Few community festivals outside of Silver Lake can boast a better music lineup that this weekend's edition of Lobsterfest at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. Oh, the waterfront affair still has a family-friendly vibe — it's just that thanks to music curator Mark Sovel, the former music director of the sorely missed FM outlet Indie 103.1 (Dec. 21, 2003-Jan. 15, 2009, for you newbies), you can see some of SoCal's top bands onstage rather than the random tribute act. This year's lineup mixes great up-and-comers (Saint Motel, Fitz & the Tantrums, the Growlers, [...]

This just in: The music lineup for the 2010 Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival — Lobsterfest to everybody who got buttery fingers in past years — is its most impressive yet, featuring John Doe & Exene Cervenka anchoring a roster of some of SoCal's most promising up-and-comers and genre-diverse indie artists. The three-day shindig in San Pedro is Sept. 17-19. With the likes of Dengue Fever (Cambodian psych-pop), Fitz & the Tantrums (amped-up revivalist soul), Saint Motel (theatrical dance-rock), Gram Rabbit (desert-fried electro), [...]

Based out of LA, Miss Derringer has a sort of Rockabilly attitude. Their sound is inspired by classic country and popular female-fronted bands from the 50's and 60's, all with their own unique punk touch. Miss Derringer is a great band with a great look and a great sound. They are currently on tour promoting their third and latest album, Winter Hill . Check out those tour dates below. Their single from the new album had a great [...]

I have had an old song from Miss Derringer on my iPod forever it seems like. I love the band's combination of blues, country, 60's girl-group, and noir. There's something that gets me every time I hear that kind of dark music sung in a voice as smooth as Liz McGrath's. A little earlier this year, Miss Derringer released their third disk, Winter Hill . The album is based on the true story of an Irish gang war in Boston. The 1960's setting for the album's tale lends itself perfectly to the lead single, [...]

I have a few trackaroonies I'd like to give ya, and if you don't mind, I'm just gonna shout a quick sentence about each, and then bestow said mp3 upon you. Cool? Let's get gnarly! From the Bass and Treble camp, this hot tubby remix of B. Rich 's Make Me Dance does just as the song title implies. mp3: B. Miss Derringer's delirious cocktail of girl-group, surf and Western styles — all dressed up for that punk-rock carnival they're having in an alley downtown — is seldom more urgent than on the single "Click Click (Bang Bang)," the leadoff track on the band's 2009 album, "Winter Hill." Husband-and-wife collaborators Liz McGrath and Morgan Slade and their crack backing band are fast becoming more than just an L.A. cult thing. Catchy songs performed with both musical and visual panache will do that for a band. ||| Download: "Click Click (Bang Bang)" [...]

Miss Derringer would be the soundtrack to a roller coaster ride in the tiny town that Beetlejuice pops out of. If Beetlejuice was made in 2009 and his merry townsfolk were the members that surround frontwoman Liz McGrath . Their album, 'Winter Hill' was released on July 14th via Nickle and Dime Records and Triple X Records. Liz and her followers, fondly termed the Winter Hill gang (based on the infamous 1960's mob war between two rival gangs in Boston) gained inspiration for their new album [...]

That annual collision of people, pavement and pop music known as Sunset Junction is upon us. The two-day street fair may very well be on its last legs — I frankly don't know what to make of all the political wrasslin' — so I vote that we just enjoy it while we can. At 20 bucks (unless you got the $15 tickets in advance), it's a good value. Bring sunscreen, mix in some water, be polite. After the jump, my very rock-ist take on the lineup (full lineup here ): Photo of the [...]

That was fast. Yeah Yeah Yeahs have replaced Beastie Boys as co-headliners at Lollapalooza . The Beasties were forced to cancel their upcoming tour because Adam "MCA" Yauch is undergoing treatment for a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland. ☛ Nice gig: Local rapper Kenan Bell has been tabbed as the opening act for the upcoming De La Soul tour, which begins Thursday and hits the Key Club on Friday. ☛ Perfect: Kudos to whoever decided to cast St. Louis rockers Living Things [...]

The songs of Miss Derringer are filled with tears, and blood, and an unhealthy dose of weaponry and various sharp objects. The Los Angeles quintet, not unlike the visual art of its frontwoman Liz McGrath , roots around in a sort of Gothic-tinged Americana while applying a whimsical veneer to its tales of felonies, misdemeanors and crimes against the heart. McGrath doesn't just smile at Death, she shimmies a bit for it too. Live, Miss Derringer is a strange, wonderful and strangely photogenic force. On Saturday night at the Knitting Factory, McGrath and bandmates Morgan [...]
