The Twilight Singers - The Lure Would Prove Too Much R.E.M. - Perfect Circle (Tourfilm) Fugazi - Last Chance for a Slow Dance Dave Alvin - King of California Billy Bragg & Wilco - Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key [...]
This week's mix: some soul, some country, some 80's college rock, and some good old Boston punk. As usual, if you like the music, go buy it, preferably at a real store that could actually use your money. Because these songs are only here until next week's mix goes up. (And if you're not sure how to actually make your mix, click here .) 1. Ann Peebles, I Can't Stand The Rain 2. The Colourfield, Castles In The Air 3. Night Canopy, Seasick [...]
I've gotten way behind in visiting my favorite blogs, but tonight I found a nice cache at several of them. I am posting songs available at band, label, and promo sites, but you can find scores more tasty ones at Eardrums, particularly here, here, here, here, and here. The Glass - Fourteen Again mp3 El Perro Del Mar - Coming Down the Hill mp3 (pic) The Midways - A Lot Like Me mp3 Attention Now!
stereogum haben es wieder getan. Nach dem schon sehr guten OKX legen sie nun mit Drive XV ein Tribut an das vor 15 Jahren erschienene R.E.M. -Album Automatic for the People nach. Politische "To-Do-Liste" für Oktober: 1. Free Burma 2. National- und Ständeratswahlen 3. Punkt 2 in dem Sinne erledigen, dass Blocher abgewählt wird (dann gibt's nämlich eine lustige SVP-Zeitung , sauglatt wäre das.) Mission of Burma - Academy Fight Song
Nathan Nothin here... I've been barricaded in the vinyl room for four days now. I just now found out that it's Sunday night. So my Saturday Mix is a slight misnomer, well sue me. The hurricane curtains block out all light, all sound louder than my stereo. Four days of nothing but vinyl... What I have convinced myself that I believe that I remember that I heard, random pockets of memory left un-eroded by the torrential squall of drugs & alcohol, the following soundtrack from my latest lost weekend. Tracks: Baby's on Fire - Brian Eno [...]

Same scenario for this mix, folks...no artwork, no song order. Sorry 'bout that. Sleep does a body good. I'm feeling shiny and new this morning. I've been haunted by a few ghosts lately that I'd like to lay to rest. I've been exerting far too much energy analyzing why more friendships and relationships in my life have failed than succeeded. As I sat behind the controls of my Mac last night, I came to a startling conclusion...music is the best friend I'll ever have. [...]

I'm going to my mom's birthday celebration today. In recognition of that, here are some mp3s that she probably wouldn't like, but which nonetheless have "birthday" in the title. Patton Oswalt – "You Are Allowed 20 Birthday Parties": mp3 Mission of Burma – "Birthday": mp3 Grandmaster Flash – "The Birthday Party": mp3 Andrew Bird – "The Happy Birthday Song": mp3

You know things are getting bad when even the monks are getting pissed off . Hopefully the whole mess leads to a redemocratized Burma because, let's face it, the alliteration in Mission of Myanmar is just silly. (We'll see who snatches up that band name first, though.) From The Horrible Truth about Burma: Mission of Burma – "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" (live): mp3

I usually make it a point to avoid getting caught up in the entertainment industry's orgies of self-congratulation otherwise known as award shows, but Maura, who has an inexplicable fondness for celebrity gossip, decided to watch last night's Emmy Awards pre-show and ceremonies on the TV in our bedroom, where I was working on some projects at the computer desk. It's been a while since I have had to bear witness to the proceedings, but I don't remember the Emmys being as off-putting and just plain awful as they were in the largish chunk of the show I was [...]
H ello there. I've been relaxing and just taking it easy around here for the past week or so and it has been really nice. Amy's been sick a good portion of the week, so I've been playing a little more Mr. Mom that usual. all is well though. The songs below were the first ten that played on the iPod this morning as I was doing dishes and making coffee. Not a bad way to start the day, eh? MP3 | Sludgeworth - Another [...]

The Burma boys are staying close to home and playing a few dates this September. I haven't been fortunate enough to see these guys live, so if your in the area of any of these shows, check it out and let me live vicariously through you for an evening. Sept. 20 - Toad's Place, New Haven, CT Sept. 21 - Pearl Street, Northampton, MA Sept. 22 - Decibel, Providence, RI Sept. 23 - Institute Of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (4pm and 8pm) [...]

S o here is another installment of the Uncle's Primordial Soup and I would be willing to bet that a huge portion of the people reading this has a hard time remembering life before the Internet. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the Internet's biggest fans, but it has changed the way I (and many others) feel about music. Instead of vinyl LP's and CD's we have MP3's that we got from eMusic or our favorite music blog. The cover art on my Zune is shrunk to a minuscule [...]

Variation Two of A Prelude to Interpol's Our Love To Admire : No Trendy Réchauffé (see yesterday's post for the (cranky) introduction). [ré·chauf·fé -- n. 1. Warmed leftover food; 2.Old material reworked or rehashed. [French, past participle of réchauffer, to reheat, warm over, from Old French rechaufer : re- , re- + echaufer , to warm (from Vulgar Latin *excalefāre : Latin ex- , intensive pref.; see ex- + Latin calefacere , to [...]

(from More Fun Comics #65, March 1941; reprinted in Wanted: The World's Most Dangerous Villains #3, November 1972) Where are your Great Old Ones now, fish face? All the cult intrigue, astrological omens, and prophetic ravings of a "Mad Arab" amount to a hill of beans when stacked up against a strong left hook from a Lord of Order. Doctor Fate is in residence, and no [...]
After Roger Miller pulled the plug on Mission of Burma (reportedly due to Tinitis) he started the art-noise ensemble Birdsongs of the Mezozoic . How playing with this, at times incredibly noisy, post-rock instrumental group, was better than the blistering guitar solos of Mission of Burma is beyond me. Anyway for a time in Boston this band was the shit, both live and on vinyl. The band was one of the first I encountered to use tape loops and such a large assortment of effects. I remember overhearing a conversation the band was having before one of [...]
More songs, since I have time! Hopefully none of these are repeats, but I might have missed some. Cocteau Twins - Cherry-Coloured Funk ( buy ) The bassline on this song always threatens my speakers' structural integrity, but I crank it up anyways. ♥ Nina Simone - Little Girl Blue ( buy ) and Little Girl Blue (Postal Service Remix) ( buy ) Another beautiful jazz song from Nina Simone. Interestingly, [...]
Whew. I'm exhausted from yesterday's post. The hardest part of doing the survey was seeing how many great albums only got one, two 1. Matador Matador houses artists as diverse as The New Pornographers (and, of course, A.C. Newman), Belle & Sebastian, Cat Power and (formerly) Interpol. And just about all of them got votes. There were votes for albums by Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Mogwai, The Ponys, The Frogs . . . Even Laura Cantrell got one for "Humming by the Flowered Vine." [...]

Cultural Learnings of America for Make Docile Gullible Nation of South Africa. Dubious Musical Highlights from the Second Half of 2006.
