Toronto band Modern Superstitions have recently announced a new seven-inch single on Last Gang Records , featuring the songs Heartless Bastards sounding "School Days" and "Way I Want" (stream below). The single was produced by Brian Borcherdt (Dusted, Holy Fuck) and the band will use their hometown show on May 31 at the Garrison to coincide with the release of the new seven-inch. Also look for them at Last Gang's NXNE Party on June 16. ( found here )
Toronto indie pop/rock outfit Modern Superstitions release a brand new 7" next week. The record, "School Days/Way I Want" was produced by Holy Fuck 's Brian Borcherdt. Listen to it here: Modern Superstitions play a release show at The Garrison in Toronto on May 31st.

Vanessa Heins Kingston duo PS I Love You have a pretty well-established aesthetic. Over there, you've got Benjamin Nelson manning the kit with an impressively nimble brutality while looking bored to a degree that would impress Charlie Watts, and then there's Paul Saulnier shredding every neck on his guitar while simultaneously howling and yelping into the mic. It's a recipe best served loud and live and that's where I preferred to experience them, where it was easier to focus on Saulnier's fantastic fretwork than his acquired-taste vocals which I had trouble acquiring. Still, [...]

Facebook / modernsuperstitions.com/ Modern Superstitions have previewed three tracks on their brand new website as a taste of their new record 'Sunbleached', head over and listen, they are quite excellent. I recognise all three tracks from their current batch of UK shows (of which I've seen two), which sees them move their punchy, energetic rock-pop to the next level, led by the resonance and strength of Nyssa Rosaleen's impeccable vocals the Toronto four piece are one of the exciting and enjoyable acts I've had the pleasure of seeing [...]

Frank Yang I've been trying to do piggyback a write up of Sloan's latest The Double Cross on a live review all Summer but have been constantly foiled. For their album launch in-store at Sonic Boom back in May , a perfect storm of non-functional transit made a 10-minute trip take 45 and while I could hear the show, I couldn't see a damn thing. Then for their two-night stand at the Mod Club I was felled by a post-NXNE cold so those didn't happen. It certainly [...]
This is the story of NXNE told through the perspective of its softer moments, of the things that were there before and will remain to stay long after the last hashtag.

June 16th was the first day of the Live in Bellwoods : the NXNE Picnic Series 2011. This is their second year doing this. It is basically bands playing in Trinity Bellwoods and doing a stripped down acoustic sessions. Great way to enjoy the weather and chill out to the music. On the first day I got to see: Modern Superstitions Graham Wright (Solo) [...]

Frank Yang Hands down, the best thing to happen to NXNE in recent years is the designation of Yonge-Dundas Square as the festival's main stage and making the shows staged there - usually featuring the lineup's biggest names - free for everyone. And what's better is that despite being located in pretty much the most central and public place in the city, there's been no signs that they festival has been concerned about diluting the quality of the performances to be a little more family-friendly; witness last year's near-carnage of Iggy & [...]

Michelle Ford Another year, another NXNE , another NXNE preview post. I'll apologize in advance if this one's a little less thorough or exploratory than previews past, as travels and general business has taken up time that would usually be spent cruising band websites and Myspaces Facebooks, Bandcamps and Soundclouds. But I can offer one unconditional endorsement for the coming week, and I'd like to think it's not a wholly obvious one: Vancouver's Louise Burns . Her debut Mellow Drama came out a couple [...]

Frank Yang There's not a lot of cross-Canada tours that skip over Toronto, but the Exclaim -sponsored country-wide trek headlined by Shad , and for this leg also featuring fellow Polaris shortlist alumni Miracle Fortress , looked to be doing just that with Thursday night's show at Wrongbar presented as a private show, attended by contest winners and attendees of Exclaim's 19th anniversary party which went before the show. But it's not as though either artist had been strangers hereabouts lately - both [...]

I'm going to do this for every festival I go to this year, a list of 'ones to see', starting with The Great Escape in Brighton which kicks off next Thursday 12th May (that's exactly one week away!), it'll be my fourth visit and I think this year is probably it's best line-up to date (scratch that, it definitely is). If you don't know what The Great Escape (TGE) is, take a peek here - 3 days, 30 venues, 300+ artists and without a doubt the best new band festival in the UK if [...]

Tweet Rawr! Tiana here from Ride the Tempo here again bringing you some random Canadian tunes. Sorry for the 3-day-late post, I lost track of the date! 2011 has so far garnered some pretty awesome releases and here are some examples. Since these are super great, I'm going to only post 5 instead of 10 Little Scream One of my favourite releases this year is Little Scream's "The Golden Record". Its simple melodies mixed with [...]

by teepoo My first encounter with Modern Superstitions was when they opened at Sonic Boom this Sunday for Record Store Day 2011. They looked like pretty average people on stage but boy when Nyssa started to sing/belt, you could tell she had been performing for a while. She has that female rocker chic sorta vibe. Drummer Ben Reinhart also amused me with the fact he'd sometimes be hitting the drums with the maracas. Recently signed with Last Gang, they've released a pretty badass EP called All the [...]
A quick post as I'm somewhat hungover today, I just wanted to share my excitement about Modern Superstitions name appearing on the list of bands for The Great Escape, I can't find any more UK dates at the moment (other than an appearance at Above Audio on the 13th May as part of the festival), I think it's the bands first European trip and they will certainly be one my bands to see list, here is what I said about them back in January . See these videos for proof: [...]

sistermusic.ca Next Saturday, April 16, is Record Store Day and no matter what your feelings on the event itself and its attempts to convince you that you really need those songs you already have on a coloured 73, you can't argue with some of the perks. Specifically, the fact that many of the local retail establishments around town like to entice you into their stores with the promise of free live music. So far, Sonic Boom has the biggest lineup, running from day through night and pretty impressive. There's no [...]

Samantha Cardow With festivals come hard choices, and for this year's edition of Canadian Musicfest , getting underway with a handful of events tonight and in earnest as of tomorrow, I am choosing to eschew the club-hopping-ness that typically comes with these sorts of fest and largely plant myself in one place for each evening. Hard choice or lazy choice? A little of both. But just because I am staying put doesn't mean that I recommend others do the same. So by way of festival preview, here's a list of stuff that [...]

Toronto - Based on Sarah's review of their show this past November, I was curious to see what local band The Wilderness were all about. In fact, I had seen them once before, but committed minor concert douchebaggery by not totally paying attention to them. Based on the number of people who came out to see them at Lee's Palace on this night, it seems that The Wilderness is gaining a bit of a following. I'm sure that a sizeable part of their appeal is based not just on their songs (which did indeed get [...]

Facebook / http://www.myspace.com/moderns uperstitions http://www.modernsuperstitions .com/ I think I post as much music from Canada as any other Country. The next three Introducing bands all come from Canada too, whilst it seems that the UK is obsessed with either dub-step or a rock-revival (I try to keep this blog positive and ignore crap but The Vaccines / Brother - God help us), across the pond there appears to be a bed of talent waiting to come out to the masses... Modern Superstitions are from Toronto, [...]
