I happened to spot Dogfish Head Brewery found Sam Calagione wearing a Melvins shirt in the documentary Beer Wars while perusing Netflix late one night. Sensing an appreciation for music that doesn't suck, I got in touch with Sam and asked if we could talk about his love for music. Little did I know at the time that Dogfish Head was getting ready to premiere a show on the Discovery Channel called Brewed, which starts Nov. 21. When I was watching a beer documentary and all of a sudden I [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Carlos Santana and Clive Davis have made musical history with a partnership that has spanned over four decades. "We started together, I signed the original Santana band, we went through a great career with 'Evil Ways,' 'Oye Como Va,' 'Black Magic Woman,' others," Davis tells Spinner. The two then reteamed more than 20 years later for 'Supernatural,' the duets album that was such a success, it even caught [...]

Filed under: Between the Notes On the documentary that accompanied Sony's 50th anniversary reissue of Miles Davis ' enduring classic 'Kind of Blue,' the sublime rapper Q-Tip noted the ubiquity of the best-selling jazz album of all time. "It's like the Bible," he said. "You just have one in your house." At $749 (marked down from an initial asking price of $1,199), the colossal, limited-edition new boxed set 'The Genius of Miles Davis' -- a 43-CD collection of [...]

Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Vince Guaraldi, Wes Montgomery - all sounding great on these reissued classics.

He's one of the 100 greatest guitarists of the 20th Century, now playing in the 21st Century. Don't take my word for it. That statement was made by Musician Magazine . Don't take Musician Magazine's word for it. Listen to Robben Ford on his 1995 release Handful Of Blues . This is the ultimate blues rocker album. Ford, with his then band "the Blue Line" (bassist Roscoe Beck and drummer Tom Brechtlein) provide a master lesson in rock guitar blues. Ford blazes through classic Chicago-style ("When I [...]

I forgot who passed this along to me (sorry dude, your email got archived automatically), but I'm glad they did. These couple of tracks are off of Miles Davis' Doo-Bop LP from 1992, an album that's, dare I say, a "fusion" of jazz and hip-hop. And just look at album art, damn. Thanks again to the dude who passed these along! Miles Davis - The Doo Bop Song [...]

Today I have the big honor to present you a fabulous musician, who had probably the most influence in my life since I know his music (which only begun to me in 1983). The tune was the first in a row of the so-called Columbia Studio E recording sessions, which started in 1972 and ended with his mid-70s-retirement in 1976. One year earlier he played his last concert in Japan. His retirement because of abusing drugs and being sick should last at least 5 years, rather he did rise again like the Phoenix from the cinder. The today's track is [...]

Channeling George Harrison should be no big deal for Carlos Santana . He told us long ago that Miles Davis told him to perform with Rob Thomas ...of course, Miles was dead at the time of the conversation. But, in a world where all things are possible (see The Saints Win The Super Bowl ), who's to say getting advice from dead rock stars can't happen.

////////////////////////////// /////////////////////////// Miles Davis - So What Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Julian Adderley, and Jimmy Cobb recorded 'SO WHAT' (and the entire album, Kind Of Blue ) in one take and without any rehearsal. Growing up I used to jam on my trumpet to this song, throwing my classical trumpet homework aside. I've always wanted to be Miles. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Julian Adderley, et Jimmy Cobb ont enregistré SO WHAT (ainsi que l'album entier, Kind Of Blue [...]

Filed under: All About Jazz I've gone on record more than once saying I lean more toward John Coltrane than Miles Davis . Yet such is the magnitude of Davis' legacy that it is impossible for either jazz fan or jazz critic to avoid spending considerable time listening to the trumpeter. No jazz musician I can think of was recorded more often. No leader I can think of had more of his sidemen go on to become stars in their own [...]

Oh boy. We're in for trouble. The greatest albums...of all time? Are they nuts? Where do they get the nerve? Wait 'til they hear my piece of mind! All thoughts racing through your temples right now. (That is, if you're even taking the time to read this.) But, think about it: You love these lists. We do, too. But more on that in a second. For now, try and imagine the culture we live in. The idea of learning about someone through conversation, or even something as rudimentary as spending time together, is so "old-fashioned" and so "passe." Nope. Anything [...]
