America’s East Coast hasn’t had the greatest luck with multi-day music festivals. Remember Vineland? All Points West? Sure, upstate New York plays hosts to plenty of jam-band and electronica festivals, and NYC has CMJ and Governors Ball-type events, but none of those are really in the same league as, say, Coachella or Bonnaroo. Companies that try to build the next “destination festival” northeast of the Virginias always seem to struggle, so for Red Frog Events to call Firefly Music Festival “the East Coast’s premiere music experience” even before its Delaware gates opened for the inaugural outing showed either [...]

I'll only say this as an intro: It's about damn time the East Coast had a great music festival. The long journey from parking lot to festival grounds made me feel like I was on a long march to some unknown and exciting place. I felt like a sheep in the herd, and from an aerial view, that's what we would have looked like. The crowd surrounding me was a mix of hippies, bros, patriotic bros, hula hoopers, bros' girlfriends, chubby frat guys, and hipsters. We were heading somewhere. Somewhere not quite real, but not quite imaginary. What [...]

Since their release of 2011's "Celebration, Florida," The Felice Brothers have had a rough go of it. Their home was hit by a hurricane, their tour Winnebago broke down, and their singer/lead guitarist was hospitalized. Yet the Americana band persevered through the adversity to deliver a new collection of songs. Entitled "God Bless You, Amigo," the collection consists of twelve's original songs and eight covers of traditional folk songs. The proceeds from "God Bless You, Amigo," which can be downloaded exclusively from the band's website, will go towards an official follow-up to "Celebration, Florida" and a new touring [...]

Modest Mouse were another late addition to FireFly . I thought that would sell Paz on going to this shindig, but previous engagements fucked that up. They'll be on early-evening Saturday. I bet if the promoters knew that Passion Pit were going to back out, they'd have Modest Mouse going right before The Killers. Now I guess everyone will have to watch Lupe Fiasco after these guys, which just seems insulting. Not that Lupe's terrible but considering these guys are pioneers in the indie rock scene, they should be a co-headliner at FireFly. If they don't play "Beach Side Property" or "Trailer [...]

I often wonder why bands regularly take well over three years to release an album. I’m shocked that it takes musicians several years to make shit like this . But after one listen of Swing Lo Magellan , I immediately understood why it’s taken over three years to follow up the wonderful Bitte Orca , because this is the some of the most elaborate and complex and beautiful music I’ve ever heard. On the other hand, Swing Lo Magellan is [...]

Governors Ball doesn’t really feel like a festival. Maybe it’s the fact that none of the sets overlap, something that has it’s merits and issues, but most likely it’s the fact that for many of us, we go home at the end of the night. There's no camping, no wild late-night partying (of course, they did have some wild after parties at Brooklyn Bowl), there’s your bed at the end of the night. Let me tell you, having your own bed at the end of the night has its merits too. [...]
With a sea of neon shirts, jean shorts, face paint, and Ray Bans, Governors Ball 2012 was all that and a bag of kale chips.

Do you have 45 minutes to spare for MODEST MOUSE and their 1997 beauty The Lonesome Crowded West ? The album has an almost cult following and is my favourite; it’s so raw and energetic, full of youthful exuberance and spunk. Highlight: ‘Cowboy Dan.’ This little documentary just got released online. It’s about the album as well as their career, and is full of the band’s commentary and footage from the time. It’s a pretty rad watch, but it’s also worth devoting your full attention to. Don’t just watch it while [...]

I wasn't at Metallica's Orion Music + More Festival this past weekend, and even if I had been I don't think I would have gone to see Modest Mouse because that particular band just ain't my bag. So I don't know how the audience reacted to their set at the fest. But Metal Insider says [...]
The Orion Music + More Festival took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 23-24. The festival was headlined and curated by Metallica and included performances from bands including Arctic Monkeys, Avenged Sevenfold, Cage The Elephant, Modest Mouse, Volbeat, Baroness, The Gaslight Anthem and more. The Rock it Out! Blog checked out the festival, got really tan, and filmed a bunch of stuff for you guys to check out. Feel free to share this video with anyone who's a fan of Metallica, music festivals, and music overall.
Metal fans are the nicest fans in the world. With a dedicated fan base that loses their shit when someone on stage even utters the name Eddie Trunk, it was almost as if the crowd at the inaugural Orion Music + More Festival were looking forward to an East coast metal festival to blow Mayhem and Warped out of the water. Different generations of fans littered the audience, from the parents who brought their kids to the show to the teens who made a quick stop at Hot Topic to pick up their first Metallica shirt before the [...]

photos by Amanda Hatfield Modest Mouse at Governors Ball - 6/24/12 After playing Orion Fest in Atlantic City on Saturday (6/23), Modest Mouse made their way to Randall's Island on Sunday (6/24) for another NYC-area festival, Governors Ball . As mentioned, Modest Mouse's set at Orion was plagued by a weak sound system and an uninterested crowd, but at Governor's Ball where they fit in better (playing alongside Fiona [...]
