Every Saturday we take a look at some quality funk, soul and disco here at the Labs. Wether it be old or new, we're digging it and feel the need to share. This week it's Minnie Riperton with the brilliant "Adventures in Paradise" . Known to most for her 1975 single "Lovin You" , she was one of the decades finest vocalists and for me, this is maybe her finest moment - the title track from album "Adventures in Paradise". Minnie Riperton - Adventures in Paradise [...]
This track was slaughtered in the 902s by Jean Jacques Smoothie who had a relatively large success from a relatively simplistic example of sample based house music. Although Cam hasn't taken a complicated approach or tried to change it into something original, he has kept the original in tact and perhaps removed those parts that weren't quite necessary. Late Nite Tuff Guy is one of the most underrated producers in Australia and if not the world, whether it be his reworks or originals they are as close to perfection on a club sound system and [...]
Tweet Last night this writer took to the decks at a party for the first time in 11 years. Hilarity ensued, mainly due to the fact that everything in the DJ booth moved if you touched it. Actually, if you touched one thing, a record for example, everything in the booth moved with it. Any thoughts of a smooth mix-out went out of the window straight away, but luckily the main thing is great music. I hope so anyway. Re-discovered last night: this delightful [...]
Well after another long hiatus from 'DROP ON A CLASSIC' I have returned my deepest apologies I have had a lot going on of late so sorting things out has been hard. But its not about me its about showcasing this great music and the story behind it. So this time we got Charizma and Peanut butter Wolf. These two guys are one of my favorite musical duos of all time and I feel they deserve my respect massively for getting me through so many tough times and great times with their crackin music. So here comes the breakdown but [...]
The story goes that Jim Morrison hated Light My Fire, The Doors' great breakthrough hit. Recorded in August 1966, it was released in January 1967, at the dawn of the so-called Summer of Love. If it was true that Morrison disliked it, I'd sort of concur with his judgment. In fact, he didn't hate the song, but resented that he had only a small part in writing his band's signature hit (most of it was written by guitarist Robby Krieger). I don't like The Doors much, and have more respect than affection for their version of Light My [...]
Christmas got funky, Christmas got soul! The analytical eagle-eyed reader may have deduced, by astute observation of the post's title, that this year's Christmas mix is dominated by soul music, and that there will be at least one more compilation. Indeed, there will be at least a second mix of Christmas soul tracks from the heyday of the genre – the 1960s and '70s. I have held back a few cracking numbers anyway. Still, this is a really great bunch of songs. Whoever I got the utterly gorgeous opening track from, I am particularly grateful to. The Flirtations, one of [...]
I was a huge fan of 4 Hero's early jungle and breakbeat work but personally wasn't hugely taken with their smoother/jazzier material. This track however jumps out from their 2001 "Creating Patterns" album and never fails to bring a smile to my face and a lump to my throat. Minnie Riperton of course was the first to record the track, and as timeless as it is, I could never get enough of 4 Hero's cover and Carina Andersson's brilliant vocal. Adding their unique polish and upping the epic [...]
I've written many times about musical performers who died before they could enjoy the kind of long career that their talent deserved. In a lot of cases their own self-destructive behavior led to a tragic end, but some were brought down by fate. The incredible voice of Minnie Riperton was stilled at just age 31 by cancer. A singer with five-octave range who even considered opera at one time, Riperton topped the charts in 1975 with her unforgettable ballad "Lovin' You." It made her an international star, but even though she kept working for the next few [...]
The third Covered In Soul compilation may draw from the most eclectic original material yet. So in the space of four songs we move from Grateful Dead favourite Casey Jones via The Beatles to a Barry Manilow song and a Roy Orbison song reinvented by Al Green. A couple of show tunes get the soul treatment. Sammy Davis Jr's wonderful I've Gotta Be Me is lovely in Vivian Reed's hands, while I would regard the Supremes and Temptations collaboration on The Impossible Dream more as a curiosity (hence its position as a postscript). The previous two mixes featured [...]
As a young girl, she studied music, drama, and dance at the city's Lincoln Center and later contemplated a career in opera. Her pop career began in 1963 when she joined the local girl group called The Gems (not to be confused with the 60s New York-based girl group Gems, led by Louise Bethune), who were also known at times as The Starlets (1963-1966), signing to the famed Chess label to release a handful of singles as well as lend backing vocals to acts including Fontella Bass, The Dells, and Etta James. In honor of Nas' Born Day today, I'm using him as an excuse to post a few of my favorite samples. I decided to steer clear of the seven second loops. Instead, I picked the joints you can let ride in your speakers, the ones that can stand alone without the stamp of being "sampled." By the way if you care, Nas turns 36 today. Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack "Born To Love" used for Nas' "2nd Childhood" - Yes, this is the [...]

Perhaps my infatuation with the new explains the overwhelming amount of contemporary songs I've been posting lately. But am I to blame? The new Royksopp and Phoenix albums are certainly worth the attention; Animal Collective, Bat for Lashes, Bishop Allen, Grizzly Bear, etc, I mean 2009 in general has been full of great brand spankin' new music. Well, I figured it was time to balance things out for a change and take it back to 1975, because it's either great brand new or classic vintage in my book. With all that said, [...]
Minnie Riperton had a short but very esteemed career in music. In her teens Riperton was the lead singer of a band The Gems and was affiliated early on with Chess Records. Riperton is likely best remembered for her song "Loving You" where her five and a half octave vocal stylings were highlighted. In this track, "Young, Willing and Able", a more funky side of Minnie is expressed. This song, released in 1977 on Epic, was produced by Freddie Perren who was known for producing two tracks on the Saturday Night Fever album, "I will Survive/Substitute"(produced [...]

Saturdays with Tim Buckley and Minnie Ripperton
Tim Buckley "Dolphins" (Old Grey Whistle Test May '74) Minnie Riperton "Loving You" A couple Saturday afternoon treats to get you into the night. "Dolphins" can be inserted before or after "Loving You," depending on predicted outcome.
