Us older folks remember the crazy antics of Mojo Nixon from the early days of MTV when they used to play music videos. I discovered Mojo before he started showing up on MTV and loved his stuff. Basic rock with Mojo's guitar and Skid's washboard Percussion. Highlights from this album include Stuffin Martha's Muffin (about VJ Martha Quinn), Jesus at McDonald's, a cover of Alice Cooper's Be My Lover. This is out of print and if you manage to find a copy, prices start from $60 and go up from there. It's a sloppy, drunken mess, and I mean that [...]

Readin' the paper the other day, I came across some of the best news I've seen there in quite a while. Kinky Friedman is planning to run for governor again, it said, and he is going to begin campaigning soon for the 2010 gubernatorial election. Well. Even though his last governor's race wasn't nearly as entertaining as I thought it would be, it still had its moments. One of the best: Kinky's campaign slogan "Why The Hell Not?" You can see some of those in the new documentary film, Along Came Kinky , which chronicles his 2006 [...]

With Christmas rapidly approaching (only a few more shopping days) I thought it was time to do my annual list of favorite Christmas songs. Why not put these on your turkey-eating playlist: 10. "It's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"- U2 9. "Frosty The Snowman"- Reverend Horton Heat 8. "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch"- Mojo Nixon 7. "Leroy The Redneck Reindeer"- Joe Diffie 6. "Christmas In [...]
Every year, the decrepit tone-deaf wankers in charge of the Rock and Roll (so-called) Hall of Fame make like assholes and crap diarrhea rivulets all over the history of the art they profess to honor, overlooking the seminal performers whose efforts changed civilization while praising inconsequential one-hit wonders, doo-wop dinosaurs and happy-face dorks. For that homercat gives you this classic Runaways one finger salute. It's that time of year again. Yes, my yearly rant. I Have to rant yearly around this time because of the insanely retarded voting committee who decides the nominees for [...]
Because... It's Talk Like A Pirate Day. And since we're the epitome of everything a pirate should be, who better to give proper lessons on how to talk like a pirate than us? So you ready? Pen? Notepad? Eye patch? Girl on the plank? Good. Let's get started. Repeat after me: My name is [ insert name ]. I am [ insert age ] years old. I have two dogs, three cats and a gerbil. I like peaches. Good. Yeah, I know it's tough to talk [...]

When Mojo Nixon and his partner in silliness, Skip Roper, released Bo-Day-Shus!!! in 1987, it opened a Pandora's Box of attention for the charismatic funnyman. The song "Elvis Is Everywhere" found itself on television and radio programs all over the United States. As did its author, who became a part-time VJ on MTV on the heels of its success. "Elvis Is Everywhere plays out as you'd expect: Nixon rants about how Elvis constructed the Great Pyramids of Giza and claims that he can see the King in everyone around him, while Roper backs him up with a pre-Beatles [...]

When it comes down to it, it's true - Elvis IS Everywhere. Had a chance to hear Mojo Nixon hosting his radio show on Sirius Outlaw Country, and he played this tune of his from 20 years ago. So don't get mad at Mojo when he calls Michael J. Fox the "Anti-Elvis" - it was 1988. It was Family Ties and Back to the Future era. Was Alex Keaton the Anti-Elvis? Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper - Elvis [...]
So I'm back - it's been a while, and I'm sorry that I left y'all hanging. But I return with this collection of name-check goodness. "A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Lyndon Johnson'd Into Submission)" - Paul Simon (from The Paul Simon Song Book ) One of Simon's most overtly Dylan-inspired numbers, "A Simple Desultory Philippic" was first seen here, on Simon's UK-only solo album from 1965. In this song, he sums up the life of a traveling singer-songwriter who has seen [...]

I've got a great friend who in neck-deep in law books, studying for the bar . I have decided to throw together a few songs about studying and lawyers. Ani DiFranco ~ Studying Stones Boat ~ The Bar Is Too Low To Fail Geoff Berner ~ My Dad's A Lawyer Mojo Nixon ~ Destroy All Lawyers Oxford Collapse ~ Lady Lawyers Paul Edelman [...]

Today in Music History: In 1970 Janis Joplin is found dead in her room at the Landmark Hotel in Hollywood, California. The official cause is accidental heroin overdose. Here we go again, another year and another case of sounding like a broken record. The nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 are likely to cause Howls of displeasure from most classic rock fans. Homercat for one is wailing like a banshee. Three of the latest nominees (John Mellencamp, Dave [...]

(from Date With Debbi #16, July-August 1971) Tempermental teen queen Debbi Anderson busts a groove and scores a smash hit record...on some fool's head. The Weirdos - Destroy All Music (from a 1977 single; collected on We Got the Neutron Bomb: Weird World, Vol. 2 , 2003) - But fellas, music has proven itself more than capable of destroying itself... Speaking of which, I read an article today in a local weekly that tried to present Mandy Moore's new album as minor [...]

Today in Music History: In 1975, Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple to form his own group Rainbow. The first day of summer eh? Couldn't tell it around here. The island has been positively chilly this year. Yet homercat keeps getting busier and busier which is a sure sign of summer. Thus not a whole lot of extra time for any in depth musical essays. Instead I thought it would be a good day for some fun music. Just no [...]
