And might I mean that quite literally. Not 'probably functional', it's still all very much up in the air, but it's plausible I might be back in something resembling the land of the living. I think the work which had to be done pretty much immediately has had the effect of jump-starting a spluttering brain. The Josh T. Pearson Toad Session is finished and ready to publish next weekend (assuming he's happy with it), and Ian and I have been plotting this year's Song, by Toad Records er, strategy, if you can call it that (just listen to [...]

Modey Lemon are one of my favorite bands to emerge from the overcrowded scrap heap that produced a bunch of great garage-rock out of Detroit, Pittsburgh and other blue-collar communities - think Cobra Verde , The White Stripes , Whirlwind Heat , The Sights - and a lot of not-so-great garage-rock - think The Black Keys . "You Bug Me" is a formative 7-inch for the group, blasted to [...]

This Valentine's weekend, show a little love for the hometown as two great local acts will be performing in the 'Burgh. First up on Friday, the Modey Lemon will be bringing home their dirty blues-rock with a show at Brillobox in Lawrenceville. A one-time staple on the local scene, this is the band's first hometown show in almost a year. Here's a POP City video piece of the band talking about the generic "garage rock" label that's been applied to them and their feelings on staying true to their Pittsburgh roots: Then, [...]

In an awesome super cool, damn you wish you were me, Friday night; I decided to dig through the ol' record crates and come up with some albums that were criminally overlooked, or have been lost to history and should probably be rediscovered. Here is the list: Modey Lemon - Season of Sweets : prior to the release of this record, the ban d released the "Birth [...]

The second of two shows I was able to check out in London back in September ( check photos from the first show ) was the great Pittsburgh band, The Modey Lemon . If you have never seen them live, you must do it and get your ass rocked off.

I have an update written which I just need to brush up on for all the stuff that I've done. In the meantime, listen to the following songs to keep you company: POP: The Pale Corners - Steve Buscemi ("dreamy [chorus], [strings] and trumpets as sweet as candy") Good Night, States (grandaddy meets ben folds) - Only Thing Mariage Blanc (we infuse Elliott Smith with Beulah) - Famous Last Words The Midwest Beat (how could you not [...]

Aye aye sailors, welcome to the Friday Gig Guide, a quick round-up of what you could be doing if you were cool enough to be in London and wealthy enough to drop everything and score tickets to some gigs. I shall be at home watching Big Bro and eating potato salad as firstly I have flu (poor me) and secondly I have massive studenty type finance situations. Bring on that next loan installment! Koko has Scottish lads Sergeant supported by the lovely and equally Scottish Attic Lights [...]

First of all it is criminal why Modey Lemon aren't huge! Their punk infused drug fuelled garage rock should be pumping through all our ears. But rather than just thrashing it out three chord style, throwing in a lick here and there, this band take a much more considered approach. Yes they play loud, and their tunes fucking rock big time, but they are far more adventurous than your average "garage" band. I saw them back on the "Thunder and Lightning" tour. They were loud. No bass player in the traditional sense, [...]

One of the best undernoticed singles of last year was "Paris" by UK dance-rock act Friendly Fires . It's one of these young love, "us against the world" romantic epics but the arrangement and production is just perfect, big and sprawling with waves of big synths washing over the syncopated percussion. It's fantastic. MP3 : Friendly Fires - Paris The band released two EPs last year in addition to that single, one of which, "Photobooth," is pretty good too: [...]

I'd like to take this moment to talk about shredding and bands who shred. Shredding, for those who don't know, is the art of tearing sh*t up with a guitar. It was popularized earlier this decade by a Finnish Youtube artist by the name of St Sanders who produced a series of ironic overdubs of guitar gods not shredding. Although his account was suspended by the fun police, his work lives on (search shreds on Youtube and you can still find much of his original work). Now while these videos provide great examples of what shredding isn't, I'll [...]
Evil Urges! You've got some tough choices to make from in this week's list of releases, containing a ton of new albums both new and old. Amid the lengthy list from Largehearted Boy, you'll find a bevy of reissues and repackaged collections from the likes of The Beach Boys, Husker Du, Wooden Shjips, Johnny Cash, Dinosaur Jr., Rob Dickinson (of Catherine Wheel) and a whole lot more. Among the new releases are the latest from Styrofoam, Twilight Sad, Solomon Burke, Flying Lotus, plus all of the great selections [...]
![[SXSW - One Helluva Recap : Day One]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/961206_lg.jpg)
SXSW One Helluva Recap: Day One March is definitely one month I always look forward to, and I contribute that entirely to SXSWeek - Austin's favorite time to show some love to film, music and technology. Buried into that schedule are five days dedicated to music, and it is in those five days that I really live. I apologize ahead for somewhat quickened recaps but there's just too much to really get into individual sets of all those days. So let's get to it - day one! [...]
