For this month's Key Studio Video Session, we profiled Ben Smith , a consummate songwriter and leader of the West Chester-based chamber-rock group Missing Palmer West . This fall, he digitally released his debut solo album Crooked Earth . For our session, a string trio and drummer joined Smith in the studio to perform the record's highlights, revisit a tune from his late-'90s rock group Wise And Foolish Builders , and cover one of his all-time favorite cinematic pop songs: "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" by The Smiths. (Listen for that on The [...]

The first time I heard the name Missing Palmer West I was half expecting them to sound like Danny Wilson or Deacon Blue (two fave's of mine from the 80's). Some photos from this past Friday night's all local show at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia. It was a packed house from the get go as Bitter Bitter Weeks kicked off the night with an excellent set that focused on the more rock side of their catalog and left the quieter numbers at home this time for a high energy set that recalled at times the southern jangle sound of early REM or Let's Active . Up next was Missing Palmer [...]

Another weekend in upon us. Of course that means great shows playing the area. Here's what to check out. Friday The Oranges Band are set to release their new album The Oranges Band Are Invisible upon the masses and to celebrate the new disc, they are having a little shindig at the Ottobar with a few friends from the area. Also on the bill are Gary B & The Notions , [...]

Summer is winding down, kids are going back to school and bands are finishing their summer tours or starting fall ones. This weekend is very front heavy with a lot of action on Friday then tapering down to a single show on Sunday. Most are one city shows so be sure to check out who is where. The 80's are making a huge comeback. So many artists and groups that thrived in the early MTV era are going out on reunion tours after years of not performing. [...]
