In this instalment in the Covered With Soul series we have a second selection of soul songs covered by soul acts. We have met most of the featured artists before, perhaps none more so than Erma Franklin. Here we have Erma covering a song originally performed by her bigger sister, Aretha Franklin (whose 70th birthday we have just celebrated). One act here is quite unlike any of the others we have heard in this series: Una Valli was not only white (as were the Flaming Embers), but also South African, having some local success as a soul singer in the [...]

I posted Antony & The Johnsons not that long ago , but in the still-warm afterglow of his February 24 San Francisco performance, I was listening to pretty much all the Antony I had and got knocked out by this one. It's a cover of a 1971 tune originally done by heavy Vedge crush Millie Jackson . So here you go, with a double dose video-wise of one of my favorite Antony originals. Antony & The Johnsons - A Child Of God (It's Hard To Believe) from [...]

It's too bad that the Internet age of fire-and-forget mass forwarding and a few questionable album covers have sullied Millie Jackson's good name, because she has one of the truly unique voices in R&B. Her twin masterpieces, Caught Up and Still Caught Up (now commonly sold together ) are powerful statements that view adultery from two feminine points of a love triangle. Throughout the two suites, she plays the part of both the mistress and the spurned wife. Caught Up is the stronger of the two records, and the prurient [...]

Hey, people, listen - I've been trying really hard these past 38 years to keep abreast of matters. I don't know how this happens. It's possibly that there simply is so so very much beauty. What happened was I somehow missed out on Millie Jackson until recently. But the discovery process since then has been delightful. Today's song is from 1974's Caught Up , a concept album in which Jackson examines both the feelings of a married man's mistress and those of his wife. There are songs (you probably know "If Loving You [...]

Millie Jackson was the original disco queen of raunch. She was very a controversial figure in the day and that hampered big mainstream success. She got her start in 1964 after winning a talent show in a Harlem nightclub. She went on to get signed by Polydor and put out her first single in 1970 followed by an LP in 1972. She continued to put out records throughout the 70's and 80's. In the 80's put out two records that grace many worst album cover ever lists, find them here: E.S.P. (Extra Sexual [...]

Photography by Pixelwelten Happy new year! Hope you enjoyed (and are still enjoying) our Most Awesomest Tsururific Albums of 2007 with Accompanying Mixtape!!! Though I never understood people's fascination with zeros in dates or "new years" (it really is just another day afterall), I do understand the need to move on and put the past to rest, a man-made day called "new year's day" is as good a time as any, right? So, I thought to myself, what better [...]
Very briefly: Following is a small collection of songs that are united by one simple theme -- noteworthy spoken word introductions. Your job is to determine which of the introductions is the most noteworthy of all. Is it: a.) Stan Ivory (and his Omnificent Orchestra)'s smoove mooves in Give Me the Real Thang ? b.) Millie Jackson threatening her lover's wife with "a good A-kickin'" in Leftovers ? c.) Jerry Washington extolling the virtues of pure, selfless love in I Come A Long Ways ? [...]

This month's WFMU DJ mp3 collection is Monica's stunning "Feelin' Bitchy" from 2005, featuring the awe-inspiring Feelin' Bitchy Monologue Medley , (mp3) produced by the one and only Steinski. (14 mp3s below) Here's how Monica tagged it for the '05 FMU marathon: A sassy stash of 60s and 70s soul sisters bust out the baddest and bitchiest man-eating monologues, raunchy raps and "tell it like it is" tracks. Dedicated to the fine art of homewreckin', heartbreakin', and all other manner of down [...]

It's true, but I still love her. As scorned and bitter as she was (and maybe still is), that girl could sing and sure had some heart (mostly broken I assume). When she was "rappin" way back in the 70's she had quite a few things to say. Check "The Rap" - now that's a straight up rant cut. Like I said, Millie got issues. "It's All Over But The Shouting" is one of my all time favorite Millie cuts. In my humble opinion, she fell off a bit in the 80's, but all the 70's [...]

I hate schmoozing. Hate, hate, hate it. And small talk is something I'm frankly just shit at. Mainly, I think, because I find it nigh on impossible to feign interest in things that frankly, I couldn't care less about. It all just seems so false. So why, I ask myself, did I allow myself to be roped into an afternoon of schmoozing and small talk? Because alas, it's part of my job and 'The Man' dictates that mingle I must. That is, if you can class mixing witty [...]
