Alright. Since I saw you last, we've been blessed with a beautiful baby girl and two major surgeries that seem to have my son pointed in the right direction healthwise. It's been an insanely busy and emotionally rollercoastery time. There hasn't been much time for much music, but here are the tunes that have kept my brain sane and ears entertained (sans commentary this time around). 01 - The Answering Machine - " Another City, Another Sorry ". 02 [...]

Minisnap are essentially the legendary New Zealand band the Bats sans group leader Robert Scott. Though one of my favorite albums of 2008, Bounce Around , has not generated much hype around the interwebs. It seems that a group of middle aged kiwis lacking their principal songwriter would deserve a quiet reception, but guitarist Kaye Woodward leads the band through 12 fantastic pop songs. Lead-off track "Bounce Around" should clear those winter blues and have you shaking your hips around the living room thinking that getting older doesn't seem so bad. Watch the video then download the [...]
Photo: Flickr I meant to start back this back up last Sunday, but as you all know the site decided to throw up on itself. The plan was to include a bunch of songs carried over from last year that didn't make the cut on the song list, and just have something fun for all of you to listen to on this lazy afternoon. Listening to a lot of these, i'm questioning myself as to why I forgot about how I forgot about some of them in the first place. [...]

So here's my list of best singles, album tracks, and EPs from 2008. Unlike my Best Albums List, songs that were from a 2007 album but were released as singles in 2008 are eligible. But single reissues are not. (Which is why Friendly Fires and Pacific are absent from my list.) With the concept of the "album" diminishing in this world of digital downloads, singles are becoming more important. I'm not calling the death knell for the Album, but if groups whose music leans toward the poppy and immediate side of things wanted to just release singles or EPs every [...]

In Latin, they used to say, De gustibus non est disputandum . Roughly translated it means, I'm right and you're wrong. No really, it translates to There's no accounting for taste . Since this blog is a one person show, this list was created in a vacuum. The only debates that happened putting this list together went on inside my head, and since my tastes lean toward pop, this list reflects just that. As far as how this year compares with previous years, there wasn't one record that jumped out at me a screamed best record of the [...]
Minisnap are a side project of beloved Kiwis The Bats featuring the songs of Kaye Woodward accompanied by fellow Bats Paul Kean and Malcolm Grant along with Marcus Winstanley of The Undercurrents. The two songs below are from the Cloudberry single, "Whistler," and the excellent lp, Bounce Around, released 12 Aug. 2008 by Magic Marker Records and available at eMusic (clicky clicky). Minisnap

Minisnap's appropriately titled Bounce Around album is another one of those records that has been neglected on these pages this year, but certainly not on my stereo. I meant to write about it in March when I bought it from Rough Trade, but again I profess a lack of time and my slow writing skills as pathetic excuses. Back in March and even now I couldn't believe that Kaye Woodward had been holding back so many great songs over the years. Especially when you consider that during the 10 year break that took from [...]
