There's little doubt where Vancouver's Mode Moderne draw their influences from. Their forthcoming mini-album Strange Bruises is dripping with the sound of early '80s Goth-infused indie rock. The album opens with the lead single "Nightly Youths". It's a songs reminiscent of early work from The Cure . This Friday at The Waldorf Hotel! Not only are Craft Spells majorly swoon worthy but they're totally legit too. It took me about 4 seconds into their song 'After The Moment' too fall in love with them. Their sound is so reminiscent of the 802s post punk/new wave scene. Mode Moderne 's "Undiscovered Country" has a strange tension between darkness and light. It begins with a bouncy, bubblegum-y synth figure, but even by the second chord, a faint tension begins to creep in. The eeriness fully sets in once singer Phillip Intilé enters with his deep, Ian Curtis-esque croon. If you love gloomy, '80s-tinged electropop, then this Vancouver band is for you. That's the bitter situation facing White Lies at the moment as yet another review (this time Alexis Petridis' in the Guardian ) picks up on their dullness and nonchalance. Of course there are some serious Joy Division overtures but what would Sunday evenings be without pleasantly easy thrills. To be fair Vancouver band Mode Moderne do pepper 'Les Neuf Soeurs' with lots of their own idiosyncrasies which allows the song to break free from lazy comparisons (bold hugger). The thrust and momentum supplied by the bass chords are central to this songs' success yet it's hard not to be taken in by the juxtaposition of the coolly dispatched lead vocals and tender female cooing.
