via K. of Escape Sounds A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about Miracles of Modern Science , a band that I barely caught at a show, but they've become one of my current obsessions. Last night, I made my way to Glasslands Gallery , a space with a bizarre paper-mache backdrop, to check them out properly. Right before the MOMS set, a huge crowd of people came into the venue and crowded around the front of the stage. Unsurprisingly, there were a lot of Princeton alums/students [...]

via brooklynvegan Over a week ago, my friend convinced me at the last minute to check out Parenthetical Girls and Evangelicals at Cake Shop. Good thing I did, otherwise I wouldn't have discovered Miracles of Modern Science . A six-piece from Brooklyn and Princeton, Miracles of Modern Science describes itself as an "orchestral space-pop" band that uses classical instruments (mandolin, double bass, violin, cello) to drive their sound. I'm not really sure what space-pop is supposed to be, but they do wear spacesuits when [...]

Orchestral space-pop is how Josh Hirshfeld (mandolin, vocals), Evan Younger (double bass, lead vocals), Kieran Ledwidge (violin), Geoff McDonald (cello), Tyler Pines (drums), and Tina Kim (cello) describe the music they have been creating since 2005 after meeting at Princeton University (Kim was picked up in 2007). The name for their band, Miracles of Modern Science , is even more fitting given their self description and onstage outfits. While space pop is up for debate, the orchestral part is not. This six-piece has chosen to push aside the usual presence of guitars and bass as the standard [...]
MP3: Tim Young Band - Kerouac MP3: Bakers At Dawn - Endless MP3: Bakers At Dawn - Hopeful MP3: Centro-Matic - I, The Kite MP3: Miracles [...]

Starting off with an old favorite. Okkervil River , who featured on A Free Man's Top 10 last year is back next week with their fifth full length record, "The Stand Ins". I've heard a bit of it and it sounds as good or better than last year's gem "The Stage Names". If you've not heard these Texas troubadours, the time is now. Preorder "The Stand Ins" from Jagjaguwar for an early download and cover art poster. MP3: Okkervil River - "Lost Coastlines" Mash-ups and remixes are [...]

Miracles of Modern Science are a six-piece band currently based in Brooklyn who play - according to the email 100b received a few weeks ago - 'orchestral space-pop'. Which, honestly, sounds exactly like the kind of thing I would hate. Luckily I checked them out anyway, and was pleasantly surprised to find that 'space-pop' isn't the weird experimental nonsense I expected it to be. As it turns out, the email description is quite literal. Miracles of Modern Science (MOMS) have no use for guitars or any of those crazy new-fangled contraptions - they've stuck to violins, cellos, and [...]

Ready for the four hippest bands this fall? Instant cred, go! The Band: Miracles of Modern Science The Single: MR2 Miracles of Modern Science (or M.O.M.S) might look on first appearance like just another space-rock bluegrass band. But actually, they play really fucking catchy pop songs that call to mind vintage Andrew Bird or Final Fantasy. [...]

Miracles of Modern Science is a Brooklyn based futuristic chamber pop/rock band, complete with shiny silver suits, double bass, mandolin, violin, cello and of course drums. This isn't a quintet of scholars digging out their old instruments, this band has some rocking tunes. Fans of the Arcade Fire and Final Fantasy will like this, I'm pretty sure. morning, fine people. as a guy that used to write press releases for a living for 8/9 years i always assumed that my releases were going unread and always wondered why i even put so much effort into em. it was really because my clients felt that their respective "news" was so fuckin awesome that they deemed wordy/over the top press release necessary. now that i am on the other side of the table, i know that press releases are pretty much pointless cause i dont read em. as stated many times before i look for keywords, which brings me [...]

The Miracles of Modern Science or MOMS formed three years ago at Princeton, and now live in Brooklyn. They play orchestral space-pop, combining the epic scale of post-rock with a pop sensibility, using mandolin and strings as the driving force behind the music. We have some advance tracks from their upcoming debut EP which is out at the end of the summer: Miracles of Modern Science - Eating Me Alive Miracles of Modern Science - MR2

In their metallic space-age suits, Miracles of Modern Science look like a band sent from the future (or at least a 1950s view of the year 3000) to save the world from all the dull, identikit bands that appear to have taken over. Despite their almost extraterrestial appearance, they have a very earthly sense of what makes excellent music - big choruses, catchy hooks and songs that make your heart swell. Although quite difficult to pin down musically (they describe it themselves as "A bluegrass band sent into outer space in a giant [...]

M.O.M.s have just put out a new single and a new mix of an oldie. Enjoy it! And believe me everyone, there's an exciting explanation on the way for the lack of updates. It rhymes with Eckard Fable. Audio: Eating Me Alive Audio: MR2

the miracles of modern science , whose demo "eating me alive" showed up in our inbox recently, describe their music as something of a simultaneous combination of futuristic pop, antebellum balladry and sea shanty sing-along, and since they would know better than we let's run with that. whatever you (or they) call it, there is, on "eating me alive" at least, an undeniable appeal to the sound - created through the teamwork of violin, cello, mandolin, stand up bass & drums - and a cheeky sense of fun that includes, certainly, but also extends to more than just the wacky [...]
