Blown-out funk dreamer from India, SHAH MARG , independently released his debut EP, Desert , about a week back. The 4 track psychedelic adventure themes around organic drum rhythms and chimey manjira jingles all waving in and out of the blistering desert sun. Every track is an instrumental and all of them are blown-out. Really sweet melodies to the ears. Grab the whole thing for free and show this guy some love...

Nifkin teams up with his Sweden native friend, Hedener to give That's Deck a first listen exclusive of their debut collaborative track, 'Shivari'. The drowning industrial tune takes path on the road not taken. A dark eerie shadow that lurks like a reflection underwater. No foreground nor background. Just sharp-edged in between noises that rock back and forth. Frustrating and confusing yet exhilarating and intoxicating. Download and listen to, 'Shivari', below... London sound-tripper, AyGeeTee has been around for a while putting out hazy chillwave visions and only now has it been brought to my attention that I havent talked about him before. He's a member of the great Amdiscs Label as well if you already did not know. AyGeeTee left a pair of his experimentations in my inbox the other day. 'New Water' and 'Fake Water' are both to be heard at really loud levels of volume. His intricate rhythms bend the sound waves to create a euphoria of cascading bass and ethereal synths. Listen [...]

Some Ember debuts a full length album entitled, Hotel of Lost Light , which is out now on Crash Symbols . The eerie vocal frustrations of Dylan Travis aka Some Ember are carefully gorged into a deep dark cave from which he sings his stories. His monumental transmissions in respect to time and space throughout his 8 track LP follows a grey-scaled color scheme that is named for a piece in Galway Kinnell's Book of Nightmares. Its on point beginning to end. 'Era of Wind' might just be one of my most favorite [...]

Vallejo beat producer, SELA. , has got a grip of new tapes filled with new sets of sounds for us to dream on to. He's been consistently putting EPs and short albums of instrumentals since last year and I just can't get enough of it. Get everything he's made up to this point over here . Highly recommend it. In the meantime, here's his, ... Or Don't EP. A combination of 5 tracks that did't make the cut or have a home on his other releases. Even if they dont fit, this may [...]

[ via ] On Portals newest feature section, "PORTALswap", the London/San Francisco project, Joseph Stallion was showcased. The band consists of two, Max Petrek and his female vocalist, Erin Ross. They teamed up with Montreal's Seapoint to fabricate an atmospheric bass churner that hits incredibly deep in all fields. 'Made Like This' lays down a set of noisy embedded samples while synths hover over it to enlighten the ever so captivating vocals of both Max and Erin. There's a sense of spatial ambiance that Seapoint brings to the track [...]

Christoph El' Truento serves up a 14 min time elapsing mind-bender. This complex ambient number makes the mind ruminate and explore the wonderful essence of different earthly tones and textures as well as their existence in this infinite universe. The track title, 'Moonjumping', halfway gives itself to a sharply airy space age ditty that releases the tension from the noise filled background just to set itself up again for more uplifting vibrations. Truly incredible. Download it off his bandcamp ... M o o n j u m p i n g by Christoph El' [...]

Seattle beat experimentalist, Tavvish , is one guy worth listening to. His most recent track, 'Once a Day', stretches out at five minutes long only to leave you feeling like it was much longer. It's down-tempo fantasy chiming loop horn, wish washes and ties all focus and thought directly towards its uplifting soul teasing melody. It's one hell of a sound on this one. Listen and download a compilation of all of Tavvish's works thus far at the link below or at his soundcloud . Tavvish - Once a Day [...]

Thundercat prepares to drop his debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse , on Brainfeeder , August 30th. Flying Lotus produced the whole album, and from the two tracks I've heard thus far, there's no doubt in my mind that this release will be an absolute hit. 'Daylight' has a glorious universe of its own, shredding bass guitar rifts and spatial soulfulness the reaches all spectrums of its sounding resonance. Thundercat - Daylight

May 9 will mark the 21st anniversary of the death of the country singer Keith Whitley, who was just about to break huge when he suddenly died. So it's appropriate to include in this instalment of The Originals his vastly superior original of the mammoth hit for the ghastly Ronan Keating. In the course of researching this series I come to learn new things. I had always thought that Big Maybelle did the original of Jerry Lee Lewis' first hit. I thought wrong. The third song featured is The Mindbender's cover of A Groovy Kind Of Love, the first original [...]

Billy Kramer with his Dakotas. Billy, I never knew ye; neither did any of my sisters. Billy Kramer & The Dakotas - "Little Children" MP3 Penny got up at 2 a.m. this morning and proceeded to stay up for FOUR, FIVE HOURS before going back to sleep. Suffice to say, I didn't [...]

I came up immersed in hip hop. I harboured, and still do, a strong bias against frivolous forms of rap music. For this reason I walked away from the genre, all together, almost a decade ago. In my experience, two Toronto MCs have been most dedicated to their cause, and would never imagine walking away. Ian Kamau and Mindbender. http://www.myspace.com/iankama u Ian Kamau is a poet, a servant of the community, and sworn humanist. His words speak of personal struggle, systemic weaknesses, and of hope, vision, beauty. [...]

I'm off to Killarney tomorrow in advance of a flight to Germany from Kerry Airport the following morning. It's my second time flying from Kerry, although it's a bit of an exaggeration to call it an airport; I've seen taxi ranks that are bigger! It's the only airport I know that's beside the road and where there's more danger of stepping on cow shit than there is of terrorism. On Wednesday, I'll be flying into Frankfurt Hahn where I'll be collected by my friend Pia who has promised to take me on a tour of the beer gardens where I'll [...]

Although the recent advent of "emo rap" (oyy, that name) might suggest otherwise, bravado remains an important arrow in any MC's lyrical quiver. The ability to convey exactly why it is you are so dope, and everyone else is not, remains as fundamental to hip hop as shelltoes and high-top fades. But is there such a thing as too much bravado? Can too much blind faith in your abilities have an adverse effect on the music you make and inhibit your growth as an MC? It would seem so. Unless you have some kind of hang up about [...]
