For those who wish to revisit 1995 era Smashing Pumpkins, we've got Modern Time Machines just for you.

[A few new tunes from L.A. bands we had recently written about...] Hands , "Come to Know" — Although their name has only gotten slightly easier to Google, Hands finally released their long-awaited "Massive Context" EP this week, via Small Plates. Based on their live shows ( like this one ), the six genre-melding and multi-textured songs are only the beginning of what the experimental quartet has to offer — but we're happy to take what we can [...]

From first listen, the initial reaction to Modern Time Machines is, oh, this sounds like Silversun Pickups. And although this is a fair assessment—both bands feature hazy, baritone vocals atop whimsical shoegazing rock—this Los Angeles-based quartet is far from a copycat band. For starters, the band produces epic walls of sound by layering guitars, percussion, melodies, and violin that wash its listeners ears with loud, extravagant arrangements that groups are lucky to achieve at any point in their careers. Which brings me to my next point: MTM is gearing up to release its debut full-length, Continuity Girl, which [...]

Modern Time Machines' don't make songs as much as they make dervishes, swirling blasts of guitar that sound as if they've been picked up by a bold Santa Ana wind and, circular melodies and featherweight vocals intact, deposited in your consciousness like a slap on the ears. The quartet of Ben Golomb, Dean Estella, Satu Makeda and Joshua Daudert follow in the footsteps of a long line of L.A. shoegazers and noisemeisters — Silversun Pickups and Medicine are the most obvious references — and imbue their loud/soft dynamic with plenty of crunch. Their debut album "Continuity Girl," made with [...]

Modern Time Machines is the latest band to catch MOKB's attention. The band hails from Los Angeles and have been described as the love child of Silversun Pickups and and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but like those bands, early Smashing Pumpkins could probably be referenced as the primary influence. Their sound is epic and lound; everything you love about Shoegaze. Layered guitars, violins (not synths), and undeniable melodies make this a band to be on the look out for in 2012. MOKB is happy to be premiering [...]

Modern Time Machines' cocktail of fuzzed-out dissonance and cirrus melody gets sweeter with each outing, and on "Mammoth" the L.A. quartet of Ben Golomb, Chanda Dancy, Dean Estrella and Nicole Smith fashions a four-minute cloud of melancholic shoegaze that gets under your skin a little. The new video for the song features Chervine Naamani and Chinchin Zhang and was directed by Jon Maxwell. MTM, who teased with the track "Dweeb" this past spring, is working on an album for the new year. ||| Download: "Mammoth" [...]

Ben Golomb is a familiar figure on the Silver Lake scene and an ardent supporter of his fellow L.A. musicians. He's also the first guy to tell you that a prime inspiration for his continuing to make music has been the Silversun Pickups — if not artistically, then the local heroes' personality and sticktoitiveness. As Modern Time Machines , Golomb, along with Chanda Dancy, Dean Estrella and Nicole Smith, is working toward carving out his own sonic space. Fans of Swervedriver, Medicine and that other band with the initials SP should take note. ||| Download: [...]

[Birthday greetings go out today to Paul McCartney ... in L.A. tonight we have something of a Brooklyn Invasion:] Brooklyn's White Rabbits new album "It's Frightening" was produced by Britt Daniel of Spoon, and the music brims with the same spare-but-urgent qualities (that's the video for "Percussion Gun," above). The sextet headlines the Troubadour tonight with fellow Brooklyners the Subjects . ... Also in from the borough is electro-pop trio Chairlift [pictured], who made their mark with the song from the [...]
