I was going to forgo actually writing a traditional (or traditional-like) review of the new Mircale Fortress album Was I The Wave? and try my hand at a short story that would somehow encapsulate my feelings about the record, à la Said The Gramophone . It turns out that's not so easy to do. Not because the album doesn't lend itself to interpretation and beautiful imagery (it does), but because I am a terrible writer. For real. Graham Van Pelt (for he is Miracle Fortress) deserves better than my [...]

Andre Guerette I have a confession to make; I lied to you. Or more accurately, I misled you. When I wrote up Miracle Fortress' performance at Canadian Musicfest last month , I made it out that I was as in the dark about what Graham Van Pelt had in store for album number two as most everyone else, and that my insights were based entirely on the show. This was not true. In fact, I'd gotten advanced a copy of Was I The Wave? a week [...]
Montreal producer Miracle Fortress (aka Graham Van Pelt) has announced a N. American tour with Junior Boys in support of his anticipated sophomore album, Was I The Wave? out May 17th on Secret City... **Summary** Go to website for downloads, videos & more.

Frank Yang Relative to most of the people seeing any part of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's three-day, four-show residency at Lee's Palace this past weekend, for which I hit up the Saturday night performance, I didn't want to be there at all. I did, of course, but that was nothing compared to the anticipation so many had for the Montreal post-rock forebears' first shows here in eight years, part of their surprise return to active duty - touring, at least - announced last Spring. I just missed out on Godspeed the first time [...]

Joseph Yarmush It's almost certainly too much to read an excess of meaning into the title of Malajube's last albums, but when you've only got a (very) rudimentary working knowledge of the French language, you do what you can do. That said, there's something to the fact that 20092s Labyrinthes was as dark and dense as the title implied - at least relative to the almost giddily carefree nature of 20062s Trompe L'Oeil ("deceive the eye" in English, if you were wondering) - [...]

by teepoo Miracle Fortress will release their new album Was I the Wave? on April 26th. Although electronic, it is an emotionally inspired piece of work that lead you to think one way but end up another. For example in Raw Spectable you keep expecting it to break out into a full out dance track, but it sort of just dissipates and disappears, leaving you in a dreamy world of synths and muffled vocals. Miracle Fortress- Raw Spectacle [...]

Three years ago when I was at M for Montreal, I had a chat with two Dutch journalists about what bands they should be most excited to see that weekend. Oddly enough, in the span of a few months, the three bands I suggested (The RAA, The Luyas and now Miracle Fortress ) have all released records that the masses have or will embrace. The funny thing is, I went on and on about Graham's deserted island album , Five Roses , and how easily he created sunshine kissed [...]
It's been awhile since we've heard anything from Graham Van Pelt under his Miracle Fortress moniker. The last time was way back in 2007 on the Polaris Prize shortlisted Five Roses , and since then it seemed as if the project might have been abandoned, with Van Pelt opting to concentrate on his other band, Think About Life, instead. But it seems that Van Pelt isn't the kind of artist that can be tied to any one project. Miracle Fortress is set to release their sophomore LP, Was I The Wave? , on April 26 via Secret City, and [...]

This part weekend I had an chance to check out "Raw Spectacle", the first sounds from Mircale Fortress ' Was I The Wave? , the follow-up to their Polaris Prize short-listed Five Roses LP from 2007. It's been awhile since Graham Van Pelt released anything under the Miracle Fortress moniker, and I was starting to think that maybe this project was dead in the water, choosing to focus on his work with Think About Life instead. van Pelt is the kind of musician that can't be easily confined by any [...]

Miracle Fortress 's new album, Was I the Wave? , is a total banger. I mean that in terms of quality, not tone, since it's actually got a lot of spacey, ambient moments. This includes "Raw Spectacle," a six-minute swirl of blissful synths and ascendent vocals. It frequently feels like it's about to explode into a full-blown dance track, but it mostly just simmers.

I was waiting for this press release! Montreal-based musician and producer Miracle Fortress (aka Graham Van Pelt) is set to release of his sophomore album Was I The Wave? on May 17th via Secret City Records . Wearing all of the hats (composer, arranger, producer, and engineer), Van Pelt is to show us his electronic side with an album that 'expresses themes of alienation, anonymity, and the desire for intimacy, with the first side keeping a deliberately crowded atmosphere, and the second side more open and personal'. Pre-order the record from his website and get an instant download [...]

A new Miracle Fortress single has just sprung out. It's been a long time for Graham Van Pelt's moniker band to release something new! Raw Spectacle is very different from the Five Roses era. More of epic techno synth dance track. Anyways his new record coming out on April 26th (Canada on Secret City Records ) called Was I the Wave? Have a listen to Raw Spectacle .

Canvas Media There's records that you hear and, regardless of how you personally feel about them, you know that they will be a big thing, that their contents will resonate with the masses and will prove to be game-changers for the artist who created it. Timber Timbre's 2009 self-titled album was not one of these, or at least I didn't hear it. Building swampy textures and tempos around Taylor Kirk's low, drawling Randy Newman-ish vocals, it didn't seem the sort of record with a lot of crossover appeal and yet it did [...]

New LP from Miracle Fortress Coming Soon It's been nearly 4 years since Miracle Fortress released any new music. In 2007, Five Roses transported listeners into soloist Graham Van Pelt's fairytale dreams, and by the end of the record, it managed to make us all feel a little happier inside. But in the process of writing a sophomore release (as well as supporting his other musical vehicle Think About Life ), GVP seemed to quietly disappear. His tumblr account has been occasionally updated [...]

Back in Vancouver for a few days now. I have almost recovered. Slept for 12hours last night. Think i'm getting sick. I miss Austin, drinking all day, sleeping little and most of all "being shitty" which we decided the upside down peace sign is the international symbol for. Spread the good word. Apologies to anyone who wasn't at SXSW that I pissed off with my drunk tweets . Thank god, I had my camera and my twitter account or I would have no idea what happened. Without further adoo-doo. [...]
