Well, this has us damn excited. As huge fans of Beulah here at HAD, we've been lamenting the band's breakup for the better part of 6 years. After the band's (fantastic) final show at The Fillmore, frontman Miles Kurosk y told us he was already at work on a solo record. As such, we've been waiting on the record with bated breath ever since. Fast forward to today, and we're happy to say that the ship has come in. Kurosky has in fact been hard at work on [...]
In this week's edition of From the Closet we bring you the band Beulah . I was fortunate enough to catch them for the second time on their final tour for their album Yoko. Needless to say, I was quite a fan of the group; their blend of sunny pop fused with horns and perfect backing vocals just fit that time of my life. I still travel back in time with their classic record The Coast is Never Clear , which everyone really needs to have in their collection; you [...]

Paul O'Valle Before the passing of Jay Reatard on Wednesday - condolences to his friends, family and fans - the topic du jour in the indie nation was what was up with Joanna Newsom . Everyone's favourite harpist hadn't released any new music since 2007's Joanna Newsom & The Ys Street Band EP, itself a chaser for the epic Ys , and while anyone is entitled to a break after putting something like that together, fans were certainly getting anxious for some [...]

I know what you're thinking. Who is Miles Kurosky and what does he have to do with Portland? Though he isn't a household name (just yet, anyway) Kurosky is worth mention because he was the singer and main songwriter for San Francisco band Beulah, who, in my humble opinion, released the best Elephant 6 related record not named In the Aeroplane Over the Sea . Beulah's When Your Heartstrings Break remains one of the landmarks of the '90s, and though the band released two albums after that, it splintered in 2003 and not much has been heard [...]

Merge Last week, I was complaining that with the US holiday season, there wasn't nearly enough blog fodder trickling out of the interwebs. This week, it's like a deluge. We begin wading through it all in Scandinavia, particularly Stockholm, Sweden, home of the Shout Out Louds . The quintet turned in one of the indie-pop highlights of 2007 with Our Ill Wills and are set to follow it up with the release of Work . For this outing, they've opted to [...]
Miles Kurosky's proper LP will see daylight in March via Shout Factory! Visit Miles Kurosky on MySpace. MP3: Beulah - What Will You Do When Your Suntan Fades?
As Miles Kurosky puts it on his MySpace , "Some guy named Miles Kurosky is putting out his first solo record in March 2010. Sounds intriguing. I should probably start saving my pennies." And that says it all, folks. According to Pitchfork , the former Beluah frontman has signed with Shout! Factory subsidiary Majordomo and will release his debut solo album in March of 2010. No word on other specifics quite yet, though if you head on over to Kurosky's website , it looks like the title of said [...]

Lucy Hamblin Ridiculous webhosting issues persist, so this one will be kept reasonably brief - who knows how long this window of opportunity of my site being up will remain. I've actually been told that the issues that've plagued the site for the past week or so have been resolved and am hoping that's the case, but if'n you find that things are unbearably slow or down altogether, swing by my Twitter for all sorts of colourful cursing. While downloadable/streamable/watcha ble online sessions are becoming much more commonplace, MySpace Transmissions is setting [...]

fly high, surly frontman! Pitchfork - Former Beulah Frontman Miles Kurosky Prepares Debut Solo Album Woo! Finally! Some questions: Will "An Apple For An Apple", the song that's been posted on his Myspace page for the past year, be on that album? Will it sound a lot better than this low-quality version I just found online, which is clearly a rip from the Myspace page? Miles Kurosky - An Apple For An Apple Will [...]
If you were the type to make intuitive leaps of thought, you could surmise from the splash screen of Miles Kurosky's web site that the ex-Beulah frontman has a new album out this year called "Rad Autumn." ... Either that or it's called "Rad" and will be out in Autumn '09. My money's on the [...]
