Here, for no apparent reason, is a collection of bands named after places. Architecture in Helsinki I never knew the city was renowned for its flair for buildings. I guess it's catchier than Architecture in Slough. Beirut A New Mexican who named his group after a Lebanese city and plays eastern European, French and Mexican-influenced folk. Somebody has identity issues. [...]

The Flaming Lips Embryonic Warner Bros. The Flaming Lips' Embryonic is endearingly weird album. Alien sounds can be found in the fore of the mix, in the rear, and in every section in between. And when the Lips aren't processing the familiarity straight out of their instruments, they have Karen O, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer, screeching like a beast unleashed on her backing vocals. Embryonic is a long album. Its 18 tracks and 70+ minutes would be considered lengthy in any era, but [...]
Mission of Burma is Mission of Burma. That's just the simple fact of the band. Their brawny, angular post-punk is, as the annoying/astonishingly accurate cliché goes, is what it is. The fact that they took a nearly 20 year break after 1983 doesn't really seem to change that, either. That isn't to say that the music's uninteresting or anything; in fact, their noisy, math-y, often-complicated take on punk (along with groups like Pere Ubu and The Fall) pushed the genre's envelope into the absurd. And new release The Sound The Speed The Light doesn't change the equation [...]

Kelly Davidson While another hugely influential '80s Boston-bred band that many thought would never return to active duty may get more attention, Mission Of Burma have been much more productive in their second tour of duty, managing to tend to their legacy with proper reissues of Vs and Signals, Calls & Marches while adding to it with three impeccable albums in the past five years, the latest being The Sound, The Speed, The Light , released last week. The third album into Mission Of Burma's resurrection finds the band dealing with middle age in more ways than one.

We're rapidly approaching the point of no return for releases this year, but mid-October always seems to toss a couple wrenches in folks' year end list plans. The latest from The Flaming Lips fall in that category - you think Pitchfork might want an amendment to their 'Best Albums of the 2000s'? Toss the new one from Neon Indian in as well, in that regard. Elswewhere, there are fine/interesting/worthy releases from Har Mar Superstar , Thao and the Get Down Stay Down , The Heavy , Erin McKeown , Fanfarlo [...]

I have a confession to make. For years I would loudly proclaim my opinion that Lexington was vastly inferior to Louisville and that nobody in their right mind would ever want to live there. Now, my love for Louisville hasn't waned a bit (I still think it's the greatest town in America), but Lexington is quickly making a case for being one of the most exciting towns in the Midwest. With this year's Boomslang Fest courtesy of WRFL , they are [...]
This week, Mission of Burma makes Music Go Music.Do musical movements don't die, they lose momentum. The sounds of 70s pop aren't what they used to be, but Music Go Music doesn't have any qualms about bringing them back. And Mission of Burma is still carrying a torch for the early days of post-punk.We've got new albums from them, plus tracks from Daniel Johnston, Elvis Perkins, and A Place to

The fact that Mission of Burma's second post-reunion record, The Obliterati , was so good that it ranked amongst the band's best work was a feat few bands could pull off. Typically, when bands reunite the "new" stuff pales in comparison to the "old" stuff, but somehow Mission of Burma beat that cliche to a pulp. Now the band is faced with topping its own standard-bearer, The Obliterati , which, even as an ardent fan, I would be crazy to expect. This past Tuesday Matador released The Sound The Speed The Light , Mission of [...]
This week saw an unprecedented amount of new material come my way, recommended by people both imaginary and real, passing in one ear and out the other, rattling a few synapses on its way through the vacuum. It's all decent (or else I wouldn't bother reviewing it), but some sticks out more than others. Given the short time I've had with each album, my perceptions might change once I've had more of a chance to digest them, but these are my initial perceptions. Starting with my favourites from the week, and working my way down (roughly in order of likeability) [...]
After reissuing their entire back catalog, Mission of Burma is back to the new album routine, but with a new take on their old sound. The band has left the path thier last two albums set, and for good reason. Despite their critical success, OnOffOn and The Obliterati didn't live up to the dynamics of early releases like Vs.. The passion was there, but the band's signature sound wasn't. A piece of
