Sunday night, Mojave 3 at North Star! Seriously people, this is Christmas in October. Sure, it's a little disappointing that Rachel Goswell won't be on stage this time around, but there's still no reason to let anything come between you and the band that put out the album that sounds like everything The Life Pursuit should've been but, let's be honest, wasn't, AND also has a back catalogue that's absent even one single clunker, AND who used to be Slowdive, for cryin' out loud. You read it here first: Philly concert event of the month.

Woolly Leaves / Quiet Waters ( Outside ) Baby Eagle / Baby Eagle ( Outside ) In the past month there've been not one but two releases from solo Constantines, but anyone hoping for an extra dose of their sweaty rock will have to wait for the band's next proper release - the two projects from keyboardist Will Kidman and guitarist Steve Lambke are both gentle and [...]

So to anyone who was curious what the answers were in my now-closed Mojave 3 contest (congrats to winners Chris, Dimitri and Paul by the by), Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell's first band - preceding Slowdive and Mojave 3 - was called The Pumpkin Fairies and was formed when they were the tender ages of 18 and 17, respectively. There's an excellent writeup about the duo's formative years here as well as a couple of MP3s from their original demo cassette tape which I've posted below. Also below [...]
This is a taste of a feature that will accompany the new blog format. It will help you preview artists coming to WI and plan your show calendar accordingly. October 5: The Damnwells - Sell The Lie October 6: Okkervil River - The President's Dead October 7: Leslie Hall - Gold Pants October 8: Tilly [...]
Got the oppurtunity to speak with Neil Halstead from Mojave 3 over the telephone (Skype) last week about their upcoming tour of the U.S. and their brilliant album "Puzzles Like You." I must say that their new record is simply awesome. As much as I enjoyed the album on the first few listens, I love [...]

Ben Folds So, it's been a long week. I think this is the first time I've slept in past 10 since about July, so that's been the highlight of my day so far. I'm working on my top albums of 2006 list already just so I can get an idea of what's goin' down. Just so you guys know, the best-of lists at the end of the year are going to be, for the lack of the better word, epic. Completely unbiased and everything. Which probably means you'll disagree [...]
Mojave 3 will be embarking on a full tour of the U.S. & Canada starting at the end of September and even making a stop in Japan to play at Mt. Fuji. The tour is in support of their brilliant new album Puzzles Like You. Their new album is bit more uptempo and "poppy" than [...]

It's official. The creme stand in Montpelier is closing for the season. Sunday is the last day. For me, that signals the end of the summer. Going down there after dinner with the kids is a fun trip during the summer. I know we can always go Ben & Jerry's in town but it isn't the same. The creme stand has that old time throwback feel to it and since it's so popular, you always run into somebody you know. That never happens at Ben & Jerry's for [...]

Nowadays, we are blasted with TV commercials (that's if you watch TV) and it seems that sometimes there are more commercials than acutal shows. However, it is intriguing to me to see the creativity on some of these commercials and also the music that is played. Well known songs are the main picks but there is an increasing number of commercials that take songs from "indie" artists. For instance, the below track "Japanese Girls" by Robbers On High Street is one I guarantee not many people are aware of who the band is and have no idea who they are [...]

I will preface this by saying (admitting) I was not expecting this album from Mojave 3 . That being said, I am very much into it. Trading in their slow-country-ish past for an upbeat and happy-go-lucky sound, the band's reinvention is aiding me in riding out the end of this hot West coast summer. While unexpected, Puzzles Like You is a real treat. I had fallen off the Mojave 3 wagon several years ago, and while still a fan, was not over-eager to listen to the old softly strummed and whispered [...]

I'm about to head to Indy to catch "Little Miss Sunshine", and I just can't wait. Really, the tension is breaking me inside. I think this is the first kinda-sorta indie film Steve Carrell has done in a while. Good thing, or bad thing? We'll find out, that's for sure. So before I leave, I guess I'll leave you some songs : Big Star Baby (Demo) - Mojave 3 You Have To Be Joking (Autopsy Of The Devil's [...]

Ok, everyone seems to be on a list for best-ofs during the first half of 2006. I did a blogger guest post awhile back listing their favorite track of the first half and you can still check that here (tracks are still up but not for long). This is my list of the 10 I liked best for the first half of 2006 and just three words describing why I like each one. 1. Arab Strap - The Last Romance [...]

Seven of the best tracks on deck, right now. Some older, some newer. Indie pop/rock gems that will fill your music heart with more glee than is possible to handle. Rock on soldiers of the indie music army. 1. Religious zealots of the Church are definitely what these guys are. After a few listens you will be kneeling at the altar and praising Steve Kilbey for influencing this Louisville, Kentucky band. You won't be sorry at all for listening to this track. Super! Follow The Train A Breath [...]
