Album Previews Great news from Secretly Canadian found its way into my inbox the other day. Jason Molina of Magnolia Electric Co. and Songs:Ohia fame, and Will Johnson, principle songwriter for Centro-matic and South San Gabriel, combined forces and recorded an album in Texas earlier this year. The album is slated for release on November 3 in the states and November 2 in the UK on the aforementioned Secretly Canadian label. The first single, which you can listen to below, is entitled "Twenty Cycles To The Ground." Sounds [...]

There you go. Here's some nice words from your friendly label, Secretly Canadian. Molina and [...]

Any bit of writing that is penned to promote a new album is always prone to a bit of hyperbole, but today I read this: "... Running together for one dark blissout of a night, two of the finest indie-folk songwriters of the last decade come together under the Texas sky to quietly lay to tape 14 crushing, haunting tunes, leaving space enough in each to match their surroundings ." I like each and every one of those things - Quiet blissful nights. Crushing, haunting music with lots of space to echo and ache. [...]

Lucy Hamblin Ridiculous webhosting issues persist, so this one will be kept reasonably brief - who knows how long this window of opportunity of my site being up will remain. I've actually been told that the issues that've plagued the site for the past week or so have been resolved and am hoping that's the case, but if'n you find that things are unbearably slow or down altogether, swing by my Twitter for all sorts of colourful cursing. While downloadable/streamable/watcha ble online sessions are becoming much more commonplace, MySpace Transmissions is setting [...]
We've been waiting on this one for a while--pretty much a year and a half now, actually--so pardon us if we geek out here for a moment. But, this week, we finally heard some official news on the... Continue reading "Bonus MP3: Molina and Johnson -- "Twenty Cycles To The Ground"" >

Molina and Johnson should open for Monsters of Folk. This collaboration of indie-folk masterminds will undoubtedly be a great album of melancholy music. Johnson approached Molina at the merch table after a show in Austin and they exchanged numbers. A few months later, they were recording together. Will Johnson states: For ten days we wrote, co-wrote, workshopped, complimented, scrutinized, drank, invited friends to come play music, smoked, made lots of notes and drawings, drank a little more and shot the BB gun off the back porch when we just needed some time and space. [...]

Think of this as a new model version of the Stills-Young Band. Indie-folk singers Jason Molina and Will Johnson have combined their talents to create a new joint album together, Molina and Johnson. The album is due out Nov. 3, after which the pair will embark on a European tour. Molina is the driving force behind the Magnolia Electric Co., while Johnson fronts Centro-matic and recently hooked up with the Monsters of Folk supergroup. Their album is slated to include 14 tunes and will come out on Secretly Canadian Records. [...]

Molina & Johnson , new album from Jason Molina of Magnolia Electric Co./Songs: Ohia and Will Johnson of Centro-Matic/South San Gabriel, will be released November 3rd through Bloomington, IN-based label Secretly Canadian . Both Jason Molina and Centro-matic's Will Johnson have had a bloggable 2009 -- Molina turning out some lovely tracks and playing pool parties with Magnolia Electric Co., Johnson turning up on drums for Monsters Of Folk -- but before it's over they'll have one more project to promote with the Molina & Johnson LP, under the name Molina & Johnson, starring Molina & Johnson. The pair met at a Magnolia show in 2007, made a record in Texas in 2008, and are putting it out now. Their collaborative [...]

Jason Molina and Will Johnson's self-titled record is due out on the 3rd of November, and at last I have something concrete from it. '20 Circles' is available for download via Secretly Canadian, and you can grab it below. Enjoy! Download: Jason Molina & Will Johnson - 'Twenty Circles to the Ground'
Molina & Johnson Molina & Johnson (Secretly Canadian) Releasing: 3 November The first leaked track from Molina & Johnson, the new collaboration between the honchos behind Magnolia Electric Co. and Centro-matic, respectively, is called "Twenty Circles to the Ground". It sounds a bit more Johnson than Molina, though it has the same soft, persistent toms that have been backing Molina since Songs: Ohia. If you live in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, or Spain, you'll be able to see the pair perform live for the first time in November and December. 01 Twenty Circles to the Ground 02 All Falls Together...

One of my most anticipated new releases of the Fall, before I ever even heard a note, was the collaboration between Magnolia Electric Co.'s Jason Molina and Centro-Matic's Will Johnson. Regular readers of PHW are well aware of my affection for the music of both men - you may recall Centro-Matic's Dual Hawks popping up on my Favorite Albums of 2008 list or my review of MEC's recent Josephine from this past summer (not to mention " Jason Molina Week [...]
