The internet connection vicariously cabled into my shire hovel may have given out on me yesterday, leaving me stranded in what is effectively the '80s, but I have journeyed across town to source a reliable vein in order to update this oh-so-well-respected source of new electronic music (phew). The update in question pertains to a rather spiffing collaboration between Jack Sparrow, Ruckspin and another Leeds head, Quantum Soul. You may recall Spaz and Ruckz, as I often call them, recently released a rather delectable album as duo Author , so it's fairly standard to assume whatever they throw in [...]
Every program on WFMU is a unique mixture of loam and silt, manure and peat, each lovingly tended to to bring the finest harvest of ephemera, flotsam and mixed metaphor that can be guaranteed. In this installment Kurt Gottschalk explains what makes his garden grow. It's not like I don't have enough to do. I mean, I'd love to say my show flows like freestyle rhymes from the soul of some hookah smoking caterpillar or something, but it just isn't like that. I watch the DJs who have gone before me and admire the ease with [...]
With the untimely demise of Ignition Festival meaning that Newcastle's wait for a national recognised music festival continues, you'd be forgiven for thinking that there is simply not the market for live gigs in the North East. However, having lived in Newcastle for the best part of nineteen years, I can confirm that this is certainly not the case, and September's Month Of Fridays is destined to reiterate my beliefs. Founded by a group of like minded, music loving companions, including radio presenters, musicians and event promoters, Month of Fridays is a realistic yet innovative event, set to [...]

Love it or hate it, XOYO is the venue du jour at the moment, and tonight it plays host to splicer-and-dicer du jour , Gold Panda . First, Seams takes to the stage in front of just a handful of people - but the early birds more than make up for a lack of numbers, creating a cosy little huddle in front of the stage. The man also known as James Welch deftly blends traditional song structures and electronica to make his music instantly listenable. He chucks in the odd complex cross rhythm to [...]

by teepoo I love it when the perfect song turns on and wakes you up in the morning. Today it was Nathan Lawr and the Minotaurs . How could you not fall in love with a track from a band that consists of members from some of the most musically creative Canadian bands like Holy Fuck and Rheostatics? Get Down is a brass filled track off their latest release Get Down which you can grab on Bandcamp . Minotaurs- Get [...]

Matthew Kratz, known in the EDM community as Kraddy , is an impressive solo breakaway from popular dub/glitch hop group Glitch Mob. His new EP Labryinth shows off some impressive talent from this Mobster. Hands down, the most notable track on the EP would have to be Into The Labryinth . It's a dark, twisted tune that delivers with an evenly balanced rhythm. The track keeps surprising the listener drop after drop, as layers of pure filth and grime build up. Kraddy also shows off his versatility with Let Go [...]

Myspace Toronto's venerable Wavelength might have closed out their weekly showcase series last year in favour of intermittent events throughout the year, but they've not given up their tradition of throwing a killer birthday party or five. As they've done in years past, Wavelength Eleven (or event #415 if you're keeping track) will commandeer venues around this city from February 16 through 20 and fill them with many of the finest acts the city and outlying regions have to offer, spanning all styles and genres, frequently on the same bill. [...]

On with the show. To be fair, I would bet there are records that should have been in the Top 30 that slipped outside so I could give some shine to bands I love that are making big strides, but from twenty to number one, we have heavy hitters and top shelf efforts. So sit back and enjoy. 11:: Pat Jordache - Future Songs This one is for me. I love this record, walked around Toronto in [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Sitting at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern, musician Nathan Lawr (Royal City, Feist , Jim Guthrie ) has a lot on his proverbial plate. Aside from doing research to complete a university degree, Lawr is also the rock equivalent of a baseball manager, getting the large collective known as Minotaurs together to play. "I'm having fun getting onstage with 10 other guys," Lawr tells Spinner, while nursing [...]

by teepoo The Minotaurs aka Nathan Lawr and the Minotaurs is from Guelph Ontario. Despite the Minotaur reference to a scary mythical monster, there's nothing scary about their music. They are a sort of alternative pop with a little bit of jazz and afrobeat rhythms and flare mixed in. Take a listen to a crowd favorite called Caught in the Light . For long time percussionist Nathan Lawr , the decision to experiment with afrobeat rhythms isn't that surprising, but the innovative way he and his all-star band fuse indie rock into the political charged African sounds certainly is. In a time where artists have picked the traditional sounds of the Mother Land - no Kish, not Japan in this case - as dry as the soil, Lawr's journey never finds him losing his own, unique voice or resorting to upheaval and forced calls to action. The Thing succeeds because Lawr and [...]
The Clientele offer more of their dreamy brand of Brit-pop with their latest mini-album. Pop music - Music - Arts - Reviews - Personal Archives

Filed under: Exclusive , Northern Exposure , Canada Indie-music fans are likely more familiar with Ontario musician Nathan Lawr from his time with late, lamented Guelph band Royal City and as a sideman with King Cobb Steelie and the Constantines , than through his solo material. One could argue Lawr has been the epitome of the underrated artist, humble to a fault with his own music while toiling away behind the scenes the rest of the time. [...]

A little over a year ago, Clientele leader Alasdair MacLean stirred up unrest in the hearts of his fans by dropping hints to the effect that the British band's autumn '09 album, Bonfires on the Heath , just might be their swan song. However, Clientele lovers everywhere can now breathe a sigh of relief, as a new release and a string of shows would seem to indicate the continuing good health of the U.K. psych-poppers. Less than a year after the unveiling of Bonfires , The Clientele will drop an eight-song mini-album, Minotaur (not [...]

As far as British twee-pop goes, The Clientele have long been one of the best at what they do. The Brits are continuing what they do best this summer and returning with a new mini-album of pop goodness entitled Minotaur . The new short album from Merge will feature 8 new songs and hit stores on August 31st. Below you'll find new track from the band "Jerry". Download: The Clientele - Jerry [MP3]
