Mist and Mast - "Getting Out Soon" The Make Out Room sits in the center of a hot scene - Cafe's Lolo and Revolution and a mini-park across the street and all - and yet it operates in relative quiet and on its own terms. One such example - the happy hour show. For whatever reasons, the management often splits the evening between live music early and DJ sets later- the music afficionado's penchant to still be napping or eating before 9:30 be damned. And [...]

I ended up at Dan Sung Sa again, a rare late night eatery in Oakland, and a new personal fave. They are open evenings only from 6pm-2am. The walls are plastered with vintage Korean movie posters and most of the seats are in cute little curtained booths. If you find yourself in Oakland after midnight, check them out at 2775 Telegraph. The spicy pork is delicious. The menu is extensive and includes chicken gizzards, snail salad and yogurt soju! Just prior, LA based Radar Brothers played the Rickshaw Stop [...]

There's a fella from a management group called Banter who sends me multiple emails every week promoting several of the bands that Banter represents. The quality of the music he sends me is almost-always very good. However, the number of emails received - combined with my [...]

Here's a quick look at things we couldn't get to this week: Soundgarden After 12 years of ups and downs, grunge metalheads Soundgarden have announced they are reuniting for a tour. I'll fess up and say that despite Chris Cornell's recent musical bungles I'm still a sucker for these guys and I'll probably go to the Toronto show if there is one. We'll give you more details as we get them.

The wonderfully subdued and melodic music belongs to Mist and Mast, a group of four musicians that combine to create a sound that is as flawless as it is catchy. Craig Adams, Bill French, Jason Lakis (whom you might know from The Red Thread) and Alex Steinhart comprise this Oakland, CA-based band and they've recently released their new self-recorded album Action At A Distance. While reading up on the band I've noticed they have earned comparisons to numerous bands, from Syd Barrett–era Pink Floyd to Beachwood Sparks. It could be the melodies, it could be the blends, it could be [...]

It makes sense that Mist and Mast's lead contributor describes his album as piecemeal when his reviews garner comparisons to bands from REM to ELO. Former metal band leader, Jason Lakis has taken his solo project's new album to the streets in what he describes as the first time he could hear all the parts as he was writing it. Upon listening, you will hear a full band on about half the tracks, as
