The beginning of this week has just slipped right by me. I have a show review to share for James Vincent McMorrow, but that will have to wait until the weekend at this point. I am tied up with work and school and I am terribly behind in my class readings. This semester is proving to be a bit more difficult than I expected. Sigh. So how about some quirky atmospheric music from Mock Orange? I think that is a marvelous idea. Mock Orange has been creating music since 1998. Their latest full length album, [...]

While Mock Orange is starting to move away from its influences, the band still feels like it's trying to find its own voice. When you think of the term "indie rock", chances are you'll think of a band that sounds a lot like Mock Orange. The Evansville, Indiana band's new record, Disguised as Ghosts, is a tuneful, energetic charge through 10 lean power-pop tunes. The band knows its recent musical history, tapping into the dreamy nature of acts like Galaxie 500 on jangling opener "Grow Your Own Soul" or the psych-pop of the Flaming Lips on "My Car",...

Mock Orange deserve better than this. To little fanfare, the Indiana quartet has released the follow up to 2008's brilliant 'Captain Love', an album that I wouldn't hesitate to list among my absolute favorite records of the last five years. These guys should be featured on magazine covers and late-night talk shows, maybe even cereal boxes and action figures, but there has barely been a peep about their new album 'Disguised as Ghosts' in the music press, and that's a shame. Following a monster album like 'Captain Love' is no easy task, but in their near 20-years together [...]

Hearing Captain Love made me want to HUP-two-three-four, stand at attention and snap a million salutes because it's so rare for me to take such pleasure from a rock album with pop persuasions. Mock Orange present a rare batch of influences before the listener and DARE him/her to deal with it, up to and including: A resemblance, in both the lead and back-up vocals, to How it Feels / Rising [...]
Photo by Chris Strong There are many, many indie artists I check out weekly, and three things help catch my eye - (a) an interesting band name, (b) a funky album cover, or (c) a very good band/artist picture. Mock Orange struck gold with two out of the three. Having no idea that their name was derived [...]

You may not have heard of Mock Orange , but the Evansville, IN based group has been making music since 1998, probably earlier. They're stopping by Skull Alley on April 17 in support of Captain Love their latest LP and first that the band has crafted and licensed to labels. It's a bold move for a group 10+ years old. Mock Orange does well-crafted indie pop better than most in the area, so be sure and drop $5 at 7pm and enjoy the show!

With Thanksgiving coming up tomorrow this is your last chance to fill up on live shows before you fill up on the foods. Right here in Baltimore there's a sweet event over at Sonar with The King Khan & BBQ Show, The Jacuzzi Boys, Hollywood, and Sick Sick Dogs. Down in DC Method Man and Redman smoke out the 9:30 Club. Up north in Philly Jedi Mind Tricks take on the Trocadero while a great indie show is taking place over at the Khyber with Mock Orange, Audrye Sessions, and Person L. mp3: Mock Orange - World [...]

Tonight in Baltimore don't miss the amazing event at Sonar with The Dodos, Au, and Wye Oak. Or maybe you'd want to take a few steps over to The Talking Head to check out Mock Orange, Miniature Tigers, and Pillow Queens. Down in VA the Galaxy Hut has Prabir and the Substitutes and The Ambitions. Finally up in PHilly don't miss a great hip hop show at The Fire with Mr. Lif, Reef The Lost Cauze, MAGr, and Cymarshall Law. Also in Phill are Cheers Elephant, Butane Variations, Creeping Weeds, and I [...]

Tonight in Baltimore Rams Head Live has the legendary Built To Spill, Meat Puppets, and The Drones. Wicker Park reminds me of going to the Towne Mall in Middletown, Ohio when I was 14 and ate sweaters from (the) County Seat for breakfast. For those of you that don't know Middletown, or (the) County Seat, you can congratulate yourself for successfully navigating past the Mead blue flat line section in your life. But beware of the HoT ToPiC's six corners at Damen, North, and Milwaukee Avenues. Right now, as we speak, there is an astonishing spectacle of white Subinterurban Perplexia Humanis that have migrated from Lakeview and Lincoln Park to lay their eggs of liquid-shit [...]

Last Tuesday (9/9/08), Wednesday Records released the latest offering from Evansville, Indiana's Mock Orange [ Official Site , Myspace ], Captain Love . The album was produced in Nashville with producer Jeremy Ferguson (Be Your Own Pet, Josh Rouse), and the record picks up where 2004's Mind Is Not Brain left off and according to some early reviews, might just be Mock Orange's most sophisticated release to date. Tourdates, mp3s and more "after the jump" [...]
Indiana's own Mock Orange has had a relatively successful career. With seven albums under its wing, the friendly and warm quartet still find a home at an indie label, and while they're not selling out shows every night or opening for R.E.M., its sound has managed to travel as far and diverse as Japan. That's pretty ambitious for a small alt. rock band out of the Midwest. In fact, that's just the type of success most songwriters dream of, really. It's taken four years and some intricate carving, but Mock Orange has officially followed up 2004's [...]

On Tuesday, Mock Orange released Captain Love , the Indiana based outfit's first endeavor since 2004's critically acclaimed Mind Is Not Brain . Produced by Jeremy Ferguson, most notably known for his work on My Morning Jacket's Z , the 11-track effort (+1 bonus track), is described to pick up where Mind Is Not Brain left off, the band's most "sophisticated, ambitious and affecting release to date." Look for our impressions - in the form of an album review - later today. Or you can make you're own, either by picking [...]

I'll be honest. I had trouble getting into Mock Orange 's Captain Love when I first heard it. I felt like it was too dischordant for my liking. But something told me to give it a second chance. Thank God for second chances. Otherwise I would have missed something great. Captain Love is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Mind Is Not Brain (which I loved). I realized upon second review that all it needed was a bit more time to sink in. Once it does, you can't [...]
Podcast, Episode 51, In Which Lola's Expensive (not really) Software Crashed Dozens of Times (Sorry this is late! My Propaganda software crashed over and over. I tried to use Audacity, but I started to hyperventilate, so I stopped. My blog post is right before this post, and right before that post is a special podcast episode (which worked just fine). I've written about Evansville band Mock Orange on other occasions . In fact, their latest effort, Captain Love , was one of my favorite albums of 2007 . The thing is, to the dismay of domestic fans, the album was only released in Japan last year due to always-problematic "label issues". But now these fans can stop dismaying and start rejoicing, for on September 9th it will finally see a U.S. release courtesy of Wednesday Records . Expectations have a tendency to grow exponentially when a band disappears [...]

When you reach the apex of the blogosphere, record labels and PR firms from around the world want to be your friend. They'll send you countless albums in the hopes that you will write positive reviews and help launch careers. If they really, really care, they'll show up at your doorstep with a bindle of blow and a high-priced hooker and announce, "wanna hear this awesome new band's CD?" I hate turning those guys away, but I've got a very important routine of blogging in my underwear and going to work for minimum wage, and I don't need another drug [...]

Put on your scarves and Buddy Holly glasses, cause today we're bringing you the band that was emo before the term existed, and once the term did exist, still kicked ass. For everyone who grew up on the first of their three self-titled albums, and Pinkerton , here are a few new ways to think about your favorite songs. Oh, and did I mention their new one comes out tomorrow? =w= Asher - My Name Is Jonas One of the better-known songs on the album, I [...]

Remember when I used to blog here? No? Well, here I am... and at the risk of appearing completely irrelevant, here are my 25 favorite albums from 2007. Many apologies for the delay and for my general lack of posts over the past couple months, but now that I'm done with college I plan on dedicating a lot more time to this undertaking. I expect I won't post again until I finally sort out the move to my new server. I've just gotta deal with a slight technical hiccup, but hopefully you'll be hearing about that move very [...]
