as great saxophonist equally adept at the tenor and soprano, he was also a remarkable flutist and pianist, who quietly put his stamp on both instruments. As anyone who has seen Rivers live can attest, he was an astonishing improviser who could instantly summon pieces that were both dramatic and affecting, wrought in [...]
The recordings from their 1967 European tour are some of the only existing documentation of the band performing compositions from the extraordinary series of studio albums they made between 1965-1967 -- E.S.P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer and Nefertiti. Now fans can hear live versions of "Agitation" (from E.S.P.), "Footprints" and "Gingerbread Boy" ( from Miles Smiles), "Masquelero" (from Sorcerer

I figure by now everyone is tired of holiday music, so I decided I wouldn't put you all through more of that. Today I'm featuring a cozy song (to stay in and drink hot cocoa on this snowy day, especially for those who are experiencing the Denver weather), without any holiday sentiment to it. "Moon Dreams" comes from Miles Davis's 1957 release The Birth of the Cool – a compilation of 78rpm singles from 1949-1959 – the record that started the West Coast sound in jazz, otherwise known as cool jazz, the more orchestrated, often slower, [...]

UPDATE: Thought we'd re-post some of our more popular Christmas efforts; this one gets requests every year. This was one of the coolest albums of Christmas music ever. Originally released in 1962, this unassuming little compilation featured an all-star cast of jazz luminaries like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and others. It was reissued on vinyl in 1980 (cover pictured above) but now it has disappeared into the mists of time. Don't bother looking for it on CD - [...]

Not a whole heck of a lot to talk about. the RHCP reissue is pretty cool I guess. I love me some Miles Davis. If you like the Gorillaz you probably already have all "The Singles" so I don't really see the point there. Today, you can color me... meh. Adele: Live At the Royal Albert Hall (CD/DVD) Beyonce: Live at Roseland: The Elements of 4 [dvd] Captain Beefheart: Doc at the Radar Station (reissue) [vinyl] Chadwick [...]

Here, you might think, is a girl staring up at sky, a cat having a meal, a maple tree in autumn. But there is your first mistake. This modern world we inhabit is forever offering up its lazy, overstuffed illusions to swallow. And swallow, we do. Perhaps it is less complicated this way. When you see a girl staring up at the sky, you don't have to imagine her grasping for air, uncertain as to whether she is alive or dead, the science she applies to this task so urgently as she asks the cold spine of stars if they [...]
