Toronto - Another week, another series of concerts. My life is such a routine. Sharon Van Etten April 12th, Drake If you haven't been fully entranced by a Sharon Van Etten live show, then you get the opportunity to check that off your bucket list on Tuesday. The Brooklyn based singer songwriter is best seen in small intimate venues and the Drake is certainly one of those places. Her most recent album, Epic has garnered her a lot of deserved attention as it is filled with earnest songs that highlights [...]

With alot of events happening on February 6th. Decided to hit up Cafe Dekcuf. Playing at the venue were: ModernBoys ModernGirls The Allrights Burn Planetarium I had a great time with the indie rock alternative music. The [...]

If you haven't noticed on this site that I've been doing my Best of 2009 list . While compiling my best of "Canadian albums". I felt I shouldn't do a Top 10 since there were alot of great albums released in 2009. Decided to break it down to a top 50 list and in five parts. So here is the first part which I am counting from #41-#51 Fortesses - Octoberman Best tracks on this album [...]

November 18th, I decided to hit up Irene's Pub. It was a start for my week for checking out live music. This being one of three shows this week. Playing at the lovely venue were: The Balconies Modernboys Moderngirls All I can is that maybe the people at Irene's Pub weren't expecting the show to be very loud last night. Since the venue is known for folky rock style of [...]

On October 22nd, went to Zaphods and saw: Sadie Hell Modern Boys Modern Girls Since it was two acts the show started off at around 9pm-ish. There was suppose to be another act but had to pull out due to a family member being sick. Sadie Hell started off and it was just Ben doing a solo set. Interesting set up he had this [...]

Modern Boys Modern Girls released their *sort of* debut album on September 15th. Apparently its a reworking from the same title but different tracking. I wouldn't know because this is my first time listening this album. Members consist of: Akira Alemany Brett Millius Juan Carlos Rivas Seen them live once and I totally had a great time. This album has that retro rocking with that indie alternative garage sound. I noticed that some of the tracks in this album has [...]

(photo: Rob Fournier) Toronto's Modernboys Moderngirls are a curious affair. Their Myspace bio hypothesizes that they are either punk rockers who play soul music or soul musicians who play punk rock; I get that after listening to their debut, I Might As Well Break It . You remember when Marty "Michael J. Fox" McFly picks up an axe and joins the band on stage at the Enchantment Under The Sea dance? He kicks off "Johnny B. Good" and the audience is firmly with him until he really [...]

CD Review: Modernboys Moderngirls - I Might As Well Break It Bands will often rely on certain tactics to get a music lover on his or her feet. One of the most popular methods is to make your head bob with a catchy melody and an infectious hook. Another tried and true technique is to blast you in the face with some high octane rock 'n roll! Oftentimes a band will go with one or the other. Modernboys Moderngirls take the all encompassing route by [...]
This past weekend featured a collection of some of the greatest live music I've seen in a while. Unfortunately, I missed the first day which featured Sadie Hell , Still Life Still , Parlovr , and Converters . Word is that Still Life Still and Parlovr killed it in front of a less than sizable crowd. Friday, featured The Balconies , The Love Machine , Modernboys Moderngirls , and Oh No Forest Fires . As far as energy goes, this was [...]

Modernboys Moderngirls are releasing their first album, I Might as Well Break It on Sept. 15, 2009. Vocalist Akira Alemany states that "the album is meant to never let up, never give you a chance to catch your breath. I wanted to make a record about people and relationships falling apart not brick by brick but all at once." It's got upbeat beats, garagy vocals and rock swagger, just what modern boys need. Modernboys Moderngirls - Miss My Baby Girl (mp3) (buy) [...]
Modernboys Moderngirls (MBMG) are officially releasing their debut album, I Might As Well Break It on September 15. The album was self-produced by singer, songwriter & guitarist Akira Alemany... **Summary** Go to website for downloads, videos & more.

"Taking their name from a moniker given to Japanese youth from the 1920s" Keeping up with the quality debut releases next month, Modernboys Moderngirls are producing the kind of multi-layered music that demands to be played nice n loud, honestly craving some much needed dependencies. Crazy grafted New Wave sedated with some precious funky soul, Christ ! there`s even a wishful ballad pressed in between the lively modern Guitar Pop and 70`s Punk-Funk. `I Might As Well Break It` has been penned with people in mind, human reactions musically brought [...]

This is gonna be a quick one. A few local(ish) bands, and one Ottawa band (that Toronto loves) are playing the Horseshoe on Saturday night. The headliners are Modernboys Moderngirls , a garage-y pop-rock group. I saw them play nearly two years ago when they were a large ensemble. They've trimmed their size and refined their sound since then, and I've heard only good things about their performances. Also on the bill are Everything All the Time , a band that produces chilled-out, groovy dance tracks that are impossible not to move to. Then there's Ottawa's The [...]

Pretty much right up until Friday, I wasn't 100% sure if I was going to head out into the cold to check out the show at Sneaky Dee's. The original thought of seeing Golden Hands ... (look, I'm so lazy I shorten their name even more than most people do) play with a bunch of my favourite semi-locals was too good to pass up. But once they had to cancel, the whole dynamic of the evening turned this into a much less necessary affair for me. Still, as the week wore on I realized that what I was [...]
This is the first update available exclusively through the website; the Yahoo Groups site will continue to exist solely as an archive of the last 5 year's archives. After going through the update, please do poke around the site, and peruse some of the articles; many of them mention weekly recurring shows, and shows yet to appear on the Events Calendar (though that is my next website priority). (The full week in Toronto's performing arts events, after the jump!) IN THEATRE, The Next Stage [...]
Maybe it's because The Killers are releasing a new album soon, but my inbox seems to be flooded of late with powerpop fronted by guys who sing a little better than 1980s Europopstars. I'm only noting this, wondering aloud. I'm not complaining, especially when it comes to Modern Boys, Modern Girls ' debut album, "I Might As Well Break It," which is at the top of the pile in this genre. It's startling how well-produced, crisp, tight and polished the album is, for an indie release and considering that this is the band's first time out [...]

web site :: myspace When it rains it pours I guess. Yesterday, I mentioned that a lot of the sneer and energy of rock and roll has decimated into swirling, folk and chamber pop. Thankfully, young bands like Toronto's Modern Boys Modern Girls are doing their part to crank up the amps and put the brashness back in rock 'n roll. The band's debut record - I Might As Well Break It. - is ten songs that really play like a gig at a dark and dingy club. It leaves [...]
