If you're a fan of 80s jangle pop/rock you've probably heard Mark Mulcahy' s music. If you've ever seen an episode of The Adventures of Pete & Pete , then you definitely have. Mulcahy began his career as lead singer and co-founding member of New Haven, CT's Miracle Legion . Mulcahy and guitarist Ray Neal, with whom he formed the core of the group, quickly developed a solidly unique and interesting sound, writing some of the most personal and passionate music in early alternative rock. Unfortunately, not many people outside of critics, college radio aficionados and a [...]
The musical community rushes to the aid of one of their own, resulting in a revelatory all-cover album.

by Bill Pearis We haven't had a new album from onetime Miracle Legion and Polaris frontman Mark Mulcahy since 2005's In Pursuit of Your Happiness (one of my favorites of that year ). (He unfortunately had to deal with some personal tragedies .) That is too long to be away from one of the great voices in music. That will change next month when the singer releases Dear Mark J Mulcahy I Love You [...]
It's been eight years since singer-songwriter Mark Mulcahy, once the front man for the incredible Eighties college radio darlings Miracle Legion, has released a new album. Miracle Legion's 1984 six song independent release, The Backyard, remains a timeless classic of jangly college radio rock that drew comparisons to R.E.M. Subsequent album releases on indie and ... 5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let’s get weird. Words by Chris If you’re that broken-hearted misfit living in a former bungalow of love off of Butler, wading through snow as the days pass you by, you of all people know the potential healing power of music. However, some “break-up songs” seem to just wallow in self-loathing or [...]

Sometimes, nostalgia turns out to be a very good thing. A long time ago, The Adventures of Pete & Pete was a totally awesome show. And after watching it again just this afternoon, it turns out it's still totally awesome and a lot deeper in the musically awesome department than we realized at age eight (and we're not just talking the theme music). When discussing the music of Pete & Pete , it all starts with Polaris. The wonderfully '90s theme song "Hey Sandy" was penned by Mark Mulcahy, originally the frontman for Miracle Legion [...]
MP3 Although we haven't heard much from Surfer Blood regarding plans for a new album, the Florida power pop outfit has been keeping busy since the release of its debut, Astro Coast , last year. This past weekend, the group brought their sunny guitar leads and melodies to Denmark for the Roskilde Festival, and a few days before, they dropped this fresh new cover song for fans. "Hey Sandy" was originally written and recorded by Polaris, a short-lived project that included members of New Haven, Connecticut's Miracle Legion, a great band [...]

One of the major surprises of the 2010 holiday season was the remastered, digital release of Miracle Legion’s 1987 full-length debut, Surprise Surprise Surprise . Despite the buzz created by comparisons to early R.E.M. and rising popularity on ‘80s college radio, the now-defunct band never managed to become a household name. However, through lead singer Mark Mulcahy ’s acclaimed solo work and modern-day time capsules like YouTube, the band has managed to maintain a loyal legion of fans, and growing numbers of listeners continue to serendipitously stumble upon Miracle Legion’s music online and get transported 20 [...]
This band was so good for several albums straight. Check out some merchandise . http://mezzotint.com/store.htm l#miraclelegion
Not to be confused with the slow teen anthem of the late 90's, "Sex and Candy," here's a lazy little tune about going down to your local corner store and hanging out with friends and eating snacks together. Wonder what kind of snacks they're munching on. I would wager it's something between gushers, bugles, and those frosted honey-buns flavored with high-fructose corn syrup. Oh, life on the corner - it's so carefree! Except when there's that thug with a gun. And somebody just got punched! Sweet Lord, is that a dead guy on the [...]

Kort na elkaar verschijnen twee interessante tributes. Het eerste is Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs Of Mark Mulcahy .

Covers albums are always a tricky proposition. Even with artists I like, I find that covers come off as one of two things – either they hew too close to the original and lack any definitive point on their own, or else they play much too fast and loose in their interpretation of a classic song. In either case, they’re often treated as a bit disposable, merely quickly recorded, poorly thought out b-sides or cash grabs. It seems like a lose-lose proposition. Do you want to be the artist who ruins a classic or the one who makes a completely [...]
Two of the songs Thom Yorke alluded to several weeks ago on Radiohead's deadairspace blog have been leaked. The video for his Miracle Legion cover, "All For The Best" is also available now. Little Thom Yorke has been a busy bee of late, what with him and his mates playing Reading and the announcement that he'll release two brand new solo singles tomorrow, one called 'FeelingPulledApartByHorses' and the other 'The Hollow Earth'. Exciting. He's also contributed a track to the new Twilight film (details of which are due to be announced very soon) and there's also this track, 'All For The Best'. This cover is part of a benefit CD for Mark Mulcahy, who is the frontman with cult American band Miracle Legion . The CD will help raise funds [...]

A couple month's ago Thom Yorke premiered his cover of Mark Mulcahy 's (former frontman for Miracle Legion and Polaris ) single "All for the Best" for Mulcahy's tribute album Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy . Today Rolling Stone premiered Melinda Tupling directed video of the cover, which, not surprisingly, doesn't actually feature the Radiohead frontman. Check out the video here . [...]

A little over a week ago, I heard a great, new Thom Yorke track on the radio. The song Yorke's version of Miracle Legion's "All For The Best" that he recorded and contributed to the album Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy . The album is a tribute to Mark Mulcahy who lost his wife 1 year prior to the album's release date, September 2009. Check out the original if you haven't heard it. It's a great track and Thom Yorke did an impressively distinctive cover of it. MP3 : [...]
