Mister Heavenly is comprised of indie rock veterans Nick Thorburn (Islands/The Unicorns), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse). Their mutual admiration society was in place before Mister Heavenly took shape. Modest Mouse and Man Man toured together repeatedly, starting in 2007. Nick and Ryan met in Philadelphia in the final days of The Unicorns, or maybe the early days of Islands. They’re not sure, but they hit it off instantly. They bonded over a lot of things—music, cough syrup, being signed to the same label—but it was one of their fundamental differences that inspired Ryan aesthetically. [...]

Every once in a while I meet someone who casually mentions that music videos are dead and I'm always shocked. Music videos have never been more alive and vibrant than they are now in the age of video democracy online. This post is a celebration of the creative spirit that fights every day to set great songs to even better visuals. You guys are my heroes. Watch the videos in a countdown stye playlist below or continue on to catch them embedded 1-by-1 with my woefully minimal commentary. [...]

Editor's Note Happy New Year! Some of you are probably wondering what happened to us. Well work, family, and of course organizing our little (not so little anymore) variety show Snob Theater has taken quite a bit of time away from the website. We've had probably the best year so far and I'm happy to announce my favorite records of 2011 to launch the reboot of Kata Rokkar. I don't review albums at all but i do listen to a shitload and it's been a great and surprising year for new music. [...]

2011 has been a great year for albums. Whether it be the eclectic US hip-hop sounds of Danny Brown, Das Racist, Shabazz Palaces, Beans, Beastie Boys and Pharoahe Monch' s long players or the alt-rock sounds of Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, White Denim, Real Estate, Boston Spaceships and Chad Vangaalen - it's been varied and special. There's been some beautiful oddities too, like Unknown Mortal Orchestra 's eponymous debut, the [...]

Here you go, my top 10 albums of 2011. The top 5 were actually really easy to settle on and went back and forth quite a bit with 6-10, which was somewhat of a surprise. But no going back now, my picks are official and floating around the world wide web for everyone to scrutinize. And speaking of scrutiny, I would love some feedback. Do you agree/disagree with my picks? What were your favorites this year? Heck, what were your least favorites? Leave a comment below and keep the conversation going. [p.s. see how my final top 10 [...]

I've been a fan of Future Islands since I first heard 'em a couple of years ago. This year, the synthpop trio from Baltimore released their third LP, On The Water , and it was an unexpected favorite of mine. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a fan and expected to like the album, but I didn't expect to like it so much. On The Water is a damn good album, one of the year's best. If you haven't given Future Islands a chance yet, now is [...]

2011 was (another) odd year for music. It felt like the average quality of albums was raised a bit, but nothing really stood out as a life-changing album or single of the year. Still, there was a lot of great music to be heard. Here's fifty of my favorite tracks from the year, ranging from [...]
