Mink Deville : That World Outside [ purchase ] I must have heard You Don't Own Me before, because I saw Dirty Dancing when it came out in the theaters. But I don't remember the song, so rediscovering it here was a pleasure indeed. Starting with that great growly sax sound, and continuing with swelling strings done right, even into the doo-wop backing vocals, Own Me was great. Many of these same musical elements can be found in the music of Mink Deville, and I offer That World Outside as an [...]

Mink DeVille : Just to Walk That Little Girl Home [ purchase ] Willy DeVille had one of the most soulful voices ever, but far too few people ever got to hear it. He formed the group Mink DeVille in 1975, and made something of a splash at CBGBs in New York City. This was good for his career at first, but in the long run, his music never should have been associated with the punk scene. That was not what he was about. The other thing that limited [...]

About the only reason why I still bother to watch awards shows is to catch the sequence of people who have died since the last show (and of late successive shows have contrived to fuck that up by going for "artistic" camera angles which don't hep the TV viewer in identifying dead people). Here is my In Memoriam section, with mix-tapes, for 2009, including only musicians, in three parts . The second will run next week, and the third early in the new year to accommodate late entries. so please don't shout at me for having failed to pick [...]

Born of the New York class of '77 punk scene, Mink DeVille stood apart from other CBGB acts by taking their cues from such varied influences as 50's soul, New Orleans funk and Cajun music, rockabilly and especially gut-bucket rhythm and blues. They had filtered out the dissonance of what would become punk rock and created a rock and soul hybrid that seamlessly blended Ben E King's Spanish Harlem, Van Morrison's Gallic soul and the New York arrogance of the Velvet Underground. In short, they sounded like on else around. They were bad-ass and sentimental, they were hard [...]

Mink DeVille was a band that, for some strange reason, never got its due. Founded by frontman and world traveler Willy DeVille , the group formed in San Francisco in 1974 before moving to DeVille's hometown of New York the next year. Mink featured a rotating cast of backing musicians, but Willy was always the band's driving force, pushing its music toward an almost wholly unique brand of romantic punk. The critics loved their records - especially Mink's 1977 debut Cabretta and 1980's Le Chat Bleu - but the band failed to achieve [...]

MUSIC NEWS - Willy Deville , 58, founder of one punk music's legendary bands, MINK DEVILLE died on August 6 at NYC's Cabrini Hospital after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Mink DeVille , much better known in Europe than in the USA, started on the New York club scene (CBGBs, etc) in the '70s. The band was considered by many to be one of the most original groups in the punk genre for its mixture of R&B, blues, Dixieland and traditional French Cajun ballads. He moved to New [...]
Willy DeVille, founde of Mink DeVille, has died from pancreatic cancer. Although the band which bore his made-up name might be his most visible memorial, DeVille created more than just punk in his career. After the band ended in 1985, he went solo and explored a range of genres, including Zydeco and cajun ballads. His work on the soundtrack of The Princess Bride won him an Oscar nomination in 1987. Mink DeVille formed in 1974, getting a slot as house band at CBGBs shortly after Billy Borsay had changed his name to Willy DeVille. [...]

This is Mink DeVille from 1982. His guitar player on this tour was none other than Toronto's own Paul James.
Mink DeVille (1974–1985) was a rock band known for its association with early punk rock bands at New York's CBGB nightclub and for being a showcase for the music of Willy DeVille. The band recorded six albums in the years 1977 to 1985. Except for frontman Willy DeVille, the original members of the band played only on the first two albums (Cabretta and Return to Magenta).
