PopMatters has a divine article trying to pin down those varied vocalizations that singers have been throwing in the midst of their songs since time memoriam. Maybe James Brown is the best-known for his off-the-wall hollers, but read about the rest. Here are some snippets from the extremely well-written and entertaining article, as author Zeth Lundy takes you through the different species of yowl
If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is a moving picture worth? An interesting question considering the title of the great new Mission Of Burma DVD This Is Not A Photograph . And while it certainly isn't a photograph, it is a snapshot of the Burma reunion coming together that is filled with tons of old footage and plenty of live material both old and new. Additionally, the DVD does a pretty good job of telling the story of the old Burma days in Boston in the late seventies and early eighties. [...]

Well, it's finally done. Another year in the books. It's been a good one and I am extremely thankful for all the great music that came out this year. I am also extremely thankful for all the people that have commented and sent e-mails over the entire year showing their appreciation for BOAWS. It really means a lot. Anyway, enough of my babbling. Here it is, my 20 favorite albums from this year. I'll probably not be updating until after Christmas, so I hope everyone has a great holiday and a safe one [...]
Most bloggers are not funny. Actually, scratch that. Most bloggers are extremely funny, but in a we're-laughing-at-you-not-with -you kinda way. Occaisionally, there are a few others out there who join the 'Stamps boys in pointing and snickering. Jerry Yeti demomstrates with a marvelous faux (yet simultaneously all-too-real for some) top ten...
I think it's always a good year for music, whether or not you consider the albums that have been released that year to be good work. Music that we deem bad can still have a positive effect by pushing us toward something different, distinct from whatever it is we didn't like about it. [...]

This was difficult. I've been keeping a running playlist of my favorite SotY (Songs of the Year, natch) and it keeps getting longer . For this list, I managed to cut it down to a mere 55 but decided to organize it by genre/style, rather than attempting to rank the Fiery Furnaces against Ghostface Killah against Mission of Burma. For the record, my favorite song of 2006 is the shorter version of the Fiery Furnace's "Benton Harbor Blues." Also for the record, this list is missing a few notables from my top 30 (Destroyer, Joanna Newsom) because [...]
I don't really want to do a 2006 list thing because there are so many, and mine would probably look pretty similar to other blogs lists, instead of that I'll describe three of my favourite albums of 2006 in three words because it seems like a good idea at this time, basically its like writing a best of 2006 list without actually doing it, anyway on with the non-list. Neko Case-Fox Confessor Brings The Flood 3 words: magical, stunning vocals MP3: Neko Case-Star [...]
Ten more of my favorite albums of 2006. Can you even handle all the suspense? 40. Oh No! Oh My! - Oh No! Oh My! (Self Released) MP3 | Walk In The Park An entire album of twee indie pop with plenty of catchy little "la la's" and "ba ba's" for me to sing to my daughter. I dare you to listen to this album and try to not to sing along. [...]

"Imagine if you could go back to something that was totally amazing 20 years ago and basically, it's not the same culturally, the world is completely different, but that thing is pretty much where you left it... I cannot think of too many opportunities in life where that happens," enthuses Fenway Records head and former Geffen A&R guy Mark Kates toward the end of "Not A Photograph," the Mission of Burma documentary issued late last month on DVD by MVD. That sense of awe and wonder regarding the reanimation of noise rock legends Burma several years [...]

It was brought to my attention that a slight recap might be in order for my favorites of 2006 thus far. I guess this year has pretty much flown by that I hadn’t even thought about the idea of doing one. Anyway, today I am posting a track from each of my favorite releases thus far. Some of you may notice that I’ve already posted quite a few of these, but not everyone has been reading that long. So it’s a good way to catch up too! Click on the band/artists name to take you [...]
I think last week's mix was pretty darn successful thanks to staying within the boundaries of making a mix. Sometimes it's good for me to have a theme, it keeps me focused and makes me delve further than I normally would. This week's theme is a fairly simple one but has some interesting results. The theme's title is Name Dropping and revolves around songs that happen to have a famous person's name in the title of the song. I've gone from some of the most arty bands out there to some of the most popular, and from some indisputably famous [...]
