It was a good week in music, September 14-19, was. On Friday, beautiful sounds emanated from my Weezer Cruise buddies The Antlers (who managed to beat out the shitty system at VENUE with beautiful songs and an epic "Putting the Dog to Sleep"), joined by 80s throwbacks and openers Class Actress. Ok, encore une fois il va falloir passer outre l'a priori du groupe utilisant « moderne » dans son patronyme et usant de cette esthétique sombre et austère, chère à Joy Division. With an opening track about smoking with cats in an alleyway, 'Strange Bruises' heralds the return of Vancouver post-punkers Mode Moderne. Don't you just hate summer colds? I know I do! I still went to the beach today though - that was the highlight...of it. Now I'm just sitting around feeling all mopey and stuffy...perhaps that's how the goth-popnicks in Vancouver's Mode Moderne feel all the time? Nah, that's not it. There's little doubt where Vancouver's Mode Moderne draw their influences from. Their forthcoming mini-album Strange Bruises is dripping with the sound of early '80s Goth-infused indie rock. The album opens with the lead single "Nightly Youths". It's a songs reminiscent of early work from The Cure . This Friday at The Waldorf Hotel! Not only are Craft Spells majorly swoon worthy but they're totally legit too. It took me about 4 seconds into their song 'After The Moment' too fall in love with them. Their sound is so reminiscent of the 802s post punk/new wave scene.
