"Smell Memory" by Múm which clocks in at 9:23 Two days ago, early Tuesday morning around 1am, I lost internet service at my home. A mini-disaster for someone such as myself, without doubt. I spent the better part of the evening troubleshooting everything I could think of - trying in vain to crack the codes to the other secure networks in my apartment building and unplugging/re-plugging the power to my cable modem and AirPort thirty-two times each. I know, I counted. Come on, what else was there for me to do [...]

múm: "Kostrzyn," from the Dusk Log EP (Fat Cat, 2004)
múm , a post-rock/electronica band from Iceland, released Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy in September 2007, which has proven to be a definite shift in their career. I wasn't sure what to expect from this album, considering their lead vocalist left the band. What would happen to múm once the soft, breathy childlike (and almost creepily so) voice of Kristin Anna Valtysdottir disappeared? Usually, we find bands going to shit once core members leave—Pink Floyd are a prime example. Roger Waters was able to uphold the band after Syd Barrett left due to his experimental genius that [...]

Band Of Horses - Is There A Ghost (7" single/ Subpop) De Band Of Horses debuteerde vorig jaar ijzersterk met de nummer 1 hit The Funeral en het album Everything All the Time [...]

múm: "This Nothing in the Faraway," from the Dusk Log EP (Fat Cat, 2004)

" With the first gray light he rose and left the boy sleeping and walked out to the road and squatted and studied the country to the south. Barren, silent, godless. He thought the month was October but he wasnt sure. He hadnt kept a calendar for years. They were moving south. There'd be no surviving another winter here ." -- from Cormac McCarthy 's The Road photo by douglas roesch [...]

I ain't one to swoon. I really ain't. Like the other day, I was waiting at a traffic light when an SSC Ultimate Aero drove right next to me. It was revving its engine and shaking its azure-toned ass, and its driver was a Victoria Secret model who had just done a show but didn't have time to change so she still had her peacock headgear and leopard skin lingerie on. I didn't even look up. In fact, I was so bored, I started counting the number of molecules on my dashboard, and changing the radio frequency to Dangdut FM [...]

I haven't had a lot of time to download any new music lately, since the majority of my time on my computer has been spent just attempting to get it running smoothly, but here's a few tracks to tide you over until - well, Wednesday at least. And the fact that it's wet and cold outside and there's a wintry mix to the tunes is only a mere coincidence, I assure you. Yes, I do wish there were still autumns in NJ, instead of a switch directly from summer to winter, but sadly, that is no [...]
Rather peculiar sounds from Iceland, Múm have ventured towards another path of experimentation after losing one of its members Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir (she also appears as one of the twins in Belle And Sebastian's 2000 album art for Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant). The title of the new piece in three years by Múm, is: Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy , and bizarre but beautiful as their music goes, they smoothly and strikingly integrate orchestral and electronic sounds together in the sense of audacious clatter of noise and [...]

In preparation and anticipation for the Sigur Rós Hemia DVD release (Nov 20, US), I picked up the Icelandic pop music documentary Screaming Masterpiece . The film presents an in depth cross section of the current musical climate as well as the deep history of one of the most musically talented and original countries in the world. This is accomplished through full length song live performances from a multitude of Icelandic bands. I emphasize 'full length song' because it would have been much easier to only include excerpts and show more bands, [...]

The last I heard from Iceland's Mum was their 2002 release Finally We Are No One which, while beguiling in its unique tinkertoy electronica way, didn't compel me to keep up with their subsequent releases, especially with the departures of both Valtysdottir twins who had been both the voices and faces of the band as I knew them. So it's a bit of a surprise that their latest release, Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy , doesn't sound like the completely different band that I'd expected it to. [...]

That's short for New Music Tuesday , for those not familiar with the lingo of the youth today. And speaking of youth, I'm still depressed about the appearance of Matthew Broderick during the haltingly unfunny "Bee Movie" shorts starring Jerry Seinfeld in the midst of recent The Office episodes. I'm not sad that Seinfeld no longer appears to be funny, or that Broderick's film career has been reduced to cartoon voiceovers. No, I'm sad that Ferris Bueller himself looks older than my father. Wow. I mean, I know I haven't seen him [...]

Coming a long way without the benefit of their most recognizable member's contributions, Múm return with an album that is both delicate and forceful. This first single acts as a nice doorway to the new Múm sound. Múm - They Made Frogs Smoke 'Til They Exploded 7" Expanding their scope into delicate traces of samples that reveal both the innocent nature of their music and the complexity with which it's made; this debut single captures the band's charming sense of whimsy. The elfin [...]
