MK Ultra Comments: This hybrid just doesn't pack the punch I'd hoped for. With O.G. Kush & G-13 for parents one could assume the end product would be an absolute killer, but I don't feel this batch lived up to the hype. Arriving in a sealed, darkened container I was pretty stoked to try it out, but opening revealed a less than spectacular set of buds. The trichome coverage is nothing exceptional, thin and short resin stalks are there but kind of uneven in keeping with the overall density of [...]
Exit Clov are a Washington, D.C.-based indie pop quintet that rock like 90s grunge outfit L7 but whose pop sensibilities lean more toward one of the best Japanese acts from the same timeframe, Shonen Knife . Their sound? How about a bucket of Pop Rocks laced with Coke (not the kind that you'd find at Studio 54) . Also, they're just plain fun. Check out the clip for their video "MK Ultra" "after the jump" [...]

MK-Ultra are one of the most under rated hardcore bands from the 90s. Or from ever. I know that's kind of a heavy statement and I'm sorta' known for using hyperbole, but in this case you need to take my word for it. They might not get the attention and reverence of their Chicago hardcore peers Charles Bronson and Los Crudos -- and MK-Ultra were admittedly less prolific than both -- but they were at least as good as either. And for the time being, they're the only band of the three that now has a proper "best of" properly [...]

John Vanderslice seeps San Francisco music, a perfect fit for Noise Pop.

No apologies this time. I already missed the Jenny Lewis / Heartless Bastards show this Tuesday. Pissed. Really wanted to go. I've loved her since Troop Beverly Hills and The Wizard . Someone please tell me about the show. Send me pics. Please. Thursday, June 25 Starlight Mints / Evangelicals @ Granada Theater John Vanderslice / The [...]
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): mk ultra - the Dream is Over [...]

The first thing that comes up when I type "mkULTRA" into Google is a startling Wikipedia entry about a secret government mind control experiment. Here's a troubling quote: "Project...

John Vanderslice is the man. He is so much the man that I have shortened his name to simply "The Slice". Album after album, The Slice continues to churn out solid indie rock that strays from normal pop tendencies. There's no recipe to his genius, he just writes great lyrics(a bit of poetry and a bit of story telling) and is a master producer. The drums are thick and the guitar is up front with you patting your back, urging you to go on and tap your hand on your leg as if you [...]
I've been a little obsessed with this song from John Vanderslice's earlier musical career in his band mk Ultra. Found on the debut self-titled album from 1994, "The Lesser Beauty" is one of fifteen tracks that brought Vanderslice's talents as a songwriter to the public view. Lasting close to five years, the band, mk ultra, released three albums, the aforementioned self-titled debut, along with

R eally, it should have been at least 50. If you listened to this week's podcast, you may have heard three drunk guys try to remember something about MK Ultra , a band from the '90s. We were at a loss. It was all in relation to the song we played by Exit Clov (who were great both times I saw them ,troopers, really, it was hot at OU Thursday night) and we got a bit tangential - it happens a lot - we weren't prepared - someone said they [...]
