I'm learning a bit about myself while in Italy. Yesterday for instance, while driving in the hills of Chianti in Tuscany, I learned that some wineries put small, unassuming electrical fences around their vineyards. Those fences are probably installed to keep the deer away. After trying to reach through to grab some grapes, however, I realized that they serve another purpose - to keep out Americans. My left arm was numb for about an hour. Since the Tuscans tried to kill me, my wife and I traveled south and arrived in Rome today. We wanted to feast [...]
Id like to post some Chill Rob G. Another blog did a post on him, but I can't seem to remember (or find) which one it was to give them the credit. Anyways.. two of his tracks were reportedly sampled without permission by the German Techno pop group Snap and used in the track "The Power". Ive also heard a conflicting story that the song was sold to them. Snap went and redid the vocals on the track and jack'd it up a bit and had a huge international hit with the [...]

T he building that I work in plays almost exclusively what most people would call 80's music. The problem is that it (and most other such stations/compilations) neglects a huge portion of what I would consider to be the best songs of the 1980's in favor of the big commercial radio hits. There is plenty of cheesy pop (a la Richard Marx) and plenty of hair bands (Cinderella, etc...) but no early punk, post-punk, or new-wave anywhere around. Instead of the overhead music, I'll turn up my speakers and play this Uncle's Primordial Soup inspired [...]

Last night, Maura was feeding the outdoor cat colony when she noticed that one of the cats, Sioux, had an ugly, suppurating puncture wound on his back. I cleaned it out as best I could with peroxide and a topical antibiotic, but because it was so deep and nasty looking we called the vet's office to have it looked at. The appointment was at 9:30 this morning, so we figured that we'd take Sioux in, have the cut cleaned out and sutured, then drop the poor guy off at our house before heading into work. If only it turned out [...]

I'm so New Wave/post-punk/college-rock tonight that my hair wrote this entire post by itself. Modern English I Melt With You (Tokes' Rock The World Mix) I Melt With You (Rock The Radio Mix) I Melt With You (Carl Dub The World) The promised second-half of my 'I Melt With You' remixes. I had another mix of this song but the vinyl was scratched to hell and there was nothing I could do to save it...wow I sounded like George Clooney right then. [...]
I'm going to have to change the subtitle of my blog. Because the more 12'' remixes I post the less this becomes a place for "forgotten or overlooked recordings". I'll think of something incredibly witty and appropriate over the weekend most likely. Or I'll just eliminate the subtitle all together and be all mysterious and shit. Modern English I Melt With You (Bass Meltdown Mix) I Melt With You (Stop The Radio Mix) I have so many damn remixes of this song that I'm spreading them [...]

Picture at The Illustrated Smiths You know, things have been rather fast and frantic down at FiL Acres of late. I shan't bore you with the minutiae, but suffice to say I'm still chewing vigorously all of the work and family delicacies I've bitten off. Looming largest on the horizon is this Big Fat Greek Wedding we're going to on Saturday. You see, I agreed to DJ the thing and while I am looking forward to it, I'm also rather petrified. First, the guests range from aged Hellenic widows [...]

Please visit Berkeley Place and the start of this series: [...]

I was watching TV the other day & saw yet ANOTHER commercial featuring "I Melt with You" by Modern English - this one for Ritz Crackers - & I thought to myself: "Colleen, do you think any of the kidz know about the OTHER Modern English songs? The ones that haven't sold crackers, fast food, etc? The ones that didn't become the new wave versions of that Smashmouth song 'All Star'?" It started out great for Modern English, getting a song on a the Valley Girl soundtrack [...]
