By Erin Routson Some music is undeniably written by women. Contend that if you will. Seeing Lightyear (aka Lauren Zettler) open for Mitten and Allison Weiss at Brooklyn's Glasslands merely hit the idea home. Sometimes there are places that only women can go. Taking the stage with her band, she launched into a set that ranged from the gentleness of lullabies and near-whisper sung lyrics to the punk vibes of yelping "Oh my god!" and being unable to contain her energy. Her songs are [...]

The little bird in the artwork above may be a nod to the smaller nature of the EP but don't think for a second that these mini-albums aren't serious beasts. This is some Hitchcockian Birds business with ferocious and passionate music being delivered by some of the most exciting bands breaking out right now. It was certainly an exciting year for the often under-appreciated EP format. In the increasingly saturated music world I really enjoy a well crafted EP that leaves me reaching for the repeat button instead of checking to see how [...]

With the horizon of a new year seemingly inches away, we're proud to present our best songs of 2011. We have been slaving over albums and hidden tracks for the past month, but now the beginning of our five-part list of the best of the best. 100. Maritime - Paraphernalia The charmer of Human Hearts held the ethereal appeal from a group we come back to with each new record. The group signed with Dangerbird this year and we only see bright things in their future. [...]

When we set out to make these lists at the end of each year, we usually try to include tracks that aren't on the Best of Albums List to narrow down the choices. This year we took a more honest approach, but it was terrible to cut 365 days worth of songs down to a mere 25 tracks. We changed them up until the last possible minute, driving ourselves, our loved ones, and each other crazy with our "what if..."s. In the end, though, these are the songs that made us hit repeat, and carried us [...]

THE BIG FLOAT: RAMONA FALLS, AGESANDAGES, KEEP YOUR FORK THERE'S PIE, ORCA TEAM, BULL RAMOS (SE Water & Market) Described as a "public display of affection for the Willamette River," The Big Float's big idea is to get Portlanders off their asses and into the water. No, wait—it's safe ! Join over 1,000 Portlanders as they parade across the Hawthorne Bridge, toss their floats into the water, and merrily drift across our beloved river . A celebration will greet the "festive floatilla," complete with beer garden, live music, swimming, and food carts. CECILIA D'ANASTASIO [...]

its summer, and i cant constantly be listening to shit that half makes me want to curl up in a ball and drink away the day. no, sometimes i need something that feels good to the soul, and good the ears. portland, oregon's dirty mittens are currently filling that deep dark hole with their blend upbeat and sunny pop with a little bit of r&b thrown in to make it a bit more interesting. its kinda like pop music for the morning after. eyes are blurry, coffee's brewing, pop a couple of advil, plop down on the couch, [...]
INTO THE WOODS QUARTERLY: FEELINGS, THE RESERVATIONS, PIGEONS, RADIATION CITY ( Holocene , 1001 SE Morrison) The dedicated artistic staff of Into the Woods made their mark filming fascinating musical performances from local and national musicians, so it's only fitting that they curate a quarterly event that showcases such bands. Got some ninja love from our favorite Brooklyn Indie Pop band Mitten last night. We have now been officially alerted to a great many number of things developing for the duo. First, in a bold move of generosity seldom seen in these post-Osama times. They're giving away a new/old song and its swell companion remix [...]
![[Introducing] – Mitten](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3437658_lg.jpg)
Tweet "See You Bye" is the debut EP from new Brooklyn based electro-pop band Mitten, and it sure makes a good first impression: opening track "All That I've Got" has been bouncing around my head nonstop for days on end. The bass wobble that gets the track going is a little unsettling, but it's soon joined by some infectious percussive rhythms and upbeat synths that are never in your face. Maia Macdonald's vocals are effortless and reek of cool. In [...]
A new weekly feature in which our writers share their favourite tracks of the week. Oh Land - 'Wolf & I' (Chosen by Elaine Buckley) My fondness for Scandinavian female singers is no secret - Robyn and Lykke Li are both constants in my listening patterns - but Oh Land has completely taken over of late. I purchased 2010's Oh Land EP out of curiosity from seeing her featured on many 'Ones to Watch' lists at the start of the year, and have been hooked ever since. 'Wolf & [...]
