Toronto - When we walked into the Wrongbar at 11pm there was already a large, and somewhat weird (in composition) crowd. I thought it was because we had missed Bobby Birdman 's set (who was interesting on the strength of myspace samples - alas I was delayed by the awesome power of Mass Effect 2). But there was an even weirder girl standing alone on the stage, complete with fuzzy hair and a pair of huge white-rimmed plastic glasses. Being the ignorant snob that I am, my autonomic reflex said: "she's a stage [...]

Everything was just slightly askew at Brooklyn Bowl this Tuesday. Nothing that happened seemed to line up with reality in quite the right way. There was a parade and Mardi Gras beads, but the sheet of ice covering Brooklyn made walking down the street a near impossibility. There were burlesque dancers and a free show, but Brooklyn Bowl was barely even half full. There was a mosh pit, but it couldn't even sustain itself. And my favorite suburban stoner-whiner was playing with who I will always think of as Jay Reatard's band, raising him from the dead in my [...]
It's snowing...not sure I'm going.About a month ago, we here at The L decided to make this year's Fat Tuesday one for the books. We asked Wavves if he would play a free show; he said yes. So did Hipsterdom's newly crowned queen of party-starting, MNDR. We obviously wanted to incorporate bead-throwing, so we made plans for local burlesque stars to ride on a float accompanied by crazy costumed

Nathan Williams is back in town. You can never predict what you're going to get with Wavves, but I'm betting it will be some pretty strong lo-fi punk tunes at the very least. Maybe a hissy fit, maybe a bar fight with members of another band. You never know. Plus, the show is free, so it's really a win-win-win. MNDR is an electronic dance group that have been getting quite a lot of buzz recently, and Total Slacker is playing, as well. Apparently it's all tied in with some sort of Fat Tuesday parade thing , so I would [...]
Monday: Dream Diary, North Highlands, Phil and the Osophers, + Fluffy Lumbers @ Bruar Falls 8pm $5 [ info ] Once again we enter a week with the looming possibility of snow. If this is getting on your nerves you are not alone in your frustration with the so-called "Global Warming"! Thankfully we live in New York where the subway runs no matter how much snow is on the ground and where the snow melts pretty damn fast thanks to all the steam heating. So while we may want [...]

Last time I saw Restless People , I was restless waiting for Washed Out after midnight on a Monday night (!!!) at Santos Party House . Restless People were a really fun supporting band, packed with high energy and air horns (my favorite!) Tuesday night they played Brooklyn Bowl with one of our new favorite new chicks on the block, MNDR ! It was a great night with friends [The Culture of Me, Sheena Beaston] for FREE music and swag provided by Diesel! Check out some pics I took from the set in between my [...]

Ever since catching both MNDR and Restless People at the FADER -sponsored fort of radness during CMJ last year, both acts have been hotly-tipped to totally dominate 2010. This Tuesday, the two talents teamed up again for FADER Bowl at the apropos-venue, Brooklyn Bowl. [...]

Featuring MNDR, Restless People and more!
Occupying a space somewhere along the lines of Khaela Maricich of The Blow with less irony for irony's sake and Cex minus the overly bipolar emoting, Amanda Warner aka MNDR is a recent Brooklyn transplant we first heard at the...

Caps-locked NYC-via-L.A. DJ/singer MNDR (real name: Amanda Warner) has been steadily building a Lady-Gaga-meets-Santigold buzz for her smart beats and blow-'em-away live sets. Details and tracks are scarce on her MySpace page , but "Fade to Black" (as can be heard on JeffMix2010.01.24 ) and the slowed-down, brilliant left turn "I Go Away" (promo video below) show huge, OMG upside. MNDR: Fade to Black (from Pitchfork ) MP3 • [...]

A picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words... so some keywords you'd probably glean from the short story concerning the picture of Ebony Bones above are: kaleidoscopic colors, humor, MAC cosmetics, 8 Minute Abs, and Josephine Baker. But pictures have always been fibbers and what with the advent of Photoshop, they're down right disingenuous. This pic isn't fibbing so much as it is with-holding information by only telling half the story. The other half concerns Ebony's sound, which is just as striking and eclectic as her look. Equally reliant on electric guitar riffs as [...]
Geaux Saints! Did you catch the Super Bowl last night? More importantly, did you watch The Who during the halftime spectacular. I've got my thoughts on how it all played out, which I was extremely verbal about during the presentation. No need to rehash, but you can scroll through my twittered-frustrations here if you must. Now that the footballing is over, we're ready to focus on an extremely busy week, chock full of rad new music news. [...]
What's the perfect remedy for a freezing cold Thursday in late January? A hot lineup of three of the most unique and talented Brooklyn acts warming up our bodies and souls at the monthly traveling party, Crush. This month, Zambri , MNDR and Tayisha Busay took to Glasslands with a fistful of fire ready to make us sweat and sway. [...]

And now the next q and also a with GROOMS ... q: What is the last song you (really) heard? a: Fallen Angel (lala link) by King Crimson q: What is your favorite food? a: Brick oven pizza , but saag paneer sounds really really good right now. q: What is your favorite band to see live? a: Lately, probably Sisters . [...]

I feel extremely BLESSED to be homegirls with Amanda Warner. She got her ghetto-fab attire instincts from Oakland, where I met her. She's been mostly in experimental noise bands like 0th and Triangle... although I'd actually like to refer to Triangle as "experimental e-alternative" if you will afford me the indulgence. She began to play around with all of her knobs and synths and crazy gear by herself in her bedroom when she had barbecues and we would all watch her freak out on her bed and it was kind of like a religious experience. She's reined it in a [...]

MNDR at Glasslands 1.21.10 Last Thursday I danced the night away at Glasslands for the awesome new traveling monthly party Crush. A great surprise that night was the Brooklyn trio Tayisha Busay whose naughty, fun and downright silly lyrics reminded me of Le Tigre + Avenue D. MNDR (who is at the tip of everyone's tongue at the moment) put on another solid set, which in turn was the highlight of the night. Zambri was the icing on the cupcake, closing out the fantastic night of music and dancing. Can't [...]
