This beautiful track "Walking In The Air" was uncovered by The Music Ninja a couple days back. The song itself is a wonderful folk escapade, with soothing vocals and varied instrumentation. BAM! Bet you were expecting a Best of 2011 list, yeah? Well I don't got time for that (YET)! No...this is where I acknowledge all the great stuff I missed in 2010. 'Cause it doesn't get any more rock n roll than to talk about shit that's over a year old. Write that down in your How to Be Rock N Roll notebooks. Anyway, the last time I wrote this list , I spent quite a while talking about how there isn't enough time in one year to listen to all the potentially great releases and put [...]

Thank you to all of the current and past veterans out there today. It's a remarkable sacrifice you've made, and your efforts to protect and support the U.S. are appreciated. Across the world, we celebrate Armistice Day as well. Hopefully, we can move toward a global society that relies on diplomacy and not war to settle its disputes. As today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of this new millenium, we're re-posting Blogophilia 11. So, if you havent already, download it and crank it to 11. Look for Friday's Free [...]

And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]
There is more to Bend than beautiful sights and crippling unemployment. The folks behind Visit Bend want you to bring your family to their city, and they even made this neat little video that just so happens to feature a tune from Portland (not Bend) artists Mimicking Birds . "Burning Stars" is off the band's self-titled debut, which was released on Isaac Brock's Glacial Pace imprint last year. Outsourcing your musical needs to another city can't be ideal, but when Matisyahu and some woman from Danity Kane are your most famous [...]

Answering the question, "what have you done for me lately?" this playlist of newish songs released within the past year showcases a variety of current rock n roll greats: Drive-By Truckers Iron & Wine Ryan Bingham Noah & The Whale Tennis Pete & The Pirates Ruby Coast Girls Mimicking Birds [...]
One of the more poppy songs off the Portland trios self-titled debut album provides you with this morning's deep thoughts - "all we are is burning stars..."

After skipping out on December, I almost was gonna do the same for January, but I've been hit by a train of good music lately, so I thought I'd share a few of the tracks that have been dominating my headphones this month. Expanding through a couple different genres there should be something here for everyone. Enjoy! millionyoung "calrissian" ryan gosling "you always hurt the ones you love" modest mouse "cowboy dan" the good life [...]

Last week, I was sent a recommendation for Mimicking Birds , the moniker representing Portland singer/songwriter Nate Lacy. It wasn't any accident that this was recommended to me due in large to my obsession with Modest Mouse . Isaac Brock's influence is prominent throughout Mimicking Birds self-titled full-length, as it should be seeing as how he produced the record. "Burning Stars" is a perfect representation of the swooning angular folk produced by Lacy, dashing through soft traditional feel-good pop courtesy of Lacy's careful delivery. Mimicking [...]
Originally I was considering calling this post something along the lines of "2010 albums that should have been on your top 50 but probably weren't." I've since come to the realization that this wasn't quite right. For one, that is way too long of a title for a post. But at the same time, it is a little unfair for me to impose my views about these albums on everyone else, so I thought that it might be better to just let you guys take a listen. Still, the sentiment remains the same. It is 2011 now, and I've read countless [...]

And so, another year marches to a close - another fantastic, adventure-filled, technicolor year. It's the time when all of us start kicking around our neatly-bulleted lists of bests and worsts. For me, the more I read these lists, the more I feel that I missed more albums and artists than I heard this year. The stats are staggering: in 2002, about 33,000 albums were released. In 2006 that number was 75,000. Last year close to 100,000 albums were released, with only roughly 800 of those albums selling more than 5K. It's tough out [...]

For a very long time, I've made a mix entitled Music to Combat Commuting Doldrums. It started as a joke for a friend who graduated college before me, and was now faced with a daily commute. If you've ever tried to navigate the highways outside of a major metropolitan area, you can identify with the title. The MCCD series is now limited to a spring mix and an end-of-year mix. It's not intended to be a "best of" mix, but rather a bunch of songs I enjoyed from the past year. I am also mixing a Best of Blogophilia for [...]

![Jason Isbell w/ Langhorne Slim @ The Earl, Atlanta [Concert Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2936878_lg.jpg)
Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit need to be witnessed in the South. I had seen Isbell with and without the 400 Unit in San Francisco before relocating, but the crowd wasn't quite right and Isbell's performance felt less genuine. That was not the case last Friday night at The Earl in Atlanta. The ex-Drive-By Trucker from Muscle Shoals, Alabama took the stage to a packed house of Southerners hellbent on singing every line of every song. The night also included Langhorne Slim, Jesse Sykes and Phil Wandscher, and Mimicking Birds as part of the Paste Magazine Tour. [...]

I've been unabashedly reveling in every morning where we evade the chill for one more day, where I can ride my bike to work in a skirt and short sleeve shirt, where I can sit on the porch after dinner and not feel that mercury drop and the gooseflesh form. But hey - all that stopped early this week, with a final burst of indian summer and the subsequent autumn arrival. Time for scarves and cider and music that makes me feel thoughtful, wistful, warm. Once the inspiration hit, this mix was almost harder than the summer [...]
