From first listen, the initial reaction to Modern Time Machines is, oh, this sounds like Silversun Pickups. And although this is a fair assessment—both bands feature hazy, baritone vocals atop whimsical shoegazing rock—this Los Angeles-based quartet is far from a copycat band. Modern Time Machines' cocktail of fuzzed-out dissonance and cirrus melody gets sweeter with each outing, and on "Mammoth" the L.A. quartet of Ben Golomb, Chanda Dancy, Dean Estrella and Nicole Smith fashions a four-minute cloud of melancholic shoegaze that gets under your skin a little. Ben Golomb is a familiar figure on the Silver Lake scene and an ardent supporter of his fellow L.A. musicians. He's also the first guy to tell you that a prime inspiration for his continuing to make music has been the Silversun Pickups — if not artistically, then the local heroes' personality and sticktoitiveness.
