New Music this Week ! Someone You Should Know the new track from Miss Fairchild is yours ON THE RISE - For decades, Nantucket Island has served as a haven for a community of artists and musicians, and source for a creative wellspring that serves both Boston and New England very well. Today's music spotlight shines brightly on Miss [...]
A few years back, I met Miss Fairchild from Nantucket (that sounds like the opening to a great limerick) with this outrageous track off their Ooh La La Sha Sha EP. It sounds like it just shuffled from another decade, with half-steps and then a little side lunge: Number One - Miss Fairchild I wore that song out on long runs that summer. In fact, hearing it now makes my pulse race. Lead singer Daddy Wrall [...]
by kevin diamond Anyone else feeling funky in this oddly warm Autumn? I don't mean funky like skunked beer, but funky like Pants Off Dance Off. If your November surprise seems to be the need to dance, I've got just the band. Miss Fairchild hail from my home town of Nantucket, and they're essentialy the former-whaling-capital-of- the-world's house band. They just self-released a new EP, Won't Be Your Kept Woman , and it's more of the same Earth-shattering, house-quaking, James Brown [...]

I've mentioned the New England pop act Miss Fairchild in these pages before , but somehow my particular influence hasn't rocketed them into the fame stratosphere quite yet. In an effort to promote their just-out (and quite good) Won't Be Your Kept Woman EP, the band has released a mixtape by occasional member Sammy Bananas. It mixes the band's own music with a ton of thoroughly enjoyable tracks by other artists (Prince, George Michael, Janet Jackson), and it's so far been successful at pushing back the invading forces of winter gloom. Plus, the mix features a snippet [...]

by kevin diamond I met Sammy Bananas for the first time on a hot summer evening when I was a high school student on Nantucket Island. 10 years later, on another hot summer night, we met again, this time at a Mexican restaurant In Park Slope, to discuss joining the ranks of the Fools Gold label (Label of A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs, home to acts like Kid Sister, Kid Cudi, and Jokers of the Scene), his work with pop-funk masterminds Miss Fairchild , and why the 90's [...]

I caught Miss Fairchild at Space Gallery in Portland, ME the other day and I was very impressed. I'll be honest that I went to this show to see DJ Sammy Bananas and the fact that this was mainly a Miss Fairchild show was not lost on me. I made sure to catch their set, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much better they are live than on their album's tracks. I have rarely seen some white boys bring the kind of funky soulful material that Miss Fairchild brought to the table. I have heard them be compared to [...]

Ah, the last day of 2007. We have about four different options for this evening and no one can decide anything. Both my brother and sister are still in town, which adds to the fun myriad of possibilities. Right now I think the frontrunners are either going to Heidi's to drink hot German wine (she just got back from a trip to the Paterland), doing something in Denver with my little brother, or perhaps just the usual NYE tradition of sitting on my porch with that bottle of vodka and a shotgun. Also, in related holiday news, my [...]

Download: Miss Fairchild—"Number One" Download: Miss Fairchild—"Vanilla Place" Here are a few tunes off the new album from the insane blue-eyed funk/R&B band, Miss Fairchild , Ooh La La Sha Sha. These guys are 100% committed to what they are doing. This isn't just some suburban white kids play-acting at being an 80s funk band. Lucas showed the record to someone and they said, "I bet this band isn't funky. This is just some indie pop band with a drum machine, right?" WRONG! Miss [...]

The promo materials promise that Miss Fairchild aren't a bunch of "suburban white kids play-acting at being an '80s funk band." Well, unless they were born in Detroit fifty years ago they are exactly a bunch of suburban white kids posing as an '80s funk band, and guess what??? THAT'S OK. All I care about is that you actually pull it off without a whiff of irony. Miss Fairchild does just that. They are 100% committed to a rump-shakin' dancefloor party, no wink-wink-nudge-nudge attached. Miss Fairchild bring the smooth, R&B-styled party-pop, the kind that'll have all your friends waving their [...]

Cincinnati 45 at Cleveland 51 This was an amazing game. I missed Sunday at ACL due to the need to recover from the previous three days and the fact that I could lay in a bed all day and watch the NFL. I know, I missed a lot of great bands, including my favorite - MMJ. Sorry if that bugs any of you. Anyhoo, this game was hella exciting. Ocho Cinco dove into the Dawg Pound after one of his touchdown [...]

If any of you out there are regular readers (I know; I flatter myself, right?) I want to tell you that this site will no longer be updated on Saturdays and Sundays. Updates will only happen Monday-Friday. So, yeah, that's that. Fridays Random Thoughts : -Why do so many people bag on Pitchfork yet read it everyday? Is it to make sure you hate it? What a dumb way to be. (For the record, I like Pitchfork. Its convenient, updated with ridiculous regularity and has a [...]

If you're a guy thinking of cutting off those luscious Shannon Hoon locks you've been growing since your sophomore year of high school, what better way to go out than in a blaze of glorious mulletry? That's definitely what this guy did in a wonderful bit of photo-chronicling (what did we do before the Internet?). Also check his endeavor to consume locally and scramble up a pigeon egg instead of his normal chicken fare. Not to give away the story, but he writes, " All in all, pigeons, I was let down by [...]
Miss Fairchild - Number One. In the movie of my life, Miss Fairchild is the house band for the good times. On this new record, they've really figured out how to sound like a band, which is what they are. The Great Dunlap's flute has never sounded better. P.Nice's beats snap and bounce like a greased rollerskate wheel. The pinched vocals are smooth like buttered honey. It's rare to hear a band having so much fun on record. And that doesn't even come close to the sexual explosion of their live show. They put on one of my favorite shows...
