Slow Down, Molasses are from Saskatoon, which is apparently a thriving town, but to my mind is for some reason just marginally more glamorous than Cumbernauld, but I am open to being corrected by anyone who actually knows. We're putting them on at Henry's in Edinburgh next week, so I really shouldn't have come to see them here as well, but umm... well, I didn't have any better plans before my label panel and I happened to meet Tyson from the band the night before in London as well, so why the fuck not. Anyway, they [...]

Slow Down, Molasses are a sprawling indie rock collective from Saskatoon, SK right in the heart of the Canadian prairies. The band brings together a cast of 6 (and sometimes more…) members to create their own unique wall-of-sound. Songs that began as sparse, dust-covered arrangements have developed into full-fledged, lush indie-folk anthems filled with strings, horns and layers of feedback drenched guitars and sweet vocal harmonies. The band's second album, 'Walk Into The Sea' (the first being 'I'm An Old Believer' ), features guest appearances by [...]

This is something of a watershed moment for me. My library of musical morsels is very particular. I love the classic LP immeasurably, to the point where, of the hundreds of albums I own, only one of those is a "Best of..." ( Four Thousand Seven Hundred And Sixty-Six Seconds by Teenage Fanclub, if you're asking, an album I urge everyone to go and buy). I would never have thought of possessing a "remix" album, but life is all about variety and expanding one's horizons, so I though what better opportunity to branch the musical gap between crippling anal [...]

We join Canadian 7 piece folk band Slow Down, Molasses on their first UK tour, 'Tour into the Sea'. Their short 5-leg UK tour, documented in this tour diary, included performances at the revered festival End of The Road, The Northampton Labour Club, The Brixton Windmill, The Oxford Port Mahon and Ten Feet Tale in Cardiff. Tuesday, August 30th After red eye flights from Saskatoon, Calgary, and Toronto; Patrick, Chris and I meet up at the designated spot in Oxford, UK [...]

We have been meaning to post about Slow Down, Molasses for a while now, and especially so since catching their set at The End of the Road Festival earlier this month. They describe themselves as a Canadian alt/drone/folk rock band and it is as good a place to start as any. New album Walk Into The Sea was released here in the UK earlier this month and it is one of those records that seems on first listen to be the perfect musical definition of sprawling as it moves from melody to feedback, from [...]

Molasses by nature is extremely slow moving but super sticky and sweet, though not something you would want to ingest on its own as the thick syrup is best used for your aunt's cake recipe. That, in a nutshell, describes Walk into the Sea , the second full-length release from Slow Down, Molasses . If their name is any indication, the collective based in the Canadian prairie city of Saskatoon are not afraid to slow things down at times preferring the accompaniment of meandering, unhurried horns over their electric guitars. Their story telling is a direct [...]

Photographer Tim Ferguson went down to the Brixton Windmill to cover Slow Down, Molasses on their last night of their mini-UK tour - fresh and invigorated from performing at The End of The Road festival . Support came in the impeccable form of Mat Gibson . [...]

Somerville's Hot Molasses are an indie rock dance band. They have frequent male/female duet vocals that can alternately remind you of the B-52's and The Vaselines. They also describe themselves accurately as jangly and bouncy. Their most recent EP, Frankly , starts out hot with a raucous dance track that features an unlikely combination of crunchy guitar and poppy, campy synth, and vocals that are heavy on the B-52's influence (in the best sort of way). The EP then eases off for another four songs of straight indie rock that are less [...]

Now that North by Northeast 2011 is over, it's time to reflect over the good, the bad and the sweaty. Here's a recap of what I experienced over those four days. Wednesday I quickly figured out this time around (I've been attending NXNE three or four years now) that even if you make a schedule with who you plan on seeing, it can change for factors other than the music. I was originally going to see Pat Jordache – an experimental guy from Montreal whose album I've been digging lately – but I ran into [...]
I'm sure we have all had the experience of discovering a band at a live show, excitedly heading over to the merch table to buy their newest release, and heading home to listen to the record only to be sorely disappointed that the strengths of that live show wasn't present on the physical disc. Well that definitely wasn't my experience with the...

Frank Yang One crucial way that NXNE has become more like its bigger, cooler acronym-a-like cousin SXSW is the increase of day shows to go along with the official evening showcases. Of course, I didn't actually go to any of these new daytime events - the only afternoon party I hit up was one that had been happening for the last few years, the Kelp Records BBQ at the Global Village hostel, this year co-presented by the Brits at The Line Of Best Fit . After all - they [...]

by teepoo Finally! I met the first band to ever quote me in their press releases. They didn't have their strings or horns with them for the BBQ, but I was highly impressed that they brought the typewriter for Bodies . It's an essential part of the track and watching it done live was just so entertaining! Me and the dudes at Tympanogram ended up buying the vinyl because we were won over by the typewriter. I didn't even mind that I would have to [...]

So, here's the deal. A few days ago I was informed that my squad will be leaving the relief effort on the 22nd (This upcoming Wednesday). This is good for you because: A) The Indie Sabbath will be back in full force sooner than planned, bringing you that same material that has been described as "Cooler than a polar bear's toe nail" and "So fresh it'll turn your chest into a pair of class cutters." B) [There is no B. Actually there are practically no Bees anymore either . [...]

by teepoo Late Night Radio is the second single off Slow Down, Molasses album Walk Into the Sea . Its an upbeat, heart pumping track with uplifting horns that remind you everything is going to be okay. Despite the song being called Late Night Radio , it's a great track to start off the day with.
