In my recent (or like years long) haze of dance music I somehow completely missed the 2009 release from one of my past faves, Mirah . At the beginning of the 00's Mirah released her first full length album of charming, honest and generally great songs on K Records. "You Think It's Like This But Really It's Like This" featured songs that perfectly captured lo-fi love, both friendly and otherwise, and a glimpse of a loving community. Over the years we've gotten more love songs and war songs and collaborations and even remixes, all more or less charming, honest [...]

Continuing the list of the best (read: my favorite) albums of the year: ( Previous ) (Next) 40: Del orean - Ayrton Senna (EP) Spanish dance-rockers Delorean are another group I don't know much about, but this EP, Ayrton Senna , is fantastic. Smooth beats, shimmering guitars, and more hooks than you can count make this an easy choice for this list despite its fairly brief length. ( More [...]
AON's Bite Sized series features exclusive performances and clips of live sets shot at Comet Ping Pong. Featuring a combination of touring bands and local talent, our hope is that this series helps to give you a taste of what goes on at a venue on the rise in the District. I've long been a fan [...]
If it's December at You Ain't No Picasso, then it's time for Mixmas! Every year I like to turn YANP over to some of my favorite bands to showcase some of their favorite songs through a themed mix. They pick a theme, five songs that fit the theme and then share a little about why [...]
Guest list of the decade's best albums prepared by Lucy Michelle of Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles.

Back at eating/sf , Kasey has prepared her review of the various vendors who helped make our wedding perfect for us. Here at Musical Pairings, I'm kinda taking today's post in a slightly different direction. I'm sharing Musical Pairings @ eating/sf's October Mix. Nonetheless, before we get to the mix, I did want to mention the DJ who absolutely rocked it at our wedding: DJ Crimson . We gave him a partial playlist of music that we liked and he filled in the gaps. He figured out which tracks would work and which [...]

Folk-pop songstress Mirah played a stripped down set to a packed house at Schubas on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009. The night belonged to Mirah's latest release, (a)spera , which was played nearly in its entirety. Mirah sprinkled a few older songs into the set such as "Jerusalem" and "We're Both So Sorry" from 2004's C'mon Miracle and "Cold, Cold Water" from 2001's Advisory Committee . Mirah's jolly and quirky demeanor quickly won over the audience with jokes about absorbing opening act Norfolk and Western [...]

Greg Jamie (frontman of O'Death) has announced a new band called Blood Warrior , which teams Jamie with Joey Weiss (Super Monster), Kristin Kellas, and Rubin Berger (Musee Mecanique, Laura Gibson, Mirah). Part of me actually loves the deceivingly metal-sounding band names this guy gives his acts. Apparently, the debut album from Blood Warrior has recently been finished (no word on an official release date as of yet other than "winter"), but that doesn't mean that the band is just going to sit around and patiently wait. No, they've got a 7" out on November 3rd via Ernest Jenning [...]

Marcel Schlattmann - Golden Coins (2007) Mirah - Generosity (mp3): A song as a glass half empty. Plastic and neglected and refilled with water to sober up.

Holy Weekend Diversions, Batman! This weekend is stacked! We present you previews for seven, count 'em, seven sweet Chicago shows as the sky turns to grey and autumn descends upon our fair, Olympicless city. Also, you'll probably read more about this before the day is through, but just a reminder that Loud Loop Radio will once again grace the intertubes tomorrow, Saturday, October 3, at 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. CST on Radio DePaul . It's going to be awesome! Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program... [...]

"Sabotage! I don't like it! I don't like this sabotage. I don't like it . Day Three: Having dinner at my favorite Indian restaurant in Tacoma a few months ago, a friend and I were bopping at the table to what sounded like Celtic beats with Punjabi lyrics. We were informed that the restaurant had just purchased the Delhi 2 Dublin CD that day and were trying it out. I didn't sit still for the rest of dinner. I was stoked to see them on the Bumbershoot lineup this year and it was by far the best show of my weekend. Reaping the benefits of a temporary downpour, [...]
OK. Its almost two weeks past Bumbershoot; but I still need to finish my tale of sorrow, and redemption. I need to ensure that no one else makes the same mistakes (not that you would). . Muddy MONDAY [aka Black Eyed Please get off the stage]: . I woke up late; exhausted from Sunday. Smarter today; I grabbed an umbrella and waterproof boots. I arrived at the comedy tent (too late to grab any tickets) and I hadn't planned a damn thing. I decided to just make random choices and [...]

Monday of Bumbershoot: I would have been completely happy with two days, but no - Seattle handed me a third to enjoy. All the music, the rain, the moshing, and everything else that came with the biggest gathering of music in Seattle over Labor Day weekend could not have been the same without the thousands of people there to enjoy it all. Monday started quite differently than the previous two days. I couldn't find parking anywhere, but determined as I was, I drove around a 12-block radius for 20 minutes searching [...]

Here's the (late) line-up for this week's Bay Area shows. A few canceled shows, a few DJ sets, and a gay music festival (no really, Homo A Go Go 2009 ). Tonight, indie pop group Casiokids with Slow Club and The Wave Pictures party at the Bottom of the Hill and the Bay Area's young jazz group, The Jazztronauts hit up Yoshi's Oakland. Tuesday, folk punk rockers (think Lawrence Arms ) Cobra Skulls and The [...]

DOWNLOAD: MP3 / iTUNES pmaCAST #16, better known as the PMA Summer Playlist, was ridiculously long and overwhelmingly popular. It was 120mb of summer fun and was downloaded over 4400 times so far, making it the most downloaded episode of the pmaCAST. This 17th episode of the podcast is an extension to the Summer Playlist, in honor of the Senate passing the $2 Billion Extension for the "Cash For Clunkers" Program . Ok, that's not true. But please get your hunk of junk off our roads. [...]
