Toronto - English folk band Noah and the Whale has long been on my radar, but much like a completely different American band - Minus The Bear , I had neglected to pay attention to them simply because I am not a big fan of their band name. I know, that is either incredibly shallow or stupid, but when you get bombarded with hundreds of emails a day about bands, you have to make some sort of distinctions. Fast forward to June, 2011. I download purchase this NOW! compilation in order to get myself acquainted [...]

"Midnight on the beach in the Mediterranean…" Okay, so I'm not near the Mediterranean Sea, or even the Caribbean Sea for that matter. However, I am at the North Atlantic Ocean spending my sister's 22nd birthday with her and our 15 year old sister in Puerto Rico for the week. Such dedication seeps from my pores for this segment that I'm writing this from beautiful San Juan. Okay so anyways, today's Meera's Music Monday Madness song is Minus the Bear's Pachuca Sunrise. The instrumentals, the pitches, and the lyrics all fit so well. [...]

Over the course of its five-day run -- which wrapped up on Sunday, June 26 -- Sled Island transformed the Alberta city [...]

Grab some tissues, because your ears are about to blow a load. I am pleased to present to you The Indie Sabbath -back in full force- more refreshing than an ice-cold soda in the middle of the desert. It's been 4 long weeks for me down in Joplin, MO. Yes, my work there took away from the Sabbath and my contributions to Earmilk in general- but if I could go back and do it all again I wouldn't change a thing. Music doesn't go away- if you keep your ears open it will find you. For me, music is the [...]

Wakarusa is still working out the kinks. That makes sense though. There's a growing demand for this festival, so figuring out how to make a limited space – mountain tops are only so big – work with more people is going to be a challenge. For starters, organizers once again tweaked the festival grounds for easier flow from the main stage to the other tents. They also made the main stage a part of the late night Interstellar Meltdown, calling it the Interstellar Sanctum. This meant the bigger electronic acts didn't have to be crammed into a tent. It [...]

We saw that look in your eye... you're looking for something free for the weekend. Well lady luck just smiled on you because Minus The Bear are releasing their latest Hold Me Down EP for free! The EP doesn't feature too much in terms of new material other than the title-track "Hold Me Down" but its worth grabbing. Afterall, it is... free. "Broken China" was already released as a single in 2009, but the rest is pure fun, featuring two live songs and one remix by MitchMix . If you're a big Minus [...]

The 2011 lineup for Seattle's Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival , which takes place September 3-5th at the Seattle Center, has finally arrived. With 10 years in existence, Minus the Bear have outlasted many peers to release five albums and play alongside fellow Seattle icons Soundgarden and Foo Fighters. They've also been around long enough to witness change in the music industry, from torrenting and losing hard-earned money, to raking in the dough with the assistance of one iPod commercial. The band released their fifth full-length, OMNI , last year, which diverted from their usual sound and took a more polished approach to songwriting. Longtime fans were thrown for a loop, though in the meantime the band pumped out [...]

There is nothing i enjoy more than meeting up with friends at dusk and heading out on a late night drive through the country. Conversations are better, time feels like it doesn't exist, the world feels like it's full of possibilities, and the stress of day to day monotony are forgotten completely. It's the only place i truly feel free, where i finally believe that anything can happen, where my friends and I strip away all pretensions and feel truly alive. Before heading out there are a few necessities that must never be overlooked; Redbull (or your choice [...]

One year ago, the future of the Hangout Music Festival was far from certain. The concept was definitely intriguing: a three day, multi-genre music festival on the beach in Gulf Shore, AL, with high production values and big name talent. The festival only drew about 15,000 people in its first year, though, a number that was well short of the 35,000 capacity. Attendance might have been affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that hit the Gulf of Mexico less than a month before the festival started, but that couldn't have been the sole reason why [...]

Sound&Shape have been around since 2005 and pride themselves on bringing rock and roll back to the masses. Touring extensively in 2006, the band played 230+ shows across the US, only to tally another 180 in 2007 and 150 in 2008. Its fantastic to see a group that works so hard to finally get a record deal, which they did by signing with an US/UK independent label, Engineer Records who focus on the Punk, Hardcore and Emo genres. S&S' highly-acclaimed album The Love Electric was released in 2009, and who couldn't love a group that [...]
