I guess I should have shared this when it was originally posted, but I've been too busy wasting my time on Facebook. It's number 92 of Festival City Radio . N ew releases for yesterday, November 6: Bob Trimble - "Night at the Asylum" (0:00) Jeremy Jay - " Light Beam " (5:00) Citay - " First Fantasy " (11:10) [...]
Will you be Grizzly Bear's friend too? As the year draws to a close, it becomes more and more evident that the big guns have already fired. While the number of highly anticipated new albums has dropped precipitously - just compare to a month or two ago - there's still plenty of time for the sleepers to ease on in. Grizzly Bear's EP of covers and re-interpretations and Sigur Ros' dual EPs released on one disc will be at the top of the stack for many record buyers, [...]

Fever Marlene - Red Fire - A band from Milwaukee that has a promising career ahead of them. Ham1 - I Has a Good Idea, but it Passed my Mind - Mix Violent Femmes and Cake with a southern flare and you have Ham1. Sounds tasty doesn't it. Minipop - Like I Do - They have a new album coming out next week. BUY IT!! Radiohead - All I Need - You already know how I feel about these guys. They have official signed a [...]

Here are some songs and albums that have been sticking in the queue in the past couple of weeks. Singles: Califone "Electric Fence" Califone's "Roots & Crowns" came out late last year to some good reviews. Mixing a dark, hazy ambience with some rustic melodies and a voice that sometimes sounds like Kurt Cobain, Califone have a very original sound. I went into their back catalog recently and found a set of 2 ep's put together called Sometimes Good Weather Follows [...]

Time to clean out the inbox and load up the iPod once...today's 8-track is a sampling of some of the best tunes and new band discoveries that have made their way into RFC HQ in the past couple of months. Official press scouting reports are included in the parentheses. 1. Castanets - "Sway" ( a fusion of electronica and Americana wrought from the violence and loss inherent to a nation's creation ) 2. [...]
Minipop will release their debut album A New Hope on November 6th. Fronted by Tricia Kanne, the band's dreamy pop sound is similar to Eisley. Tracks like the opener "Like I Do" and "Ask Me A... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**

Links To Soothe Hard Feelings And Square Round Circles by Alex Carnevale We always dig the future, Katherine Mangu-Ward discusses whether or not we are there : We may not have the moving sidewalks of ever-increasing speed described by Robert Heinlein in his 1940 story " The Roads Must Roll ." But we do have escalators. With Heinlein's dream of a begoggled pedestrian commuting at 100 miles an hour dancing in your head, pokey old escalators may not seem like much of a consolation. But [...]

According to various reports California, if it were an independent nation, would be the fifth largest economy in the world. A state of infinite possibilities, it has always seemed to me to be lacking in musical highlights. Since those kings of slacker rock Pavement burst out of Stockton and gave their musical genius to the world, I have found myself looking to other US states for my musical experiences. Grandaddy shone briefly for a while but states like New York (obviously), Washington, Oregon and of course Texas have provided great artists that have delighted me and the musical world. Even [...]

One down, three to go. My first full day in Austin was initially spent hanging out at the Convention Center getting my wristband situation sorted out, which it was and by early afternoon I had my wristband, camera pass, a spring in my step and tacos in my belly. First stop of the day. musically-speaking? The Mohawk, where Austinist , Gothamist and Gorilla Vs Bearist were throwing the best (and really, only) big party of the afternoon. Headlights (Champaign, IL) @ The Mohawk Patio - I thought [...]

I can't guarantee I'll be at SXSW this year, but if plans go well I'll end up going with camera in hand documenting every show we see. That being said, I figured I'd check out some of the bands I didn't know from the insanely long list of bands playing this year. Here's some that caught my fancy. Since there's so many bands, I figured I'd split them up based on the genre they give. Today I look at the pop genre. Ferraby Lionheart - A Crack in Time Let's Go Sailing - [...]

Thankfully not a return to the days of the little tykes and their tweeny takes on the hits of the day. More a delicious combo from San Francisco with a chanteuse spilling dreamy vocals the likes we haven't heard for aeons. Behind her is a rhythm section that stops short of blistering eardrums even though you know they want to. 'Precious' is the title track from their debut EP and it lives up to

After knockin' ya upside the noggin' with 35 big ones yesterday , we'll tone it down a touch. Here are ten more from bands scheduled to play at Austin's South by Southwest Festival next month. Glancing up at the Powerpopulist masthead again, I would say these tend more to the "indie" and "whatever we like" side. Not to every taste perhaps, but each had some tone, grind, hook, voice, quirk, or whoknowswhatery I somehow needed. Except for Calla and Protokoll , each was new to me (so feel free to smirk [...]
We've been lucky to catch Minipop since the first L.A. shows they did a few years ago, all the while snatching up as many of those Precious EPs as we could in prep for what we predicted to be bigger things to come. The band has been getting a bit of a buzz in recent months with this demo album they've been shopping around and so we made sure we caught the band once more before things get kinda
Poor James Bourne - like all the former Busted boys, he's keen to think that he's all grown up now. We bet he even hums "I'm a man, yes I am" as he has his morning wash. But then... Michael Jackson invites him for a sleepover . We imagine Jacko was disappointed, too, when he turned up. "He looks a lot younger in this Smash Hits poster, doesn't he?" Do you suppose Jacko stayed in to watch Channel 4's Minipops documentary last night? Tiny children [...]
