Only once did I have the pleasure of seeing Miriam Makeba perform live. It was at the now-defunct WOMAD USA near Seattle, when she performed on a sunny afternoon at an outdoor stage before thousands. Her granddaughter Zenzi joined her on stage, and I snagged a coveted front-row seat, from which I snapped the somewhat fuzzy photo below. Now she's gone, and I have nothing more profound to say than the words uttered by former South African President Nelson Mandela: The sudden passing of our beloved Miriam has [...]

Miriam Makeba has died in Italy, apparently after being taken ill on stage . Born in South Africa in 1932, Makeba was a powerful voice against apartheid - to the extent that her citizenship was revoked in 1960, forcing her to live in exile for three decades. Musically, her journey took her from supporting vocals in her cousin's Cuban Brothers group, through the all-woman Skylarks, to a powerful solo career launched with a role in the musical King Kong. But it was an appearance in Come Back Africa which shaped her life - she sang [...]

Video | Miriam [...]

( BACK TO PART ONE ) [Okay, fuck it. Graceland , which should be at the end of this entry, will just have to be the next one. For now, this:] "At the end of one show, two men come to see me. I can tell right away by their Dutch looks, and by the way they look at me as if they own me, that they are Afrikaners. The two men from South Africa do not seem happy. One of them says, 'We came here because we thought we'd hear music [...]
"There are three things I was born with in this world, and there are three things I will have until the day I die-hope, determination, and song." Miriam Makeba Miriam Makeba is a South African who left her homeland in the 1960's because of her public stand on apartheid. She helped jump start the folk resurgence of the 1960's and 70's and won a folk Grammy for an album with Harry Belafonte. When the politics here proved to be no friendlier than those in South Africa, Makeba left with her then husband Stokley Carmichael for Guinea. Makeba sang [...]
