" múm (pronounced "moom") is an experimental Icelandic musical group whose music offers a delicate mixture of glitch electronica, chamber instruments (accordion, trumpet, bells, clarinet, violin, piano) and atmospheric vocals." Do you like Sigur Ros? I do. How about Bjork? I don't. How about Múm? What they all have in common is the fact that they're all from Iceland. And yes, to most people ears it sounds strange, but this stuff is great! Very relaxing downtempo electronica with a good beat and female vocals. Today's mp3s are from the album "Finally [...]
Múm I haven't stepped off the indiepop sidewalk for a post in quite a few weeks, so allow me to do so now. Come September, I'm predicting that Múm 's first new record in OVER THREE YEARS will very likely become my favorite of the year. Of course, this could be untrue, but at the moment I'm crossing my fingers that Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy will be beautiful, incredible and eveything I'm hoping for. I'm still pretty bummed that [...]

Oh, Múm. Thank you for announcing a new work. Boy has the culture of me missed your sweetness and idiosyncratic sounds. Too much Ulrich Schnauss and Cex can drive a young man cuh-crazy. From Spin: Iceland's experimental pop pioneers Múm have announced the release of their fourth album to date, the exhaustingly titled LP Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy, Let Your Crooked Hands Be Holy , dropping September 25 via Fatcat. As the follow up to 2004's Summer Make Good , the new record marks [...]

In the face of huge and incredibly wealthy companies suing one other over because of their fears of the internet, and all the terrible, terrible things it will bring, it might be a good idea to think about how far things have come since the days of Napster and Audiogalaxy. Once, bands and labels did as much as they could to prevent mp3s reaching the internet. Now, almost all labels are engaged with it, and it forms as much a part of their promotional and retail world as anything else - and that's before getting into the whole Web 2.0 [...]

Yes, it's true I am a moody bastard. Especially lately due to my current state of life where nothing seems to go right these days. It's hard to be positive when everything around you is negative. It would greatly help if I had a job and wasn't living out of a suitcase. All my things are put up in storage and my life is literally on hold. There seems no end to it either. I long for the days where I can have my life back, feel productive and be a part of the world again. Let the [...]

Blue Mountain , Green Grass , Orange Sky Ever have one of those perfect weekends? Where you visit friends you haven't seen in about a year. Where you blow off some steam playing drinking games and maybe a few tokes. Where sleep comes easy and replenishes your body with energy, energy drained by stress. Where on the ride home a song comes on the radio at just the right time. Our car was headed north on Highway 15. Maryland was [...]

Hm, apparently I've still been listening to the old stuff a bunch (and Sally Shapiro ). While rediscovering how much you enjoy favorites is always a good time, it doesn't really make for a particularly fresh set of picks. So, in the interest of variety, let's dive deeper and look at some new artists, some of which are already dominating this week. Enjoy! The duo Azure Ray is signed to the prominent Saddle Creek Records . They've definitely [...]
I previously have never seen this ad, possibly cause I was only 1 at the time. This is the 1984 Apple Macintosh commercial that was first shown during the SuperBowl. I watche it today at our training day for reps...which was super informational and I actually enjoyed it. There was a DE from Seattle named Kurt, whoop for the Northwest. Does the narrarators voice in this commercial sound very familiar? "For everything else theres Mastercard"...I think it's that guy. [...]

múm - Scratched Bicycle / Smell Memory (Fatcat 2007) múm – The Peel Session / FatCat One of the most revered electronic-pop bands of the early 00s, múm has all but disappeared from the map as their output slowed and a large wave of new bands copped their style. Originally banded in 1997, the four Icelandic teens (whose names I'm going to omit for it will take me an hour to insert all of the correct accents and punctuation through Word) set out to combine the [...]

Here we go. Another short list of items I've been really enjoying over the last few months. I've done this before. Twice actually. But it's been a year since the last time. So I thought I'd share with you a few things I've been diggin'. Chris Tim's Atomic Energy mix: Friends Chris and Tim produced a wonderful mix in early 2005 and I just recently re-discovered it. Wow. What you see on Tim's blog
Icelandic collective Mum have always walked the line between dreams and reality. Their blend of experimental electronica and cinematic orchestration coupled with almost childlike vocals bring to mind fractured images of childhood fears and cloudy daydreams. The music also invokes the cold climate of their homeland; cascading down the back of your neck in tiny droplets that induce shivers on impact. Alive with wonderment and curiosity, the songs run down lonely dirt roads only stopping once in a while to watch the icy rain collect in the ripples of puddles. John Peel was able to capture their transition from a [...]

(múm, Ferrara, 13/5/05 by r_mal ) You've got to love a band who (possibly) chose their name on the basis that the word looks like two elephants nodding. Or apparently, you haven't got to, as I've known little or nothing of múm upto know. And for why haven't I known? I don't know, I'm clearly a fool. The nice men at Fat Cat sent me a copy of the band's latest disc, a short (= 4 track) Peel sessions compilation. Those two words, that sainted soubriquet still holds a certain sway, don't you [...]

Holloween isn't officially until tomorrow but the grown-up version of trick or treating, i.e. getting tanked in a silly costume, hit its prime over the weekend. A few sights and sounds... the Vaselines - "the Day I Was a Horse" I, horse. //the Vaselines - the Way of the Vaselines: a Complete HIstory - buy Modest Mouse - "Trailer Trash" J. [...]

mp3: Nightly Cares Dear Mum, Oh man school is killing me!! I am about to throw my hands in the air and give into the world of corporate dronery. I mean I will probably have to abandon all morals that I think I have in this world of academics as I enter the working world anyway. Become a marketing executive? Sign me up!! Selling massive amounts of butt-potatoes ? No problem. In consequence of the sheer amount of things I have to [...]
I played a lot of ping pong and watched a lot of "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air" last night, at times simultaneously, and I didn't really go to bed until like...2 in the morning. For those of you who think I have no life, well, you're probably right. And to further imply that assumption, I've decided to become an amateur DJ and remix the most unusual indie cult songs. Here's what I've come up with

Today officially marks the first day of fall, which is my favorite time of the year. It's definitely what I look forward to most with the transition into winter being the next. To me it's the most beautiful time time to be outside here in Auburn, walking around campus and taking in the changing leaves and the cool weather as the nights get just cold enough to put on a jacket (which is my favorite kind of weather). Some of my favorite memories happened during this as well, so that just adds to why [...]
