if the bloc party happen to be your thang then head on over to criminal tomorrow evening and be wowed as they helm the wheels of steel for a special dj set starting at 6 pm. they play later in the evening at the tabernacle. on saturday, i will probably be attending the free in store by non other than mitch easter - the man behind a whole bunch of stuff but most notably for producing rem's early, and finest releases. he will be playing at the aurora in the highlands @ [...]
It has only taken him 25 years, but Mitch Easter has finally released a solo album. Dynamico is the first new music from Mitch since his '80s band Let's Active split up in 1989 - eighteen years ago. And I have been waiting for this album all of those 18 years. Mitch is best known as a producer. He helmed the boards for early records by REM, and went on to work with Chris Stamey and Dinosaur Jr.
Fast becoming one of my favorite labels, Gnomonsong is releasing Jana Hunter's second album There's No Home (buy it) tomorrow. Sadly no download is available, but you can hear the gently prickly "Babies" at her MySpace. This is the sort of personal songwriting that you want to take pleasure in savoring; listen to the slight variations in the insistent offbeat chord. Pick of the week! Laura Veirs

Or something. Anyway, Mitch Easter is God, so why not? And Dynamico was on AllMusic's list of most noteworthy new releases for the current week, nestling fresh in my emailbox this very day. I'm delighted to have found "Time Warping" at Easter's website and am going ahead and reposting another by Easter, plus a song by Shalini , the band fronted by Easter's wife, Shalini Chatterjee. (Easter plays guitars and adds vocals, while Eric Marshall plays drums.) And in [...]

Outside of the new Baby Teeth record , not much going on this week in New Releases land due to the fact that 99% of the music industry will be frolicking the streets of Austin this week. However, as a big fan of old school R.E.M., I was really amused to see the name " Mitch Easter " in the new releases section. Easter is easily best known for his work as the producer for R.E.M.'s early classics Murmur , Reckoning and the Chronic Town EP, but he also managed [...]
This week marks the release of Dynamico , Mitch Easter's first solo album and first album release since the last Let's Active record on the now defunct I.R.S. Records in 1988. Well, unless you count the re-release of Cypress and Afoot as one CD in 1989. Mitch has been filling the last years doing the occasional tribute album and mostly producing and filling in guitar duties in his wife's band Shalini . This release is exciting to me as I've been a fan of Mitch's work in Let's Active as [...]
Mitch Easter is probably best-known as a producer, behind the boards (along with Don Dixon) on R.E.M.'s first two albums, which were recorded in his famed Drive-In Studios (formerly known as the garage at his parents' house in Winston-Salem, NC....

Earlier this month I held off posting these two songs involving primo performer/producer Mitch Easter because 3hive diligently got to them first. A decent interval has long since passed, though, so here they are here. Background information can be found at my previous post and the links provided. Easter's new album, Dynamico , is due for release next month. Mitch Easter - Dynamico - [...]
Ok, I can't honestly say that I was ever a Let's Active fan during the 80s. A friend of mine had a younger sister that loved them but she was "fluffy" in a Cure/Smiths/REM kinda way by my teenage standards. I'm fairly certain I had one of their cassette tapes at some point but can't be sure. As a result of my preoccupation with hardcore punk bands at the time, the only similar music

I recently rekindled a new friendship after googling an old friend. Except this wasn't a friend from high school or college, it was a friend from the old hi-fi: Mitch Easter. Mitch Easter gained recognition for his production skills in the early '80s producing R.E.M.'s first single, "Radio Free Europe," and their first two LPs with Don Dixon. And thinking back to my own history as a music fan I don't remember which came first for me, R.E.M. or Mitch's band Let's Active. I do remember that Let's Active played a key role in formulating my taste for pop music. [...]
